The business and technology areas of Dyersburg State Community College make up the business unit. The programs that are not accredited by ACBSP are as follows: Associate of Applied Science Degree-General Technology-Major and Concentration Associate of Applied Science Degree-Computer Information Technology Major-Software Application Concentration Associate of Applied Science Degree-Computer Information Technology Major-Networking & Cyber Security Concentration Computer Systems Operations & Maintenance Certificate Networking and Cyber Security Certificate Dyersburg State is in the process of a total website redesign. The new Business and Technology homepage will clearly differentiate between the programs within the business unit that are accredited by the ACBSP. The non-accredited programs will list an explanation of their program review process. In addition, the catalog states that the Business programs are accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs. There is a link to data statistics on the DSCC website that is provided by the Office of Institutional Advancement, and it clearly designates the areas of Business Related Technology as being ACBSP accredited.

Organizational Performance Results. Dyersburg State is moving forward with a website redesign. This redesign will result in improved functionality and create a better tool to interact with students and other visitors. Our Business and Technology webpage will be home to the most recent QA and self-study reports. The website will also clearly differentiate program reviews and accreditations for various programs within the business unit. The Business and Technology homepage will contain a link to the most recent QA report in its entirety. The self-study will also be available as a link and the webpage will contain an additional link to the ACBSP website. The DSCC business unit continues to conduct advisory committee meetings annually. Effective use of advisory committees provides the college with information regarding local business needs and therefore impacts curricular changes, assists with growing our cooperative education work-sites, allows us to share with the community information on assessment, curriculum, number of graduates, job placement rates and student performance. This partnership between the college and the business community is very important to the success of the programs. Ideas are solicited from the advisory committee as to community needs. The advisory committee meetings are very effective tools for creating mutually beneficial partnerships between higher education and the local business community. The business unit also conducts assessment on student learning each academic year. Some of this information is included in the DSCC Quality Assurance Report which, as previously stated, will be available on the DSCC Business and Technology homepage. The advisory committee is also made aware of any significant opportunities for improvement identified in the area of student learning. Dyersburg State is a learner-center institution and strives to continuously improve student learning within the business unit and provide our students with the skills necessary to succeed as effective members of the business community. In addition, the catalog is on the DSCC website and is updated annually. Information in program brochures and other advertising materials is kept current and distributed to interested individuals or organizations.

Effective June 2010 the Division of Business and Technology began reporting directly to the Assistant Vice President for Learning. See Appendix A, page 21-22, DSCC Organizational Chart. b. List all new sites where students can earn an accredited business degree (international campus, off-campus or on campus, on-line) that have been added since your last report. No new sites have been added since the last report.

7 Dyersburg State Community College ACBSP QA Repot Student Surveys of faculty: All business faculty will receive a 2.5 or above on student evaluations Advisory Committee: Accounting Advisory Committee, Business Management Advisory Committee Meeting and Administrative Office Support Advisory Committee Annual student evaluations Advisory Committee Minutes YR # A review of the advisory committee minutes indicates a positive and responsive relationship between the college and the local business community. The advisory committees meet annually and provide advice and support that We exceeded our target of 2.5 or better on the student evaluations. All instructors individually exceeded the target. The group also exceeded the target number with 3.1. This data does factor into faculty evaluations, and administration does review and discuss the feedback offered by the students with faculty members. DSCC has a focus on implementing innovative teaching strategies in the classroom to engage the learner and increase student retention and success. These strategies and the results of the implementation of these Student evaluations are a major source of teaching feedback. They are used to make changes to teaching methods to create a better learning environment. We will continue to use student evaluations as one measure of instruction. Student engagement increased. There is no baseline comparative data however the faculty felt that the activity kept the interest of the students. A member of the Accounting Advisory committee suggested incorporating student response devices into the classroom in the Accounting course. This was implemented. meetings. P-16 Meeting: Biannual Meetings The council is comprised of practicing educators, administrators and business leaders focused on raising rates of high school graduation, alignment of high school-tocollege academic standards and needs of the business community. The council provides for collaboration between key stakeholders for introducing statewide P-16 initiatives. Working with this group helps provide students with a more seamless transition between high school, college and employment. The employers inform educators of current workplace needs. Dual enrollment and dual credit opportunities are discussed and processes improved through this type of communication. Meeting minutes available upon request.

