2 Make It Fun (Introductory Activities, 15 minutes) Set up the two activities below before class begins. While the children are entering the classroom begin Three Legged Pirate. Let one or two teachers lead activities in the room while another teacher greets parents and kids at the door. 1. Three Legged Pirate What You Need: 2 Bandanas and tape. What You Do: Place a strip of tape on the floor where you want your finish line and gather the children together on the opposite side of the room. Divide the children into two teams and tie together the legs of the first two children on each team team as you would for a three-legged race. The the first sets of children tied together help one another walk across the room and over the finish line first. (Note: It may take doing it a few times for the children to get the hang of it.) What You Say: Come here, everyone! We re going to play a super fun game! First, I ll need to put you in teams. (Divide the children into two-teams.) Next comes the silly part. I m going to tie your legs together! (Begin to tie the legs of the first two children on each team together.) Okay, now we re ready! This is what you have to do. You and your teammate have to help one another walk all the way to that finish line. Think you can help each other do it? (Pause.) Sure, you can! Get ready to walk when I say go. At the end of the activity: Whew! You did it! You helped each other get to the finish line! Way to go! Our Bible story today is about helping each other, too! 2. Spyglass What You Need: Spyglasses What You Do: Show the children the spyglass that you have and allow them time to guess what it is and what it can do. Tell them you are going to pretend to be pirates and you re spying out ways you can help others. Name the things you see through your spyglasses and use them to help you brainstorm ways to help others. What You Say: Arg, mateys! Let s use our spyglass to look around the room and see what we can find. We can use what you see to help us think of ways to help others. I see a table. We can help our parents clear the table after dinner. Do you see toys? We can help clean up our toys. I see food. We can help put groceries away. Do you see a garbage can? We can help throw trash away. (Continue with children s other observations.) At the end of the activity: That was some mighty fine spying! Now there s one more thing I want you to do. I want you to look very closely during our Bible story today and see if you can find a spyglass like the one we just used. It will be in our Bible story, so keep an eye out for it. Got it, little pirates? 2

3 Make It True (Large Group Worship, 20 minutes) This month s songs are on the 2 s / PK Worship DVD. Kids and teachers should play instruments during the verses and then do the motions during the chorus. The motions for the verses are provided if you find them helpful, but we encourage you just to dance around in worship. 1. Music Chose 3-4 songs from the PK Worship DVD to be played through the computer or TV located in your classroom. The words for the songs will be shown on the DVD and hand motions can be found online at Ideas for songs on the PK / 2 s DVD: Butterfly Song Better than the Best In the Beginning God is so Good 2. Verse LEADER: Are you ready to learn this month s memory verse? It s all about the Bible! Your teachings (hold hands like a book) are worth more to me (bring fisted hands to chest like holding something precious) than thousands (hands explode up and out) of pieces of gold and silver (hands in front rubbing fingers together like greedy for money) Psalm 119:72 (open hands like a book). Let s do it together. Are you ready? Do the verse with the kids two or three times. 3. Offering Pass around the offering bag or bucket to collect any offering for today. Say, We collect offering every week to give the first of our money back to God- 2 Chronicles 31:5 says... the Israelites gave generously. They didn t hold back! They brought in a tithe of everything they owned. Let s offer to God with generous hearts our tithes for today. 4. Video Play this week s video from Wonder, Look at God s Story DVD. 5. Prayer Large Group Prayer: Discuss the main point of the video, including the bottom line before praying with the children. Sample prayer: Dear God, thank You for giving us the Bible to help us know the right things to do. We want to do the right thing and help others. Help us to look for ways to help and then do it! We love You, God. In Jesus name, amen. Buddy Prayer: Explain to the children that it is now their turn to pray. Pair the children up. Encourage them to go to a corner or a place in the room so they can talk. Ask them to tell each other something that they can pray about and then encourage them to pray together. It might be helpful to spend a few weeks in small groups and work towards meeting as buddies. 3

4 Make It Stick (Application Activities, 35 minutes) 1. Spyglass What You Need: Spyglass Avery Labels, paper towel rolls, plastic wrap, masking tape, markers, and stickers. What You Do: Give each child a paper towel roll and a small piece of plastic wrap. Help the child cover one of the open ends of the roll with the wrap and secure it with tape. Give the child the markers and the stickers and allow him to decorate his spyglass. When the spyglass is finished, help the child place the label on the side. What You Say: We are going to make our spyglasses out of this. (Hold up paper towel roll.) First we have to make the lens that we look out of. Here is your lens. (Give children some plastic wrap.) We are going to wrap it around one end and cover up the hole. (Help children to secure it with tape.) Now every pirate wants an awesome spyglass, so use your stickers and markers to decorate it. (Allow children to work.) AWESOME! There is one last thing we have to put on out awesome spyglasses. (Give children a label and help them place it on the side.) Great! This says Clubhouse Pirate Adventure. I love being a pirate. AAARRRRG! At the end of the activity: Everyone use your spyglass to look for treasure! (Help the children hold the open end to their eye and look through the plastic wrap.) Do you remember what the greatest treasure of all is? (Pause.) Yes! The Bible! What is better than gold? (Pause.) Always! [Bottom Line] The Bible is better than gold! 3. Response Picture Cards What You Need: Memory verse card and crayons What You Do: Review the memory verse together before turning to the back of the memory verse card. Review what the children have learned about today s story while they color the picture provided. What You Say: God wants us to find ways to help each other. That means that we should help our family and friends. There is a coupon on the back of your memory card. Pick someone in your family that you would like to help. Let s use the pencil and write their names on this line. (Point to the blank at the top of the coupon.) Wonderful! Can you write your name on the bottom lines (Point to the line at the bottom of the coupons.) Awesome writing! Now you can make your coupons beautiful by using stickers to decorate them. Be sure to give the coupons to the people that you have picked so that you can help them when they need you. The Bible tells us that God wants us to help people when they need help. The Bible teaches us important things. It s better than gold. What is better than gold? (Pause.) Absolutely! [Bottom Line] The Bible is better than gold! 3. Happy Helpers What You Need: Snack, napkins, cups. What You Do: Invite the children to help you as you prepare the snack. Give them jobs like handing out napkins, food, cups of water, etc. When snack time is over, invite the children to help you clean the room and get ready for parents. Give them jobs like throwing away garbage, wiping tables, putting away toys, etc. What You Say: Mmm that was a yummy snack. Look! It s almost time for us to go. I need lots of happy helpers to help me get our room ready so we can leave it nice and neat. Who s ready to help? Let s do this! (Note: Make sure to give high fives and encourage the children after they help you. Praise the children for being such happy helpers while parents pick them up.) 4

5 Closing (5 minutes) 1. Snack Time Talk about what other people have done to help the kids. 2. Review Take the time to review this week s story, the bottom line and the memory verse: Your teachings (hold hands like a book) are worth more to me (bring fisted hands to chest like holding something precious) than thousands (hands explode up and out) of pieces of gold and silver (hands in front rubbing fingers together like greedy for money) Psalm 119:72 (open hands like a book) 3. Get Ready to Dismiss Set any take-home creations where you or parents can get them easily. Spyglass Memory Verse Cards Greet parents at the door and tell them that this month preschoolers are learning that [Bottom Line] the Bible is better than gold! Encourage parents to repeat the bottom line at home and help their child understand that [Bottom Line] the Bible is better than gold!
