3 What is Hazardous Communication? OSHA s hazard communication standard is in place to ensure that information on chemical hazards in the workplace and associated protective measures are communicated to all staff. How? Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) or Safety Data Sheets (SDS) Labels Training

6 What is a hazardous material? Listed hazardous material (RCRA) Has the following traits Flammable Corrosive Reactive Toxic

7 What is a Hazardous Material? Flammable Substance that can catch fire or burn Can be liquid, solid or gas Examples: Alcohol, paint thinner, gasoline Corrosive Can cause injury to the skin, eyes and respiratory system. Two types: Acid or base Examples Cleaners, Sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid

8 What is a Hazardous Material? Toxics Can be poisonous to the body s organs. Examples Pesticides, garden chemicals Reactive substance that can react violently when mixed with other materials. Can release toxic or flammable gases, create a fire or explode. Examples Peroxides, sodium metal, fireworks

11 How do you use an SDS sheet Be familiar with the format Know where SDS s are stored Review SDS sheets of the chemicals you frequently use. What are some examples? Numbering system is opposite then NFPA

12 SDS sheets contain 1.Identification of the substance or mixture and of the supplier 2.Hazards identification 3.Composition/information on ingredients 4.First-aid measures 5.Fire-fighting measures 6.Accidental release measures 7.Handling and storage 8.Exposure controls/personal protection. 9.Physical and chemical properties 10.Stability and reactivity 11.Toxicological information 12.Ecological information (non-mandatory) 13.Disposal considerations (non-mandatory) 14.Transport information (non-mandatory) 15.Regulatory information (non-mandatory) 16.Other information, including date of preparation or last revision

13 SDS Exercise Scenarios Work as a team to come up with an answer Assign each group member a task Write down answer and section it was found.

14 Scenario 1 New soap has been purchased for Ewaste to remove lead dust. 1. Employee gets soap in their eye what do you do? 2. Soap is stored by something hot. Will it ignite and how would you put out the fire 3. What is the active ingredient? Is the PH below 2? 4. Where should this be stored? 5. what do you do in case of a spill? 6. What do you do if the soap is swallowed and what side effects could occur

15 Scenario 2 Gasoline is something that all of us use on a daily basis. It is also one of the most hazardous substances the average person comes into contact with. 1. Describe appearance and odor. 2. What is the flash point and how do you extinguish a fire? 3. What do you do if gasoline gets in your eyes? 4. What is the DOT class number and label? 5. Is this material reactive and what conditions should you avoid? 6. What do you do if gasoline gets on your skin?

17 Updating Responsibilities Must keep on file for 30 years Why? So we can show what people were exposed to Must have updated msds on file at all times Facility supervisors and scale attendants/administrative assistant will work together. MSDS sheets must be added to book and master as the material comes in.

24 Labeling OSHA is maintaining the approach used in the current HCS that allows employers to use workplace-specific labeling systems as long as they provide the required information However, such workplace label systems may need to be updated to make sure the information is consistent with the new classifications

28 Physical and Health Hazards of Chemicals Inhalation Properly ventilate the area. Use appropriate respiratory protection when needed. Ingestion Wash hands and face often during the work day. Eat in an area away from chemical storage and use. Label containers so that no one drinks or touches an unknown substance. Injection Wear appropriate PPE Avoid contact Use engineering controls Absorption Use barrier creams or PPE Wash regularly Eye protection

Evaluating the relative danger of the situation Identifying what is spilled How much has spilled Taking corrective action in accordance with his or her evaluation. Notifying appropriate personnel.

34 How do you determine if an emergency is occurring? Materials are visibly reacting, creating vapors, fumes or clouds of gas. Fire/Explosions Tipped drums with liquid coming out Panic People not action right.
