If I take an online course, how can I be successful? Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools (WJCC) will continue to expand and invest in online programs for the Summer Program. There are key characteristics that the online student should possess to be successful in an online environment. The following characteristics will enable students to be successful: Self-disciplined While on-line courses allow a great deal of flexibility for a student, they require more independence and self-monitoring. The online learner must be able to stay on task, start and finish assignments in a timely manner without someone keeping you focused, and follow course modules and meet deadlines. Organized Even though you may not have to be in class on a specific day and at a specific time, the online learner will need to follow course modules provided by the instructor and stay on task daily. Scheduling specific times during the day to login and study is important to the success of online learning. Never wait until the last minute to complete assignments. Committed This will require dedication on the student s part. Keeping up with class and completing and submitting all work on time is critical. It is easy to get behind and an even greater challenge to catch up. When a question arises, seek the support and assistance of the instructor. Critical Thinker Learning requires a process in which the online learner will make decisions about their own learning and experiences. The learner will need to analyze and evaluate the subject matter, raise questions, think open-mindedly and figure out solutions to complex problems. Proactive Successful online learners take responsibility for their own learning. In fact, the successful online learner takes control of a situation and asks questions before it s too late. Computer Literate and Unlimited Computer and Internet Access The online learner will need basic knowledge of computers and internet skills in order to be successful in an online course. This will require on-going access to a laptop/computer, an internet connection and an up-to-date web browser. 11

English as a Second Language (ESL) Program Duration: 9 a.m. 12 p.m. (Monday Thursday) 15 instructional days Elementary Program Goal: Students will increase their English proficiency with regular classroom practice and related activities. Program Description: The summer ESL elementary program will extend the language instruction that students received during the school year. Students will continue to learn about American culture and traditions as they expand their everyday vocabulary and interact with other non-native English speakers. All four communicative domains reading, writing, speaking, and listening are emphasized in daily activities designed to challenge and encourage young English language learners. Target Grade Level(s): Three classes: grades K 1, 2 3 and 4 5 Student Identification Criteria: These classes are intended for students who were at English Language Proficiency levels 1 or 2 for the preceding school year. Those at levels 3 or above should be placed into the regular (non-esl) summer program with support from ESL teachers provided to regular summer program teachers. Secondary Program Goal: Students will increase their knowledge of post-secondary options with targeted emphasis on college and career readiness pathways. Program Description: This secondary summer program experience is designed to assist English Language Learners in exploring the college and career pathways available to them after graduation. Students will learn about coursework and extra-curricular activities that can help them prepare for post-secondary study. Additionally, the students will be made aware of the financial aid and the college admissions processes. Students will also be exposed to career opportunities that may be available to them after graduation with an emphasis on coursework pathways to prepare them for entry into the workforce. The program is designed to highlight college and career readiness t o meet the explicit needs of English Language Learners. Target Grade Level(s): One class: grades 7 10 Student Identification Criteria: These classes are intended for students who were at English Language Proficiency levels 2.5 or higher for the preceding school year. 12

Multicultural Enrichment Program Duration: 9 a.m. 12 p.m. (Monday Thursday) 15 instructional days Summer Book Club Program Goal: A summer reading enrichment program to help broaden students appreciation for books and reading that are of fiction and nonfiction texts. Program Description: Students will engage in hands on activities to make connections between books, celebrating books through various means. They will discuss book content to discover what they already know. Critical reading strategies will be reinforced through lessons and activities. Other study skill strategies will be introduced to students. Target Grade Level: Grade 8 Student Identification Criteria: This program will target students who are on or above grade level and those who are members of underrepresented minority populations. Classroom teachers and Multicultural Achievement Liaisons (MALs) will assist with the identification of students who are on grade-level. Program Duration (#week/days): 15 instructional days 13

Extended School Year (ESY) Services ESY services consist of special education and related services provided: beyond the normal school year or after school; according the child s IEP and as determined by the IEP team; at no cost to the parent; according to state regulations. ESY is not a separate planning process since it is part of the IEP process. An IEP meeting must be held to determine if a student meets criteria for ESY services. The meeting must be conducted like any other IEP meeting with appropriate prior notice. Factors to be considered when determining the need for ESY services: regression/recoupment; degrees of progress; emerging skills/breakthrough opportunities; interfering behaviors; the nature and/or severity of the disability; special circumstances or other factors. What Are Not Extended School Year Services? Because ESY services are uniquely designed to provide FAPE to students with disabilities, it is necessary to emphasize that these services are: not based on the category of the student s disability services must be based on the student s unique educational needs; not mandated twelve-month services for all students with disabilities; not a child care service; not necessarily a continuation of the total IEP provided to a student with a disability during the regular school year; not required to be provided all day, every day, or each day; not an automatic program provision from year to year; not summer school, compensatory services, or enrichment programs; not required to be provided in a traditional classroom setting; and not a service to be provided to maximize each student s potential. 14

GENERAL INFORMATION This guide provides teachers, staff and administrators with specific information about available summer programs. Staff should review this publication to determine which programs may be appropriate for students. When selecting a program, it is important to remember that all programs offered in the Williamsburg-James City Public Schools are available on a non-discriminatory basis. Staff should note that offering these programs is dependent on the following factors: sufficient enrollment availability of qualified and appropriately endorsed instructional staff availability of funding availability of equipment and space at a particular school ATTENDANCE Regular attendance at the summer program is very important because of the fast pace and high concentration of daily work. In order for the students to make sufficient progress, students are expected to be in attendance each day. Students with absences of two (2) or more will be dismissed from the Summer Program. K-8 The lack of academic progress for students experiencing many absences and /or tardies will be reflected through teacher s use of goal attainment check list Each day's work is the equivalent of a week's work in the regular term. A student who misses more than two days for 1.0 unit courses, excused or unexcused, will not receive credit. Each tardy to school will count as ½ of an absence. CONDUCT Any student whose behavior is disruptive and interferes with classroom instruction will be dismissed by the summer program principal. The WJCC Code of Student Conduct (available on the WJCC website) outlines the expectations for student behavior. Students will be subject to suspension or dismissal from classes if they violate policies with regard to student conduct. DRESS CODE Adherence to the School Board Code of Dress shall also be maintained: "All students are expected to wear dress appropriate to the occasion; extreme or ostentatious apparel or appearance is to be avoided. Any article of clothing or accessory which advertises alcohol or an illegal substance, depicts lewd graphics, displays offensive or obscene language, or is gang-related is forbidden." TRANSPORTATION Transportation is provided for K-8 (general education) students, ESL students and pre-k 12 special education students. General Education high school students will use personal or public transportation. 15
