There is a potential to deliver a new category of information based on social interactions. This information can be used to inform operational processes, facilitate engagement with employees, customers, and business partners. The Social Networks are estimated to have more than billion users by year People use social networks in their private lives but organisations tend to fear them and to lock-down employee access to Social Networks. Everyone agrees that governing of Social Networks is necessary but how to do it without damaging the openness and the need for increased co-operation in the companies? Global R&D requires new networking capabilities but also a need to address intellectual property issues on common projects. Copyright and privacy laws vary from one country to another yet the communication is global. How to protect your organisation when sharing knowledge and information in this new environment? To think about their key goals both individually and as leaders within their organisation. Mr MacLeaod will share what he believes are some fundamental rules and structures required to create high performance people networks. Finally, he will outline how different networks operate and what behaviours are required to create a more systematic and integrated approach to knowledge management, organisation change and business model innovation. Shell has had online CoPs using discussion forum technology for14 years. But we are in a situation where many tools used externally for socializing and just staying connected are going viral throughout organizations. Shell has recently completed a pilot of a tool called Yammer which is a Twitter for the Enterprise type of tool. We have found that some of our formal communities that have thrived using discussion forums, once moved into Yammer, has seen even high levels of participation. So can Yammer be a replacement for traditional discussion board technology? Do different communities have different needs and can actually make use of a host of different tools to stay connected and share knowledge? What are the criteria for using a discussion forum versus a micro-blogging tool such as Yammer?
