7 movement. He lit a fire, a revival, which swept across the colonies. It was a personal expression of faith. It distanced them from the Anglican Church in England. He preached independence. 3. Tell about George Whitefield s life. Why was he beloved by so many? A. He was born at the Bell Inn, Gloucester, England, in He grew up there with a love of acting/theater. He liked to act out Bible stories in his sermons. He started reading the Bible at 15 after he dropped out of school and was ordained at a young age. He preached at St. Mary s of the Crypt and traveled to America seven times. He could really connect with his audience. He preached over 18,000 sermons to the colonists and sparked a spiritual revival. Thousands attended his funeral because they loved him so much. 4. What symbols are on the Old State House in Boston? What would they remind the colonists of, and what do they remind us of? A. The two symbols are the lion and the unicorn. They represent the royal coat of arms. It was to remind us of the royalty and supremacy of the king of England. Today we no longer have a king since we separated from England and won our independence. 5. The USS Constitution is on the Freedom Trail. Tell what you learned about it, including its nickname and some of its history. A. It was launched in 1797 by order of George Washington. It has a wooden hull and three masts. It was built in Boston and is the oldest commissioned warship still afloat. It had 56 guns and was nicknamed Old Ironsides. 6. Boston Common is the first stop on the Freedom Trail. How has it been used in history? A. It is 50 acres of land that was founded in It is the oldest public park in America. It was used to graze cattle and other animals as well as for public gatherings (like executions). The British camped there before the start of the American Revolution. It is now a park. 7.
