1 Anti-Bullying Week Special Edition! This week in every class our children have been talking about bullying what it is, how to recognize it and most importantly how to STOP it. We use the acronym STOP to identify bullying; it is something unkind or hurtful that is done to a victim SEVERAL TIMES ON PURPOSE. We also use STOP to put a halt to bulling; the most effective way to stop bullying is to START TELLING OTHER PEOPLE. This special edition of our newsletter is to tell you some of the activities the children have been doing this week. Rip Rip by Maple Class Miss Thaw read a story to the class about a girl who was bullied. Each time a different kind of bullying was mentioned in the story the children had to rip their piece of paper. The class then discussed who might have helped the girl and they tried to put their piece of paper back together, only to discover that the paper was never quite the same. This led to a discussion on the longer-term impact of bullying.

2 Writing about bullying... Here we have some collaborative writing by Maple, Cedar and Willow Classes. These classes performed their work in our assembly. Maple Class worked in groups and each wrote a verse. Their poem explores bullying from the victim's point of view. Willow Class each made a hand and wrote a bullying statement on the back. If you look you can see it is an acrostic piece which means that the first letter of each line spells out a message. Cedar Class wrote the poem on page 4 which explores what a bully is using metaphors. The Victim by Maple Class I hear whispering, I m all alone. They glare at me, I m all alone, They walk away, I m all alone, Crying, crying in the corner. They text me once, I don t dare read them. They MSN me a lot, I don t dare read them. They me loads, I don t dare read them. Petrified, Petrified in my own home. They call me names, I look at the floor. They hurt my feelings, I look at the floor. My heart caves in, I look at the floor, Tears, tears become waterfalls. I get bullied, I tell my friends, They say they will help, I tell my friends, I feel much better now, I tell my friends, Free, free finally. People call me names about my skin. Sometimes life s not right. I get picked on about my accent. Sometimes life s not right. It s not my fault my family dress differently. Sometimes life s not right. I ve done nothing, nothing to them. They re clenching their fists, I bow my head. They punch me hard, I bow my head. They whip me with a skipping rope, I bow my head. Crying, crying in the corner I told my Mum, I am relieved. I told my Dad, I am relieved. They have stopped now, I am relieved. Happy, Happy at last I go to see my teacher, I m less scared now, I tell her about the bullies, I m less scared now. She says she will deal with it, I m less scared now. Safe, safe at last. Page 2 Anti-Bullying Week

3 Acrostic Bullying Statements by Willow Class Stop bullying and listen to me and then we can sort it out. Tell other people. Own up if you have been bad. Please think carefully about what you say. Be nice at Gotham Primary School. Understand that Bullying is mean and that it shall have to stop. Look out on the playground for people that need your help. Learn to be kind. You need to stop bullying because it is naughty. If you wont behave you have to miss playtime. Naughty people do not get many toys for Christmas. Good schools make life good. A friend can be big or small. No bulling or this school will be sad. Don t argue! We need to stop people being nasty. Each person deserves to be happy all the time. Can you be kind to me please? At this school we do not like bullying so you need to stop. No bullying at Gotham Primary School! A good person will help others to be good. Listen when you are told not to bully. Learn to stop bulling by telling a teacher. Bulling can stop if people are really kind. Everyone deserves kindness. Help each other then we can be friends. A bad person needs to be good. People need to understand that bullying is several times on purpose. People who bully need to have 5 minutes in goal. You should be nice at school. Gotham Primary Newsletter Page 3

5 Who to Tell? by Oak Class Oak class talked about who they should tell about bullying and they each painted a picture. Here are a few samples of their paintings. Something to discuss at home who would YOU tell? How many people can you think of?

6 How to Recognize Bullying by Beech Class Pulling hair and being mean on purpose. Punching and hurting on purpose. Laughing and calling names, on purpose. Leaving people out and never letting them play. Ganging up on someone all the time and making them feel unhappy. MORE THAN ONCE!

7 How to Stop Bullying by Beech Class Don t keep it to yourself Tell your TA about it Tell Mrs L-B about it. Tell your teacher about it. Tell your parents about it. TELL THE BULLY TO STOP!

10 Willow Class and Their Anti-bullying Hands! Identifying bullying behavior... Finally here is a list of the kinds of bullying that your children have identified this week Verbal Bullying : The bully says things to you Name calling, not just calling you names but calling your loved one names this can be very hurtful Threatening you, by saying someone is going to hurt you, or they are waiting for you after school. Physical Bullying : the bully does things to you Hitting, kicking, biting, scratching, pushing, tripping you up on purpose. Anything that hurts you by touching you is physical bullying. This is a criminal offence and nobody is allowed to hit you. Indirect Bullying the bully is unkind in other ways Ignoring someone, leaving them out or not allowing them to join in a game Spreading rumours, talking about you behind your back and saying things that are not true The bad eyes, someone glaring or giving you threatening looks, this is very difficult to prove but can be just as horrid. Technological Bullying the bully is unkind from a distance Encouraging others to take part in bullying by text or online. Using chat rooms to spread gossip and hurt peoples feelings Sending nasty text messages
