1 WALKABOUT 5210 AND 5215 SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR UPDATING YOUR PC SOFTWARE AND RECORDER FIRMWARE Updating Your Walkabout Transfer and Walkabout Write PC Software If you have a version of the Walkabout software that is prior to Version 1.4.1, you can download the software and firmware for Version from the Dictaphone Web site. You can then install this updated software on your PC and the firmware on your Walkabout 5210 or 5215 recorder. Four steps are needed to download and install the version software/firmware for your Walkabout 5215 components: 1. Download the files from the dictaphone.com Web site by clicking the Update Service link in your Walkabout Transfer or Walkabout Write application. 2. Uninstall the previous version of Walkabout Transfer or Walkabout Write that you currently have on your PC. 3. Extract the downloaded files and install the new software. 4. Update the firmware on your Walkabout 5215 recorders. Note: Be aware that you cannot install and run both the Walkabout Transfer and Walkabout Write software on the same PC. If you need to have the transfer and transcription capabilities on a single PC, you should install and run only the Walkabout Write software. It contains both the transfer and transcription/write capabilities. To download the latest version of the Walkabout software and firmware: 1. Double-click the Walkabout Transfer icon or the Walkabout Write icon on your desktop to open the application. 2. In the left pane, select the Configuration icon. The Configuration dialog box opens. 2 3. Click the Update Server tab at the bottom of the dialog box to display the Update Service link. 4. Click the Update Service link to connect to the Walkabout 5210/5215 Downloads page on the Dictaphone Web site. 5. For the Walkabout 5210 downloads and information, scroll down the page to the items you need. OR For the Walkabout 5215 downloads and information, click the link that directs you to the Walkabout 5215 downloads page. 6. Locate the link for the Walkabout Transfer Version software. Click this link to download the Walkabout Transfer software that also includes the firmware for your recorder. Download the new Walkabout Transfer software to the PC where you run the Walkabout Transfer application. OR Locate the link for the Walkabout Write Version software. Click this link to download the Walkabout Write software that also includes the firmware for your recorder. Download the new Walkabout Write software to the PC where you run the Walkabout Write application. 7. When prompted to do so, click Save to save the download zip file WalkaboutTransfer B exe or WalkaboutWrite B exe on your computer. 8. In the Save As dialog box, navigate to and select your Temp folder (C:/Temp) where you can save the downloaded file. This file can be deleted from this folder after the software has been successfully installed. 9. Click Save to begin the download. When the download is finished, click Close and continue with the following procedures for installing the software and the firmware. To uninstall the existing version of the Walkabout Transfer/Walkabout Write software: To install the new version of the Walkabout Transfer or Walkabout Write software, you must first uninstall the existing version that is on your PC. 1. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel. The Control Panel opens. 2. On the Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.the Add/ Remove Programs window opens listing all of your installed programs. 3. Scroll down the list of installed programs until you locate Dictaphone Walkabout Transfer or Dictaphone Walkabout Write. 4. Click the name of the program that you want to remove from your PC so it is highlighted. 2

3 5. Click the Change/Remove button. The InstallShield Wizard starts and opens the Welcome window for the Walkabout Transfer Setup or the Walkabout Write Setup presenting you with the options to modify, repair, or remove the program. 6. Select the Remove radio button to Remove all installed components and click Next. 7. In the Confirm Uninstall box that opens, click OK. 8. If you get the Shared File Detected message, click No each time this message is displayed. Clicking No allows you to save the files that contain your configuration settings and user profiles. These files can then be used when you reinstall the Walkabout Transfer or Walkabout Write software so that you do not have to re-create this information. 9. When the uninstall process is finished and Maintenance Complete is displayed, click Finish to end the InstallShield Wizard. At this point, the Walkabout Transfer or Walkabout Write application has been removed from your PC. To install the new version of the Walkabout Transfer/Walkabout Write software: 1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the Temp folder where you saved the downloaded files. 2. Double-click the WalkaboutTransfer B exe or WalkaboutWrite B exe file and then click Extract to extract the files. 3. When the files are finished being extracted, click OK. The InstallShield Wizard starts automatically. 4. Choose the desired setup language and click OK. 3

