Abstract An abstract of a maximum of 300 words is useful to provide a summary description of the practice The Cyprus Sports Organization has created Reading Clubs in cooperation with municipalities and communities throughout Cyprus. The children participating in the Cyprus Sports Organization Sports for All programme will also participate in a book club where they will be able to read books on sports-related topics such as athletic training, issues of fair play, sporting ethics, the cultural dimension of sports and the athletes who are part of their own local community. Through this process sport becomes part of the local community by supporting cultural institutions such as libraries. If municipalities want to engage more directly through financial support, the cost will not exceed 500 euros. The programme is aimed at children between 10 and 13 years old who take part in regular meetings at local libraries accompanied by their sports coaches. The meetings will be enriched with readings by politicians, actors, mayors and councillors as well as local and foreign athletes with the aim of reducing racism and violence in sport. 2. 2 9. Objectives 1. Through the collective reading and discussion: - To educate children in sports matters such as fair play, sports honesty and respect for other athletes. - To make children aware of the cultural dimension of sports and its contribution to shaping the character of a person as a social being rather than a super athlete whose only motive is material gain. 2. To develop children's critical thinking. 3. To develop language and children s ability to express their emotions and thoughts as well as to develop interpersonal relationships. 4. To develop a love for reading and for reading to become part of their lives as a daily activity. 5. To create links with local communities, organized groups and associations and former athletes. 6. To encourage reading outside the compulsory school curriculum so that it becomes enjoyable as well as an intellectual and cultural activity. 7. To lay the foundations for the development of a programme to create a literacy environment through mass sport. 10. Main activities (Please describe briefly, referring to time lines or sequences if applicable) coaches The teacher supported the children s reading and helped them extract conclusions about sports ideals. A book consultant and co-ordinator created and promoted the idea and co-ordinated the project. Sports trainers promoted literacy to the children by acting as role models. The children read a pre-selected book in their own time and then discussed it with the teacher and book consultant during sessions as part of their participation in the Sports for All programme. 16. Financing came from the Cyprus Sports Organization Euro for seven months Budget allocation was made by the consultant who created the programme. 19. Benefit incidence (Proportion of the resources and benefits of the programme that go to the most disadvantaged 20% of the population. This indicator has been developed to evaluate development projects and their ability to produce a redistribution / equity effect. It is a crucial indicator to be proposed, taking into account that equity is one of the key dimensions proposed by the High Level Group.) 22. Anything else you think we should know... 4

This was a pilot programme which we believe is a good way to promote literacy and establish a literacy environment through sports organization and clubs. 26.