Program Outcomes List outcomes, by accredited program - Program outcomes should be used as part of a student learning assessment plan and be measurable. ACCOUNTING General Program Outcomes 1. Perform financial accounting functions such as analyzing transactions, the adjusting process and completing the accounting cycle using proper format and procedure based on GAAP. 2. Perform managerial accounting functions using proper format and procedure. 3. Have a working knowledge of financial statements and reports for service, merchandising and manufacturing companies. 4. Demonstrate basic understanding of taxation for individuals. 5. Demonstrate professional business communication skills 6. Perform accounting functions (journal entries, trial balances, posting, etc.) in both manual and a computerized environment. Currently measured student learning results shown in Standard 4 Table. Examples of a direct assessment (evidence) of student learning attainment that might be used include: capstone performance, third-party examination, faculty-designed examination, professional performance, licensure examination). Fall 2010 scores fell below our desired threshold of 60%. Cooperative learning strategies are being implemented in the course. An interactive software accounting tool is being incorporated into the class to further engage the learner and provide immediate feedback on assignments. Although the action from the previous assessment did not result in meeting the desired threshold, we continue to utilize new innovative teaching strategies. The use of board games, cooperative learning assignments, student response devices as well as new software is being incorporated to improve student learning. We will monitor the effectiveness of the implementation of the Applia software. Critical Thinking Skills: To meet or exceed the 50 th percentile for critical thinking scores and/or exceed the average for the college for all disciplines. The number of AOS graduates for the academic year from Argos report. (internal/ comparative) DSCC has changed the assessment tool used to measure the critical thinking skills of graduates. Prior years utilized the California Critical Thinking Skills Test. The graduates were measured using the Proficiency Profile; this tool measures four areas in a single test and reports year # Critical Thinking : 54.1% : Sub score 110: All Disciplines 111 at DSCC: 50 th percentile is 110 We had only 8 AOS graduates in , but this increased to 10 AOS graduates for the academic year. We did meet our desired number of 10 students. We continue to advertise and promote the program. Currently the AOS program director is working with the Perkins Career Technical Education Retention Specialist to develop a short commercial advertising the AOS program. In 2009, the business area exceeded the 50 th percentile in critical thinking scores. When comparing the overall subscores of the Proficiency Profile, critical thinking scores are very close to the scores of DSCC students in all disciplines and meet the 50 th percentile nationally. We We did meet our desired number of ten graduates. We will work toward maintaining our number of graduates. In an effort to improve critical thinking skills of all DSCC students, faculty members are offered opportunities to receive training to incorporate critical thinking modules within their courses. All faculty members received mandatory training from outside consultants in Spring Dr. Peter Facione and

13 Dyersburg State Community College ACBSP QA Repot critical thinking skills as a subscore. We cannot compare the scores of the instruments but can compare the subscore of business students against all disciplines for the academic year. (External/ Comparative) have just received the new scores and will be working on further interpretation and analysis of the data. Dr. Carol Ann Gittens presented, Critical Thinking: What It Is and Why It Counts. Funds are provided for faculty to receive additional training on research-based innovative teaching and technology strategies which include critical thinking to enhance student learning. Key indicators may include: professional development, scholarly activities, community service, administrative duties, business and industry interaction, number of advisees, number of committees, number of theses supervised, satisfaction or dissatisfaction of faculty and staff, positive, productive, and learning-centered environment, safety, absenteeism, turnover, or complaints.

Administration allocates faculty based on a formula that indicates areas of greatest need. They are very supportive of the business area. Both AOS instructors retired. We did lose one position to attrition. We hired one new faculty member that serves as both AOS and CIT instructor. We currently have a full-time business instructor that has additional responsibilities requiring release time. However, there are plans to increase the business faculty position to full-time after If we can increase the number of business students, we will be able to obtain additional faculty positions. No complaints were filed during the or school year. responsibility for management and administration of the Title III federal grant designed to promote student success and retention. At the conclusion of the grant, the business faculty will resume a full teaching load. The number of business students as well as state funding has decreased and that impacted administration s allocation of fulltime faculty members for the department. Administration provides avenues for faculty to express concerns. The faculty can also bring issues to faculty assembly to be addressed. Administrators (assistant vicepresidents, vice president, and president) will continue to encourage faculty to express concerns so that they may be resolved. Faculty satisfaction can contribute to a more effective learning environment.

