2 Wool Market Report November 28th 2016 AUSTRALIA Market leaps to 17-month high Week 49 of the 2014/15 season, when it reached 1,373 cents. However, analysts noted that the spike in the EMI that week was caused by a need to fulfil delivery requirements and a shortage of wool, with no Fremantle sales. The EMI the week before was 1,312 cents and the week after 1,356 cents. If that Week 49 of the 2014/15 season was taken out of the equation, this week s EMI of 1,363 cents is the highest since the 2010/11 season. This week, on Tuesday November 22, sales were held in Melbourne only. The EMI lifted by 2 cents to 1,316n cents but in US dollar terms fell by 10 cents to 973 US cents. On Wednesday November 23 and Thursday November 24 sales were held at all three selling centres. On Wednesday the EMI was up by 25 cents to 1,341 cents and in US dollar terms climbed by 22 cents to 995 US cents. On Thursday, the EMI lifted by a further 22 cents to 1,363 cents and in US dollar terms increased by an additional 9 cents to 1,004 US cents. The Australian wool market surged to a 17-month high this week, as prices spiked in both local currency and US dollar terms. The Australian Wool Exchange (AWEX) Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) climbed by 49 cents (3.7%) for the week to close on 1,363 cents per kilo clean on Thursday, November 24. In US dollar terms, the market rose by 21 cents (2.1%) to close on 1,004 US cents. The Australian dollar against the US dollar finished the week down 0.9% on last week, at 73.8 US cents. However, while the slight weakening of the local currency helped the market, it could not explain the extent of this week s upturn, which was driven by strong buyer interest. The strength of the market was illustrated by the EMI in US dollar terms going back above the 1,000 US cents mark. This week s EMI is the highest since June 2015, in The Merino fleece wools lifted by 4-5% across most of the Micron Price Guides with the exception of 19 microns, which were up 3.8%, and 22 microns, which lifted by 3.7%, as the finer types proved to be the strongest performers once again. The difference between prices for 16.5 and 22 micron Merino wools stretched to 346 cents in the North, and 319 cents in the South. Even crossbred wools lifted this week, mostly rising by %. However, analysts noted that the market remains effectively one of two wool types, with Merino wools continuing to perform significantly better than the crossbred types. This was reflected in the pass-in rates this week, with 1.1% for Merino wools its lowest since the 2010/11 season and 10.4% for crossbred wools. The AWEX Merino Cardings Index continued its recent surge, lifting by 31 cents (2.8%) to 1,137 cents this week. The strong demand for carding types was evidenced by Michell s appearance in the list of top 10 buyers for the week. Skirtings and oddments were also in strong demand. This week s national offering was 47,469 bales, which brought a clearance of 96%. The offering at next week s 2
3 Wool Market Report November 28th 2016 auction is forecast to be 48,603 bales, followed by 45,500 bales the following week and 47,200 bales the week after that. The offerings for the next three weeks are forecast to be 15% higher than the same period last year, as the trade continues to catch up on volumes following the delays to shearing caused by the heavy rains and floods during September and early October. China was the dominant player in the auction room once again this week, with competition from India, Europe and Korea. NEW ZEALAND Most types ease further was 0.64% lower than last week s sale, having minimal positive impact. Subdued demand and continued uncertainty around new market interest in coming weeks is restricting buying activity. Compared to the last similar North Island selection on November 10: good colour fine crossbred fleece were 1-2% dearer with average/poor styles 3-7% cheaper. Good colour fine crossbred shears 3-5 and 3-4 inches were % easier with 2-4 and 2-3 inches firm to 5% dearer. All poorer style fine crossbred shears were 3.5-7% cheaper. Good colour coarse crossbred fleece were firm with poorer styles 7-8% cheaper. Coarse shears 3-5 and 2-4 inches were 1-5% cheaper with 2-3 inches 1.5% dearer. Short oddments ranged from 7-13% cheaper. There was limited competition with Australasia, Western Europe and China principals, supported by the Middle East, India and the UK. Source: Wool Services International SOUTH AFRICA Market 1% lower The wool market traded 1% lower this week and the Cape Wools Merino Indicator decreased by 152 points to close at a value of R (Clean). The Cape Wools All Wool Indicator lost 0.5%. At this week s North Island sale, 7,250 bales of wool on offer saw a 72% clearance with most types easing further. Some good colour types resisted this trend as buyers continued very focused buying with targeted better style wools getting more support. The weighted indicator for the main trading currencies The wool market invariably reflected the rand s intraday gains to the US dollar, which saw prices ease slightly. The demand for South African wool remains healthy and practically all wool delivered to market was taken up. As was expected the longer and better quality wool outperformed the shorter and inferior types. The competition between buyers was intense with Standard Wool and Modiano vying for each lot. This week saw the rand at R14.11 to the US dollar. The rand strengthened by 0.7% against the US dollar compared with the average rate at the previous sale. The rand gained 1.7% against the Euro, trading at 3
4 Wool Market Report November 28th 2016 successfully traded remaining at an overall unchanged average market indicator of R per kg. The weaker SA currency would not support today s market, with the currency once again trading at varying levels. A highest price of R per kg was paid for a bale of super style 25 micron kid hair. R The offering comprised 12,096 bales of which 97% was sold. Major traders were Standard Wool SA (4,219 bales), Modiano (3,974), Lempriere SA (2,075) and Stucken & Co (1,033). The average clean prices for the selection within the different micron categories for good topmaking (MF5), long fleeces were as follows: 18 microns gained 1.7% to close at R171.24/kg; 18.5 microns increased 0.2% to close at R162.71/kg; 19 microns increased 0.6% to close at R163.58/ kg; 19.5 microns lost 0.9% to close at R158.70/kg; 20 microns decreased 1.9% to close at R155.59/ kg; 20.5 microns remained unchanged to close at R147.31/kg; 21 microns lost 1.1% to close at R144.17/kg; 21.5 microns decreased 2.2% to close at R141.91/kg; 22 microns dropped 1% to close at R143.07/kg; and 22.5 microns lost 1.7% to close at R140.17/kg. Source: Cape Wools Mohair Subdued competition leads to 58% clearance The penultimate sale of the 2016 winter season had a larger than usual offering of 145,719 kg. The offering consisted of good quality mohair, with some excellent individual clips, which attracted better interest from the buyers. Overall competition was somewhat subdued, with a large volume of mohair held back by the brokers, which was sold at good levels after the sale, especially the strong adult mohair. This resulted in an overall sales clearance of 58%, with the mohair Compared to the previous sale, prices were as follows: Kids (Winter) unchanged; Young Goats (Winter) down 5%; Fine Adults up 1%; Strong Adults unchanged; Average unchanged. Source: Mohair SA UNITED KINGDOM Prices generally cheaper The ninth sale of the 2016/17 season offered 2,066,471 kg. Following a strong sale of two weeks ago, the market was quieter with prices generally cheaper. The clearance was 67%. Compared to the last time sold: Fine types: 3.5% cheaper. Medium types: No.1.
