4 APT326 Getting Started Guide

Introduction This guide provides a quick introduction to the APT300 PC-Software, controlling the APT 326 Amplitude Phase Transmitter. The most important commands, and the sequence they should be activated and used in, are described. Starting the program After installation, the program can be started either by picking the icon shown in fig. 1, which should be present on the desktop. If you, for some reason, can t find this icon, open the Start Programs APT300 folder and select APT300 Software. Fig. 1. Desktop icon for APT300 Software The Initial Screen When the program is activated, the view shown in fig. 2 is displayed on screen. Fig. 2. Initial screen, showing Main menu and Main screen, with polar diagram. 5

The Main Command Menu is located to the left on the screen; represented by the boxes (starting from top) Rotor setup, Initial run, Trial run 1, Trial run 2 etc. During normal use, you will activate the commands in this order, while balancing a new machine. The first time the program is started, though, you must first setup some other parameters: Initial setup Pick the button Program setup, located in the lower left corner of the screen, to enter some important parameters. Fig. 3. Program setup button. When the command is activated, the screen changes to the view shown in fig. 4. Fig. 4. Program setup menu. 6

There are many options in this menu, allowing you to customize the layout and performance of the program. In this paper, we will only handle the most essential commands. Select the proper communications port The APT326 unit is connected to the PC via the serial communications port (COM-port), or to a USB port, via a USB Serial converter. Normally the program detects the communication port automatically, but if it fails, you may have to specify port ID manually. If a message similar to the one shown in fig. 5 appears on the screen, the auto-detection has failed. Fig.5. Error message In this case, pick the field under Communication port, in the Program setup screen. Pick the down-arrow in the left part of the parameter field, to show a list of available serial-communication ports. Select the proper port, from the list. Fig. 6. Selected Communication port. Specify transducer properties Before performing any measurements, it is essential to enter correct parameters for the transducers that shall be used. To do this, first pick the Transducer properties button. Fig. 7. Transducer properties button. Then the Transducer Properties Form is displayed. Here you must enter parameters specifying: Transducer Unit (which also determines the Transducer Type) Transducer Sensitivity (for both channels) 7

When the command is activated, the form looks like this: Fig. 8. Transducer Properties Form. First pick the down-arrow in the right part of the Unit field. The available units are then listed, as shown in fig. 9. In addition to the units visible in the list, you can scroll down, and find unit thou. Select the proper unit (G in this example, which implicitly specifies that the transducers are Accelerometers). Fig. 9. Unit for transducers. It is important that you select units so that: If the transducers are Accelerometers, Unit may be either m/s2 or G. If the transducers are Velocity Sensors, Unit may be mm/s, m/s or in/s. If the transducers are Displacement Sensors, Unit may be um, mm, mils or thou. Both transducers must be of the same type. For best results, also enter the actual sensitivity for each transducer. Enter the sensitivity for the transducer connected to input marked LEFT in the field VIB1, and the sensitivity for the transducer connected to input RIGHT in the field VIB2. 8

Example: Assume we have an Accelerometer with sensitivity 96.5 mv/g connected to LEFT, and an Accelerometer with sensitivity 95.6 mv/g connected to RIGHT input. The correct settings in the Transducer Properties Form are then the following: Fig. 10. Settings in Transducer Properties Form Then, when correct values have been entered for Unit and Transducer sensitivity, pick the Save button. The values are then stored, and you return to the Program setup menu. Note that: In the Program setup menu, you can find the heading Show vibration, above two fields where you also can enter a value for Unit. Though it may seem reasonable to use same value here, as for Transducer properties, this isn t necessary. This parameter specifies which unit that shall be used when the vibration levels are presented on the screen, during measurements. If the unit is another than the one used for the transducer properties, the program will automatically calculate correct values. Touch screen If you run the APT300 Software on a PC, you probably don t have a touch screen. In this case, make sure that the Touch screen option is Deactivate (1 in fig. 11). Encoder If you use an Angle indicator, or Encoder, you must activate it (2 in fig. 11). You must also specify in which direction it rotates; Clockwise or Anti-Clockwise. 9

