1 FULTON SUN SHIELD INSTRUCTIONS Compliments of NOR-MARtm ENTERPRISES Many of us have, or are seeking the Fulton Sun Shield (Sunvisor) for our 1930's through 1950's collector cars. The Fulton Company, then located in Milwaukee, WI, made several different models of these during this period. While you may be able to find the Sun Shields at swap meets, old car parts suppliers or even on ebay, you will rarely find the instructions. Because of this we requested and received permission from the Fulton Company to publish the instruction pamphlet on our Web Site. The Fulton Company has no records of these left in their files and no one is employed by Fulton with any knowledge of the Sun Shield. For this reason it is requested they not be contacted regarding information for this product. Although we have a copy of the original instructions, our knowledge is limited to that information which is printed below. Step 1: Identification of parts and sub assemblies: Each Sun Shield consists of the following parts and sub assemblies as illustrated and identified by number. 1. Left Hand Panel. 2. Right Hand Panel. 3. Center section sub assembly. 4. Front and rear connection yokes. 5. Side mounting bracket assemblies. 6. Envelope 6 containing screws for attaching side brackets to door jamb. 7. Envelope 7 containing screws for attaching side panels to connecting yoke. 8. Envelope 8 containing center support clamps for use on cars having wide center windshield moulding. Step 2: Dismantle upper and lower plates of center section by removing three (3) screws as shown below. (2 of 21)5/2/ :52:25

3 Step 3: Masking of the Sun Shield for painting (See Step 4 below). Step 4: When preparing the Sun Shield for final painting, the under side of the shield should be masked as show above, to preserve the dull green finish which has been baked on during manufacture. The under side should remain green since this has been scientifically determined as the color which absorbs the maximum amount of light, and therefore provides the greatest protection from sun glare. No further prime coat is necessary before applying finish coat to match the car. We suggest the use of synthetic paint rather than lacquer as a finish medium because of its greater durability. However, the prime surface now on the sun shield will take either a lacquer or a synthetic enamel finish equally well. The surface of the various parts of the sun shield must be absolutely clean before application of the finish coat. Grease or other finger marks on the surface may result in blistering or peeling of the finish coat upon drying. To clean, we recommend that the shield be wiped with a clean cloth which has been dampened with naphtha. After wiping, allow sufficient time for the naphtha to evaporate before painting. Painters are cautioned to make certain that there is no moisture or water in the air lines leading to the paint gun, as a film of lacquer or paint containing small droplets of water will blister upon drying. Step 5: Identification of front and rear connection yokes. The right end of the front connecting yoke is dyed red. The right end of the rear connecting yoke is dyed yellow. Note that the holes in the front and rear connecting yokes are numbered 1,2,3, and 4. Check attached sheet giving "comprehensive data for assembly and installation of Fulton Shields" to determine which set of holes will be required for each installation. (3 of 21)5/2/ :52:25

4 Step 6: Assemble connecting yokes to right hand panel 2, by placing the red end of the front connecting yoke into the front roll and the yellow end of the rear connecting yoke into the rear roll as indicated by stamp on panel. Using the set of holes as determined in Step 5, and using the self-tapping screws found in envelope 7, tighten yokes to panel. Step 7: Assemble left hand panel 1 to connecting yokes as illustrated. Step 8A: (For Model,, 702, ). Assemble upper and lower plates of center section as shown, making sure the screws are tightened securely. For Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Frazer, Hudson, Kaiser, Oldsmobile and Pontiac replace center support clamps with the clamps originally assembled on center supports with the clamps in envelope 8 tied to short center support. Step 8B: (For Model 704). Assemble special center support as shown using the 1/2 inch screws for attaching the special support to the center section. The third screw which does not go through the special support is 7/16 inch long. (4 of 21)5/2/ :52:25

5 Step 9A: (For Model,, 702). Check attached Comprehensive Data for assembly and installation of Fulton Sun Shields for Dimension "A" in locating side mounting brackets. Dimension "A" is the recommended distance between the lower edge of the rain gutter and the lower edge of the bracket foot, except as otherwise indicated in the "Comprehensive Data Sheet." Use side mounting brackets as templates, locate and center punch and drill 4 holes, using No. 30 (.8) drill. When attaching brackets be sure they are tight against the under side of rain gutter. Step 9B: (For Model ). The side mounting brackets for the Model (unlike those for Models,, 702 and 704) attach to the face of the cowl post, as shown in illustration to the left below. Dimension "A" is the distance from the lower edge of the bracket foot to the bottom of post, or rain gutter, while Dimension "C" is the distance from the upper edge of bracket foot to the top of the cowl post. In locating the proper position for the brackets of the Model Shield it will help materially to assemble the shield, being sure to use recommended hole numbers as covered in Step 5. With the complete shield assembled place the brackets of the shield in the proper position on the cowl post, being sure that the sides of the brackets are perpendicular to the ground. Outline the position of the bracket foot with a soft pencil and remove brackets from end panels before actually marking the three holes to be drilled. Use No. 30 (.8) drill, and use selftapping screws furnished for attaching bracket to cowl post. (5 of 21)5/2/ :52:25

6 Step 9C: (For Model 704). The brackets for the Model 704 Shield vary slightly from those of the No. in that the self-tapping screws go up into the door frame, rather than into the door jamb (as illustrated). Dimension "A" is determined in the same manner as shown in Step 9A. Step 10: Assemble side brackets to panel assembly. For most cars, place rubber washer on bolt, cover with spacer cup, insert bolt through hole in panel, place lock washer in position and tighten nut. For Packard Clipper, Kaiser and Frazer, place spacer cup over bolt first; then rubber washer over bolt and assemble as above. Step 11: Using self- tapping screws in envelope 6, attach side brackets of sun shield to door jambs. Step : (For,, 702, ). After determining the desired height of the front edge of the Sun Shield, locate and clamp lower support to windshield center moulding as shown. To more easily insert clamps between rubber and chrome moulding, and to prevent crowding rubber moulding, moisten knife blade and loosen rubber moulding from chrome moulding. Moisten clamps and rubber moulding before inserting clamps. Attach upper clamp to center moulding in the same manner so as to give desired clearance between rear edge of Sun Shield and top of car. Always allow clearance between Sun Shield and radio aerial. CAUTION: To avoid damage to seal between the glass and rubber moulding or windshield, be sure clamping members of center supports are between the chrome moulding and rubber moulding. Do not loosen screws inside center moulding. (6 of 21)5/2/ :52:25

7 Step : (For Models 704). Raise hood of car and attach bracket foot tight against cowling flange to permit clearance between edge of hood and bracket foot, as shown in second illustration at the left. Be sure that the bracket foot is mounted exactly in the center. First illustration on the left shows the two adjustments to be made in securing desired height of the front edge of the sun shield. Step 14: Attach side support arms as shown at left. Step 15: Level entire front edge of Sun Shield by raising or lowering ends. Tighten all screws.