For the School year there will be changes in the University Parallel degree/degrees offered as the college offers Tennessee transfer pathways in accordance with TBR (Tennessee Board of Regents). The creation of these pathways ensures the student s ability to make a seamless transition from community colleges in Tennessee to Tennessee Universities. However, we are reporting on the and academic years. The only substantial change to the curriculum In the accredited business programs occurred in the Associate of Applied Science, Business Related Technology Major, Management Concentration. This change eliminated the special emphases within the degree. In three areas of emphasis existed; Industrial Emphasis, Service Emphasis, and Retail Emphasis. The new curriculum does not offer an emphasis but allows students to choose from among the courses in the former areas of special emphasis for the required electives. 2. Adequate financial resources are vital to ensuring an outstanding faculty and teaching environment. The resources budgeted for and allocated to business units should be adequate to fund the necessary technology and training to allow students to develop the requisite competencies for business environments. Approved budget all areas , , , , ,700 Budget Breakdown Budgeted funds for Business and Technology have decreased in accordance with a more restrictive budget. This is also impacted by the number of students enrolled in business programs at DSCC. Budget Breakdown: Technology Administration has decreased as the division was restructured as indicated on the organizational chart. The Administrative Office budget was affected by the loss of one position. Business/ Management was also impacted by the transition to a part-time business teacher. Budget has steadily declined. The budget has declined as state funds have been reduced. State appropriations in were 7.7 million dollars. Currently, state appropriations are 6.5 million although we currently serve a 40 percent larger student population. We have been fortunate to secure qualified adjuncts to teach in order to minimize the impact of the decrease in funding on the quality of education offered to the business students. Improved classroom enrollment strategies also allow the college to make the most of the dollars that are available. It is important to monitor this number when the overall budget is declining. Budget per Business Student increased slightly for the academic year. However, this was not due to an increase in overall dollars in the budget. We will continue to look at the relationship between number of students and overall budget. 28 Dyersburg State Community College ACBSP QA Repot Increase accessdual enrollment: Add one or more additional sections of dual enrollment business classes each year. Sections offered and made each academic year. Year No. 2008/ / /11 2 The business unit only offered two dual enrollment courses during the 2010/2011 academic year. We are now equipped to offer dual enrollment to high schools through Interactive Television (ITV) and hope this will increase our offerings. We also have redesigned the dual credit offerings in order to attract more students. We continue to work with the local high schools to meet their needs in regards to business courses. Although we did not achieve our goal to increase dual enrollment courses we have expanded our delivery methods for business courses and now offer courses online, as hybrid and through Interactive Television. The courses are also open to dual enrollment students. We persist in our efforts to increase our dual enrollment numbers. We will continue to monitor and look for improvements from the use of our dual credit as a marketing strategy for the high school students and the increased use of Interactive Television Dual Enrollment Courses Dual Enrollment

We did have increases each year except for Fall 11 when we experienced a decline in number of students for all business majors. One possible explanation is that when the economy is less robust, students move toward the careers listed as recession proof which tend to be more healthcare related professions. All areas of the business unit are working on marketing and recruitment strategies. Although we did not increase the number of preparations by 20 percent each year we did increase the number of tax preparations from Spring 09 to Spring 11 by 37% percent. We will continue to focus on improving enrollment. We will look for improvement from newlyimplemented marketing strategies, such as commercials that run locally, updated brochures, attending career fairs and our website redesign. We continue to work with our community in various ways. DSCC students in Income Tax Accounting partner with United way to provide VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program), which is also sponsored

DSCC is committed to providing service learning opportunities for its students that address the key needs of the community. This service positively impacts the financial stability of residents of our service area and enhances our goal of improving the quality of life for residents of our area. This effort resulted in many families in our community being able to obtain free assistance and resulted in more accurate refunds received in a timely manner. By providing members access to affordable tax preparation services, dollars are put back into their hands and into our service area.

