ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL RESEARCHES CENTER INTRODUCTION Human being is a creature that has capability of acquiring knowledge. The main attribute of a human being that makes him superior to all other creatures is his ability to attain knowledge and apply this knowledge to provide solutions to encountered problems. Throughout the history of mankind, human knowledge has been the fundamental driving force behind all changes and developments. Just as how knowledge empowers a person and makes him superior, it empowers nations and provides superiority in the international economic and political arena. From second half of the 20th century, mankind entered a new age called Information Age. Individuals and nations who have the knowledge and who could utilize the knowledge will have more chance of developing and progressing. Societies that are aware of the value of knowledge have established and developed institutions and establishments that produce knowledge and apply this knowledge to real life. Today, one of the indicators for development level of societies is the number of research and development institutions that they have and the amount of resources allocated to these institutions. Economic and Social Researches Center (ESAM) is an institution established by a group of scientists, politicians and businessmen in 1969 to produce knowledge and to provide national solutions based on this knowledge to be presented to the government leaders. I- ESTABLISMENT OF ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL RESEARCHES CENTER (ESAM) Economic and Social Researches Center (ESAM) is a research center established in 1969 by a group of technocrats, scientists, politicians and businessmen who have the conviction that problems of our country can only be solved by the consideration of our national values and our people s mutual opinion and understanding. As one of the first idea and strategy centers established in Turkey ESAM has carried out many research that contributed to our nation s economical and social development. It has developed strategies and produced national solutions to national problems. Over the years, among the members of this center there have been two presidents, four prime ministers, many ministers and politicians. A great number of high level bureaucrats, who took important roles in decision making process in Turkey over the last 40 years, have made great contributions to our country s development through ESAM.

ESAM made a study in 1970 s, assessing Turkey s relation with then European Common Market, and developed strategies to build organized industrial centers, and made a step forward to start heavy industry in Turkey. In 1980 s, ESAM kept working on Just Order as a reconstruction model. Present world order which has been established and controlled by the racist and monopolist imperialism has driven the whole humanity into numerous economic and social problems. With this reality in mind, ESAM has been organizing meetings and making studies since the beginning of 1990 s in order to establish a New World Order based on justice that will replace the present power centered world order. In this context, ESAM took an active role in the initiation of the D-8 organization. After completing its development stage, D-8 is hopefully going to be a global movement. At global scale this New Just World Order is a theoretical proposal primarily to countries like China, India, Russia, Brazil, and Mexico which have been socially economically colonized and exploited by the rich and powerful countries, to gather and unite under its structure. Establishment and activities of ESAM have been greatly encouraged and supported by Milli Görüþ leader Prof. Dr. Necmettin Erbakan, 54 th Prime Minister of Turkey. II- THE OBJECTIVES OF ESAM The objectives of ESAM, founded as an association, are listed in the 3rd clause of its administrative regulations. It states that: The objectives of ESAM are, by carrying out social and economic research, present scientific truth for the benefit of the society, find solutions for the social problems, develop strategies, and contribute to our county s physical and moral development. ESAM activities have been in line with these objectives listed above since III- WORKING AREAS OF ESAM The working areas of ESAM are listed in the 4th clause of its regulation as follows: Conduct research projects related to the working areas. Therefore universities, academia, civil society groups, political parties, business circles, government institutions and associations, and all those concerned are to be informed. In order to achieve the objectives, organize national and international conferences, panel discussions, symposiums, competitions, commemorations, multi-purpose indoor meetings, seminars, talks, open air meetings, book signing days, critical meetings on published books, knowledge sharing meetings, lunch/dinner meetings, concerts and trips.

ESAM has contributed to the development of our country, to the solutions of the problems the Islamic world is facing, and to the establishment of foundations of the D-8 organization, by working in the areas listed above.

IV- VISION OF ESAM ESAM has been working in accordance with the following principles: - One should believe as he thinks, should think as he believes; should talk as he thinks, and should live as he talks. Virtuous person is a person whose belief, thought, talk, and act do not contradict with each other. Virtuous person can be productive, successful, and effective in using his abilities. He can be beneficial to himself, his society, the environment and the whole mankind. - Every nation should be governed according to their world vision and values. The problems faced by a society should be addressed based on their common vision and values. Knowledge is universal. Knowledge based solutions can be permanent to the extent of their compatibility with the national values. Solutions that are not compatible with a nation s natural, cultural and social structure can not be sustained. - ESAM believes that our country s problems should be addressed according to the mutual world vision and values of our own people. ESAM defends the fact that our country s problems cannot be solved by other nations world vision, social, economic and cultural structures that are not compatible with our own values. - ESAM believes that the sole aim of social activities is to work for mankind because the mankind is the most superior among all creatures. Physical and spiritual needs of mankind should be fulfilled in justice. - ESAM believes that social development has two dimensions: development and wisdom. Development refers to physical development. Its goal is to serve the people by industrialization and development. Wisdom refers to human development. Wisdom educates the people not to violate other people s rights, and teaches them to be conscious to defend his/her own rights against violations. According to this approach, an educated person does not act unjustly to other people and does not consent to any injustices made to his/her self. - ESAM emphasizes that human rights and freedom should be protected for the continuity of peace and co-operation in social life. Any institution or association that limits or abolishes human rights and freedom, in a way, loses its right for existence. - ESAM as an institution that adopted these principles aims to establish peace and justice in Turkey, Islamic world and all over the world by cooperating with every individual and association that has the same principles. V- INTELLECTUAL, EDUCATIONAL, CULTURAL, POLITICAL, ECONOMICAL WORK OF ESAM ESAM works in the areas as listed below that are in line with its objectives.