4 5. Continue through the InstallShield Wizard by clicking Next or Yes as indicated in the installation procedures that came with your Walkabout Transfer or Walkabout Write software. 6. When you see the message asking if you want to use the saved files, click Yes. The files that you saved during the uninstall process (those files that contain your configuration settings and user profiles that you established in the previous version of Walkabout Transfer or Walkabout Write) are used in this installation and you do not have to re-create this information. 7. Continue through the installation until it is finished and click Finish. To update the firmware on a single Walkabout 5210 or 5215 recorder: 1. Connect your Walkabout 5210/5215 recorder to your PC and press the ON/OFF button to activate PC mode. The screen displays PC Operation. 2. Double-click the Walkabout Transfer icon or the Walkabout Write icon on your desktop to open the application, which identifies the latest firmware for your recorder. 3. In the left pane, select the Configuration icon. The Configuration dialog box opens. 4. Click the Dictation machine (MMC/SD) tab at the bottom of the dialog box if it is not already displayed. In the Load firmware to dictation machine group box, the Source path identifies the folder in which the current firmware (.hex files) is located. The New firmware version text box identifies the firmware version. Note: You can update the firmware on the recorder only when an older firmware version exists on the recorder. (See the Settings menu and the Firmware version dictation machine display field on your portable recorder to identify the firmware version on the recorder when it s not connected to the PC.) 4

5 5. Click Load firmware. The new firmware is transferred to your Walkabout 5215 recorder and a message box opens to indicate the transfer was successful. Click OK to close this message box. 6. Press the ON/OFF button to turn off the recorder. Unplug the USB cable. 7. Press the ON/OFF button again to turn on the recorder. Note: If you transfer the firmware to an MMC or SD memory card, you can use this MMC/SD card to update the firmware on additional Walkabout recorders. DO NOT format the memory card until you have updated the firmware on all your recorders. 8. Press the ON/OFF button to turn off the recorder. 9. Press the Eject button on the back of the recorder to remove the memory card if one was used. 10. Continue with the procedure below if you need to update the firmware on additional Walkabout recorders. To update the firmware on additional Walkabout 5210 or 5215 recorders: You can update the firmware on additional recorders directly from your PC or from an MMC or SD memory card that contains the firmware. If you use the recorder s internal memory to update the recorder s firmware (that is, without using an MMC or SD memory card), each recorder must be plugged into the PC to upload the new firmware following the steps in the single recorder procedure above. However, using a memory card as described here makes the update process faster for multiple recorders. 1. Insert the memory card that contains the firmware into another Walkabout recorder. 2. Press the ON/OFF button to turn on the recorder and answer OK to install the new firmware. 3. Press the ON/OFF button to turn off the recorder. 4. Press the Eject button on the back of the recorder to remove the memory card so you can use it in the next recorder. 5. Repeat steps 1-4 to install the firmware on each successive Walkabout 5210 or 5215 recorder. 6. When you have finished updating the firmware on each of your Walkabout 5210 or 5215 recorders, you should format the MMC or SD memory card before using it to store your dictations. This establishes the new firmware memory allocation and maintains the memory card in its optimal condition for your continued use. Note: You should check the Dictaphone Web site periodically for any future updates to the firmware for your Walkabout 5210 or 5215 recorder. You can do this very easily by clicking the Update Service link on the Update Server tab of your Walkabout Transfer or Walkabout Write application at any time. To remove the install files from your PC: 1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the Temp folder where you saved the downloaded files. 2. Select and highlight the WalkaboutTransfer B exe and the WalkaboutWrite B exe files in the right pane and press the Delete key on your keyboard. 3. Click Yes to confirm that you want to delete these two files. 5

6 4. In the left pane, locate and select the Walkabout Transfer Install Files folder and press the Delete key on your keyboard. 5. Click Yes to confirm that you want to delete this folder. 6. In the left pane, locate and select the Walkabout Write Install Files folder and press the Delete key on your keyboard. 7. Click Yes to confirm that you want to delete this folder. All of the install files have now been deleted so they do not take up space on your hard drive. 6