33 Dyersburg State Community College ACBSP QA Repot Appendix B Accounting Advisory Committee Tipton County Minutes The Accounting Advisory Committee met on May 6, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at the Jimmy Naifeh Center in Covington, TN. Present: Mr. Danny Byrd Mr. Rick Tankersley Mr. Joe Griggs Dr. Karen Bowyer Dr. Mary Ann Sellars Ms. Linda Ballard Mr. Doug Teague Dr. Bowyer welcomed everyone to the meeting. She mentioned that the enrollment at Dyersburg State has grown by 28%. Dyersburg State is offering a new Associate of Applied Science degree in Agriculture. Students would take two years at Dyersburg State and then transfer to U.T. Martin and complete the other two years. She said farm work is more technical now and skilled workers are needed. Dr. Bowyer reviewed the Tipton County headcount data with the committee. She said that 978 people from Tipton County chose Dyersburg State as their college of choice and 150 of them were high school dual enrollment students. Dr. Bowyer reviewed the Call to Action for Our Students handout. Dyersburg State is proposing two new Interactive TV labs to be placed in high schools. She mentioned that Chemistry is being taught by interactive TV now between Dyersburg and Covington. She said the cost would be $40,000 per room and Dyersburg State needs a match of $20,000. Some community businesses have said they might help with the cost and more help is needed. She reviewed the Economic Impact handout and said that Dyersburg State adds $45.6 million per year to the area economy. She mentioned the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program which helps low income level people complete tax returns. The program is offered at Covington and Dyersburg during tax season. She reviewed the Education and Training Pay handout which shows more earning power for people with degrees. She said Dyersburg State will have approximately 270 graduates this year and they will earn $8,000 more per year than high school graduates. She told the committee that she appreciates their support and help. Mr. Teague addressed the committee. He said enrollment in Accounting has improved since last year. He mentioned that a lot of students need to go to work after completing two years of college. He said students can take cooperative education courses which give them practical experience and Dyersburg State is always searching for sites. Mr. Griggs said he has had internship students from the vocational schools and it worked well. The graduate resumes were reviewed. Linda Ballard reviewed the Associate of Science degree in Accounting, Associate of Science degree in Business Administration, and the Associate of Science transfer degree in Business with the committee. Dr. Bowyer mentioned that the degrees had to be decreased to 60 semester hours in 2002 and

The committee agreed that the courses were appropriate for entry-level positions. Employers look for people with experience. Rick Tankersley said he wants someone who is going to stay. He was glad to see that Business & Office Communications was included in the degree. Business and report writing skills are very important along with good communication skills. The committee toured the Interactive TV room at the Jimmy Naifeh Center. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. Present: Mr. Steve Bennett Ms. Kerrie Heckethorn Ms. Susan Dew Mr. Bob Warren Ms. Rhonda Lee Dr. Kevin Cook Ms. Laura Beth Butler Mr. Joe Enoch Mr. Bob Newbill Mr. Paul Carson Ms. Penny Guthrie Dr. Karen Bowyer Mr. Doug Teague Ms. Linda Ballard Ms. Julie Frazier Dr. Kay Patterson Dr. Bowyer welcomed everyone to the meeting. She informed the committee that Mr. Teague is retiring after 3 years with the college. Dr. Kay Patterson will be the supervisor of the division along with Arts and Sciences. Dr. Bowyer mentioned that enrollment is ahead of last year by 43% for Fall. She said with the current economic conditions, more people are going to school. Dyersburg State is starting a new Associate of Science degree in Agriculture. One class will be taught the second summer session and three other classes taught in the fall. Students will take two years at Dyersburg State and then transfer to UT Martin to complete the other two years. Also, a 23 credit hour certificate in Agriculture has been developed. She mentioned the summer College for Kids program which offers all kinds of classes for children beginning at age 4. She told the group that Dyersburg State will soon have some new signage. The signs will be more up-to-date and more attractive than the old ones. There will be two electronic signs, one at Lake Road and one at Parr Avenue. Mr. Teague addressed the committee. He said he has enjoyed working at Dyersburg State. He reviewed the Associate of Applied Science degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Management, and the Associate of Science transfer degree in Business. The course requirements were discussed. The degrees require a total of 60 semester hours. Out of those 60 hours, 15 semester hours are general education courses. Mr. Enoch asked if College

