When Sexting Becomes Cyberbullying: Helping Victims Sheri Bauman, Ph.D. University of Arizona Presentation at the NCAB Conference 2016 July 28, 2016 Melbourne, Australia
The Problem Sexting: Transmitting explicit sexual content via digital technology. Sexts can be images, video, or text. Young people refer to naked selfies, nudies and banana pics. Cyberbullying: Bullying via digital technology. Act must be intended to harm, repeated, and committed by someone with greater power than the target. Sexting Becomes Cyberbullying when a sext is shared without permission (and/or knowledge) of the subject to cause humiliation and embarrassment to the target. The intent is to reduce target s social status and damage relationships. 2
Sexting in Australia* An online survey conducted in 2013 included 2243 participants from age 13 adults % heterosexual ~82% % bisexual 9% % gay 2% % lesbian 1% % questioning 6% Sexting behaviors varied by age. Overall, 49% indicated they had sent a sext and 67% had received one. On those 13 15, 38% had sent and 62% received. Most participants had sent a sext to only one person in the previous 12 months. *(Lee, Crofts, McGovern, & Milivojevic, 2015) 3
Why Did You Sext? Female Respondents To be fun and flirty To give a sexy present To feel sexy and confident Male Respondents To be fun and flirty Because I received one As a sexy present *13% said they felt pressured to sext. 4
5
Who sexts?* In general, older adolescents (ages 14 17) engage in sexting more frequently than early adolescents(ages 12 and 13). Older adolescents experience increased sexual interest. Gender differences vary by country. Youth who score higher on measures of sensationseeking and risk-taking are more likely to sext. Some youth believe this is a normal part of growing up ( everyone is doing it ). Some youth think sexting is safer than other forms of sexual experimentation. *Baumgartner, Sumter, Peter, Valkenburg, & Livingstone,
The Context of Sexting Images are shared with romantic partner to prove their love and commitment to show they are sexy in response to pressure to have safer sexual encounters Images are shared with hoped-for romantic partner a kind of flirting Sometimes they are sent to shock others, or as a joke. 7
How is sexting transmitted? Text message Snapchat Kik Messenger Instagram direct message Vine direct message What sapp Tumblr Viber and more 8
When a sext is shared with a partner, who then shares without permission from the subject, it becomes cyberbullying. Targets of this behavior often experience other bullying (e.g., slutshaming ) from peers once the sext has circulated. Perpetrators and targets could be prosecuted under the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act of
A survey* in Great Britain of year-olds found that 37% had sent a naked image of themselves. 49% said it was harmless fun and 39% said they sent it to receive photos back. Of those, 24% said their image had been shared without their consent. Of those, 24% said they harmed themselves, 26% said they thought about suicide, and 12% made a suicide attempt when they learned their image had been shared.* *Survey was conducted by Ditch the Label and reported in Irish Examiner on October 15, Participants were recruited from Habbo, an online virtual world. 10
Are Youth Unaware of Danger? Dr. Murray Lee* (University of Sydney) noted that only 6% of survey participants send that had send a received image to a third party. He said girls avoided using their real names when sexting, and ensured photos did not reveal their face. *Marriner,

Sexting Prevention Messages stress the dangers Once the image is online you have no control It can negatively affect you for the rest of your life. For example, college admissions job opportunities Given these messages and the experience of betrayal and humiliation, it is critical to provide assistance to victims. 13
Targets of Cyberbullying via Sexting Those who have been victimized via cyberbullying and sexting are likely to exhibit symptoms of disorders for which evidence-based treatment is available: Depression Anxiety PTSD 14
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Used to treat depression in adolescents Effective with suicidal adolescents Effective for anxiety disorders in children and adolescents Focuses on the cognitive triad Help client dispute cognitive distortions Challenge: cognitions may not be very distorted 15
Cognitive restructuring is basic to CBT, and very challenging in sexting cases: Everyone has seen the photo Everyone thinks/says I m a whore, slut, etc. Even if the photo is taken down, it could reappear and ruin my chances for college, job, etc. 16
17
Using CBT: Considerations Adult helper must understand the problem and technology Minimizing can exacerbate the problem Lack of understanding of technology tells the youth that you are unable to help them Self-monitoring of mood and other symptoms should be introduced several apps for that, e.g., icouch CBT BellyBio Moodscope 18
Initial Assessment Assess for suicidality. In addition to standard questions, ask, What could happen to push you to the point of wanting to end your life? Use established measures (e.g., Beck Youth Inventory) to assess depression, anxiety, anger, disruptive behavior, and self-concept. Re-assess periodically to evaluate treatment approach. Refer to physician/psychiatrist for evaluation for medication if appropriate. 19
Behavioral Interventions Design a strategy to reduce re-visiting offending texts, images, etc. Consider relaxation and systematic desensitization for reducing anxiety Include family to assist in monitoring mood, school attendance, and primarily to enlist support for the teen. Identify sources of social support in and out of school Frequent follow-ups are crucial. 20
21
Possible Strategies Contact police Request restorative justice conference Change schools Close social media accounts Change phone numbers Join anti-bullying groups Take a public position against sexting 22
More Strategies* Contact website and request removal of material Report to authorities (school, law enforcement) Consider legal action Generate positive content to balance the negative Develop an essay to present to college admissions or employer Hire reputation manager (e.g., reputation.com) *while working with mental health professional 23
Help youth frame the episode as a mistake Do not judge Continue involvement and support. Communicate that youth can return even after therapy (or school) has ended. 24
