2 Setup Guide The SmaX Head End Server (HES) is a rack-mount server PC capable of controlling and integrating multiple SmaX ISC units across a network. A HES will be necessary for sites running a large number of readers. Once configured, the HES functions as a master ISC allowing you to control the functions of many ISCs using the same familliar interface. To configure the SmaX HES for network access. Record your Computer s current IP address and Subnet settings before continuing. Disable any additional network adaptors (including wireless) that use the same Subnet as the connection you will be using to connect to the SmaX HES. You can access the menu shown by clicking: Start > Settings > Network Connections. Right click on any additional network adapters and select Disable. 2 1

Select Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) from the list of items. Properties. Adjust your settings. OK. Connect the SmaX HES to your computer using a crossover type network cable. Open the SmaX web application by opening your web browser (BQT recommends Firefox) and typing the IP address of the SmaX HES ( ) into the browser s search bar. 6. Go

4 Initial Setup Log-in to SmaX. The default Log-in is: username: admin password: smax The password should be changed at the earliest convenience. Refer to the Operators section of the SmaX Software Manual. the Settings icon. 10. Wait 30 seconds before switching off the SmaX HES. 17. Remove the Crossover Cable from the SmaX HES 18. Connect the HES to your network using a straight ethernet cable. 19. Switch on the SmaX HES. 20. You may now log back in to SmaX using the address that you set at step 1 3

5 Controlling Multiple ISCs ISC Shutdown Sometimes an ISC will be powered down in order to move it from one location to another, such as from a test bench to a server room. To Shut Down an ISC: Go to Settings > Maintenance > Shutdown. Once the Status and Poll lights have gone out, remove the Power Cable. To re-start the ISC, reconnect the Power Cable. To install multiple ISCs with the Head End Server Connect an ISC to the network. Refer to SmaX QuickStart Guide for further information. Bring up the Login Page by typing the IP address of the newly added ISC into the address bar of your browser. Note that this is different to the address that you specified for the HES. The default IP address of the SmaX ISC is Change it using the Network Settings page to X where X is not the same as the HES, another ISC, or any other installed device. Update IP Changes. Within settings, open the Database tab. Select an ISC number greater than 0 (0 is reserved for the HES) and different to any installed ISC. In the Database Host box, type the IP address of the HES. Update. Log out using the Logout button in the top right of screen. Repeat Steps 1-7 for each additional ISC. When the last ISC has been added, Log-In using the IP address of the HES to start controlling SmaX. Bookmark the address of the HES as your default link to SmaX. To install multiple ISCs with the Head End Server When adding a Device (e.g a Reader) in the SmaX interface, choose the ISC number of the ISC to which that Device is connected. Do not assign the device to the HES (ISC 0) or to another ISC. 4