36 Dyersburg State Community College ACBSP QA Repot Algebra would be a more suitable mathematics course than Statistics. It was decided that Statistics would be better because it teaches students practical information that they will use each day. Linda Ballard discussed the Certified Bookkeeper Review course which is a capstone course and incorporates everything students have learned into one course. The course prepares students for the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB) Certified Bookkeeper examination. She said that Accounting I and II and Income Tax Accounting are taught by hand. Mr. Teague said a cooperative education class could be used as an elective. On-the-job experience is very important. Students work 8 hours per week and receive 3 hours credit. Dr. Cook asked if there were enough places for students to work if cooperative education was mandatory. Julie Frazier said that a lot of our students are non-traditional students and already have jobs. Kerrie Heckethorn mentioned that some laws have changed concerning co-op students and that students must be paid. Mr. Warren said that human resources skills are needed. Rhonda Lee suggested that employment law is needed. Mr. Teague said the Human Resources course could be an elective course. Linda Ballard said some employment law is included in the Business Law course. Labor law is also included in the Business Law course. Kerrie Heckethorn mentioned that a Sociology course would be good. Doug Teague said he advises students to take Ethics as a Humanities elective. Mr. Enoch said he sees people that are not prepared for an interview such as not being dressed appropriately. He wanted to know if interview skills were taught. Proper interview skills are taught in the Business & Office Communications course. Julie Frazier said within the next few years we will be focusing on career counseling and working on the whole person. Julie said that new learning strategies will need to be put in place. She has attended workshops that emphasized keeping the students engaged. If they get bored, you lose them. Games have been suggested to keep their attention. Bob Newbill said when he taught adjunct accounting, he told his students that they would need to spend a minimum of 2 hours outside of class for every hour in class. He reviewed their homework. Julie said she tells her students the same thing. Julie mentioned that she is teaching a Principles of Accounting class from 5:00-6:25 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays this fall. Linda Ballard discussed online classes. She said some students do well in online courses and some do not. Online classes are very flexible which helps students who also work. There is a larger drop-out rate and failure rate in Accounting. Accounting is a high risk course. We are taking measures to improve the success rate by offering accounting labs. Julie mentioned that some subjects are more conducive to online learning. Accounting is harder and even students who read the book still need one-on-one help. Dr. Bowyer mentioned that Dyersburg State is using Interactive television to teach classes. This spring Chemistry has been taught by interactive television to students at Covington from Dyersburg and instructor meets labs at each location. Dr. Bowyer mentioned that funding has changed and previously Dyersburg State received funding based upon enrollment. Funding will now be based upon the number of graduates. Dr. Bowyer reviewed the Fact Sheet, Economic Impact statement and annual fund contribution handout.

Present: Teresa Keeton Tompson Yuketa Hall Twila Ward Nancy Austin Kerrie Heckethorn Dr. Karen Bowyer Dr. Mary Ann Sellars Dr. Kay Patterson Dr. Bowyer thanked everyone for coming to the meeting. She mentioned that Ms. Reynolds and Ms. Estes have retired from the Administrative Office Support area and that we plan to continue to offer the classes. She reviewed the Spring Fact Sheet and said that spring enrollment headcount was 3,291 with full-time equivalent being 2,129. She reviewed the fall 2010 enrollment headcount and said that we are currently showing an increase of 9.5% over last year. She told the committee that classes begin on August 28. She informed the committee that Dyersburg State is offering a new Agriculture degree through a grant and we are recruiting students for that program. The committee introduced themselves. Dr. Kay Patterson told the committee that the Arts and Sciences and Business and Technology Divisions have been combined. Her title has changed to Assistant Vice President for Learning and both divisions are under her direction. She reviewed the enrollment and graduation rate for the Administrative Office Support (AOS) classes. Currently, there are 187 students enrolled in AOS classes and there were 5 graduates in 2010 with one summer graduate pending. She asked the committee to review the current degree plan and course descriptions for possible curriculum changes. She asked the committee to think about what courses are needed. She asked the committee to consider if the students are getting the courses they need to go out in the work world. Yuketa Hall said Microsoft Outlook would be a good course. Nancy Austin said that the program struggles and does not attract many people. Kerrie Heckethorn said that banking employees need all of the courses. Dr. Sellars mentioned that some of the AOS courses are very similar to the computer information courses. Dr. Patterson asked the committee to review the handout listing possible curriculum changes. Technical writing was mentioned as replacing Business & Office Communications. Kerrie mentioned that not all students will need Web Design. It was decided that students could chose either Web Design or PowerPoint. Teresa Keeton Tompson said that Professional Development is a very beneficial course and she thought it should be mandatory. Twila Ward said that they have combined Intro. to Computers