Fig. 11. More options in Program setup menu. Make sure that the Encoder is activated (the Activate button pressed, as in fig 12). If the machine rotates clockwise, press the left-arrow button, or if the machine rotates anti-clockwise, press the right-arrow button. See fig 12 for example. If you are unsure about the rotation angle; make a selection, return to the Main menu. Press the F11- key once, then turn the rotor in the normal rotation direction and check that the angle continuously increases. If not, go back to the Program setup menu and change the direction. Fig. 12. Encoder activated, for machine with rotor rotating anti-clockwise. Polar diagram An option that may not be regarded as entirely essential, but useful, is the ability to specify the direction of the polar diagrams, drawn in the Main viewport. To display the Polar diagram direction form, pick the Polar diagram button. 10

Fig. 13. Polar diagram button, in Program setup menu. The polar diagram represents the left- and right balancing planes (or the signals from the transducers connected to the LEFT and RIGHT inputs). You can specify direction, clockwise or anti-clockwise, separate for each diagram. In fig. 14, you can see an example. Fig. 14. Polar diagram direction form, super-imposed over a cut-out from Main viewport. Other options The Options button opens a sub-menu, with commands that also can be regarded as not completely essential, but very useful. Fig. 15. Options button, in Program setup menu. For the average user, it is probably easiest to handle the program if all options in the sub-menu are selected. 11

The green dot implies that the corresponding option is selected, while a grey dot ( ) means that the option is not selected. Step-by-step option means that the program will guide you through the balancing, step by step. When one step is completed, the program will automatically open the menu that shall be used in the next step. With Start- and Stop readings selected, the program will automatically start measuring when correct RPM is reached. Then, when the required number of readings has been performed, it automatically stops measuring, and calculates the remaining un-balance. Polar diagrams have already been discussed. There is no great advantage to not use them during the trial runs, so you may well select this option too. Draw circle ISO makes the program draw a grey-green circle, inside the polar diagrams, representing the allowed maximum vibration according to the selected Quality grade. The area outside the grey-green circle is coloured red, implying that the vibration is too high. See example in fig. 17. Total vibration controls filtering of vibrations at other frequencies than the balancing frequency. If you select this option, the total vibration level is measured, and no filtering is performed, for values presented in the Total RMS window. Fig. 16. Options sub-menu, all options selected. Quality grade The green, or on most screens rather grey-green circle, at the centre of the polar diagrams represents the allowed un-balance for this machine, under the selected Quality grade. Inside allowed area. Outside. Fig. 17. Polar diagram, with green (grey-green) circle showing tolerance. After specifying these parameters, you can exit the Program setup menu, by picking the command Save &Main (or by pressing the F9 key). If you aren t using an Encoder, the system is now properly setup and ready for use. If you are using an Encoder, it must be calibrated before you start balancing. Fig. 18. Save modifications and return to Main Menu. 12

Calibrating the Encoder This section is only valid if you are using an Encoder. If you re not, continue to section Rotor setup. Before using the Encoder, it must be calibrated. First detect the resolution (number of pulses/turn). To do this, do as follows; 1. In the Main Menu, press the F11-key once. A message approximately like this should then be displayed on the screen: Fig 19. Message during calibration of Encoder. 2. Rotate the rotor a number of turns, in its normal rotation direction. The number in the right part of the field, in fig. 19, will eventually show a value corresponding with the resolution of the Encoder (this value should normally be found on a sticker on the package the Encoder has been delivered in. Some typical values for the most commonly used encoders are 360, 1000 or 4096). 3. When the correct value, corresponding with the resolution of the Encoder is displayed on the screen, press the F11-key again, to store this value. Before using the Encoder, it is also prudent to set the origin for the angle (define the position that shall represent 0º). Simply rotate the rotor to this position, then press the F12-key once. The current angle, reported by the encoder, is then displayed in the RPM field at the top of the Main Screen, when the rotor is not rotating. Note that: When the machine is operating, and the rotor is rotating at a speed close to the balancing speed, the current RPM is displayed in this field. It is only when the rotor is at rest, or rotating very slowly, that the angle is displayed. Fig. 20. Information displayed at top of the Main screen, with Encoder Active. The system is then ready for use. Left: Information displayed while rotor is rotating. Right: Information displayed while rotor is motionless (or rotating very slowly). 13