A. Scientific Works ESAM has been following the developments in Europe since its establishment in When today s European Union was being structured as European Common Market, ESAM carried out detailed studies and published reports covering all aspects of it. ESAM organizes meetings with intellectuals and scientists, and provides environment for brainstorming sessions with scientists, politicians, bureaucrats, and businessmen on our country s problems. ESAM organized International Milli Gorus Symposium in October delegations from 21 different countries and 147 delegations from Turkey attended this symposium at Dedeman Hotel in Istanbul. Delegations including ex-presidents, ex-prime ministers, ministers and members of the parliment, scientists, businessmen and journalists from the Muslim World found the opportunity to express their views and ideas. ESAM publishes The Journal of Economic and Social Research in collaboration with our scientists. ESAM takes special interest in the issues faced by our people living in Europe. In this regard, studies have been made and various meetings have been organized with the attendance of representatives of Muslims living in Western European Countries. ESAM arranges conferences by inviting distinguished scientists on subjects regarding the humanity and the world, and provides platforms to discuss these subjects. Hundreds of conferences, panels, panel discussions, and symposiums have been organized by inviting experts from different parts of the society in the last three years. ESAM organizes conferences on economic, political, social issues of Turkey as well as on developments that leads moral degradation of the country and threats against national unity of Turkey. Our people and politic parties are informed about these issues. ESAM organizes scientific meetings by inviting nationally or internationally wellknown scientists, politicians and thinkers to discuss the problems that are faced in our country, in the region and in the world. As part of Muslim Communities Union series meetings, the 18 th congress was held on May 28-30, 2009 in Istanbul. The representatives of Muslim Societies attended the congress to discuss Muslims and nations problems at the international level. B- Educational and Cultural Works

ESAM organizes seminars and workshops for development our youth in research, writing, and scientific analysis. ESAM has produced projects and strategies which have already proved to be beneficial to our country s educational and cultural development since Suggestions and recommendations have been made to improve the educational and cultural relationships between Turkey and other countries in the Balkans, Middle East, Caucasians, Middle Asia, and Islamic countries. Educational and cultural activities are encouraged for the development of the D-8 project which defends rights and justice against political suppression, exploitation, racism and monopolist regimes. C- Works in Political Area Since the beginning of 1970s, ESAM has worked on bringing up our nation s common values and world vision to the political arena as Milli Görüþ, and introduced this new vision to world s political literature ESAM emphasized that the main function of political institutions in all aspects of life is to establish justice for sharing of benefaction and expenses. Activities making people conscious of rights and justice were supported. Just Order Project is a social structuring model based on our nation s mutual world vision and values. It was brought into the political arena at the end of 1980 s. ESAM has kept working to develop establishment of New World based on justice and rights. D- Works in Economical Area ESAM has made great contributions to our country s development and industrialization policies. These are underlined below. - Develop National Industrialization Strategy - Heavy industry and high technology projects were supported in the 1970 s in Turkey. - Conduct studies for development of ideas for establisment of small scale and organized industrial areas that would accelerate industrialization and development. - Investigate projects that would assist local investments by government subsidies. - Lead the idea of spreading industrialization countrywide in Anatolia.

E- Works in International Area ESAM believes that the world system established by victorious countries after World War II cannot solve the problems of all nations. Reckoning of power as a right by this system has caused vandalism, violence, unjust sharing of natural resources, and increas in injustices. ESAM has stood up for the establishment of A New World System based on rights and justice since the beginning of 1980 s. Many scientific meetings have been organized for this cause. ESAM is proud of its theoretical and intellectual contributions for the establisment of the D-8 Organization as a global integration project. D-8 was established on June 15, 1997 at the time of the 54 th government of Turkey. ESAM organizes annual meetings commorating the establisment anniversary of the D-8 by inviting representatives and founders of the D-8. ESAM sets its ultimate target to build A New World that would gather the countries of D-60 and finally D-160 around the D-8 core. Additionally, ESAM has been hosting Muslim Communities Union in Istanbul since 1992, and has been putting effort to spread help and solidarity in economic, cultural, and scientific areas among Islamic countries. VI- BRANCHES AND REPRESENTATIVES ESAM is headquartered in Ankara. There are active branches in Istanbul, Konya, Samsun, Trabzon, Kocaeli, Elazýð, Antalya, and Diyarbakýr.