Balancing The first step, when balancing a machine, is to specify the shape of the rotating part (Rotor) of the machine. This is done in the Rotor setup sub-menu. Open this menu by picking the Rotor setup button. Rotor setup Fig. 21. Rotor setup button. When the sub-menu is opened, a form with some short instructions is displayed on the screen. Read the information, and then, to close the form and continue, click on the symbol: Fig. 22. Continue symbol. The Rotor setup menu is located at the bottom of the screen. Above, the currently selected rotor is displayed, together with some additional parameters. 1. Start by picking the command New rotor, in the menu. New rotor command Fig. 23. Rotor setup menu and the Rotor setup screen. In the upper left part of the screen, the currently selected rotor shape is displayed. There is a library of pre-defined configurations for rotors, which you can scan through, using the Next rotor and Prev. rotor buttons, in the menu. The available configurations are presented in fig

Dimension Fields Fig. 26. Rotor example. 5. Fill in the Rotor name and Rotor Description fields, at the top of the Rotor setup screen. Fig. 27. Rotor name and Rotor description field. 6. Store the completed rotor definition, by picking the Save &Main button. Fig. 28. Save rotor and return to Main Menu. Initial run Before the actual balancing can be performed, the characteristics for the rotor must be determined. This is done during the initial run, without any balancing weight mounted, and two trial runs with balancing weights mounted in first the left and then the right balancing plane. The first step is the initial run. 1. Pick the Initial run button, in the Main Menu. 16 Fig. 29. Initial run button.

This command opens the Initial run screen, with the Initial run sub-menu, located at the bottom of the viewport. Above, an image of the selected rotor is displayed, together with some instructions. Fig. 30. Initial run screen. 2. Switch the machine ON; adjust the rotor speed to the preferred balancing speed. The current rotation speed is displayed at the top of the screen, as illustrated in fig. 31. Rotation speed Fig 31. Field showing current rotation speed. 3. When the RPM indication has stabilized, press the Measure button. Fig. 32. Measure button. 4. If the Stop reading Automatic option is activated (see Program setup sub-menu and fig. 16), wait until the reading stops. If not, wait until the vibration and phase readings are steady and press Stop button. 5. Stop the balancing machine; decrease the rotation speed to zero. 6. The Initial run is then completed. Press the Exit &Main (to the right of Measure button), to return to the Main Menu and store the results. 17

Trial run 1 1. If the Step-by-step Automatic option is activated (see Program setup sub-menu and fig. 16), the program will automatically open the Trial Run 1 screen. If not, press the Trial Run 1 button, in the Main Menu. 18 Fig. 33. Trial run 1 button. At the bottom of the Trial run 1 screen is the Trial run sub-menu. Above, an image of the rotor and some parameter fields are displayed. Note that the values in the parameter fields are suggestions; you can pick any parameter field and enter a new value. For example, if you think that 2 g is too little, you can pick the corresponding field and enter a new value, for example 3 g instead. Fig. 34. Trial run 1 screen. Parameter fields. To change any of these parameters, pick the corresponding field and enter a new value, from the keyboard. As an example, we use 3 g as trial weight instead of 2 g, in the continuation of the example. Measure button. 2. Mount the specified trial weight in the left plane of the rotor. Note that the position where you place the trial weight will be regarded as position 0º, if Angle is left as it is, like in fig 31 above. If you for some reason want the position where the weight is placed to be, for example, 15º instead, pick the Angle field and enter 15. Start the balancing machine and adjust the speed to the balancing speed. 3. If the Start reading Automatic option is activated (see Program setup sub-menu and fig. 16), the vibration readings will begin, when the rotor reaches the balancing speed. If not, press the Measure button. 4. If the Stop reading Automatic option is activated (see Program setup sub-menu and fig. 16), wait until the readings are stopped. If not, wait until the vibration and phase readings are stable and press Stop button (to the left of Measure button).

5. Stop the balancing machine; decrease the rotation speed to zero. 6. Trial run 1 is then complete. Press the Exit &Main (to the right of Measure button), to store the results and return to the Main Menu. Trial run 2 1. If the Step-by-step Automatic option is activated (see Program setup sub-menu and fig. 16), the program will automatically open the Trial Run 2 screen. If not, press the Trial Run 2 button, in the Main Menu. Fig. 35. Trial run 2 button. At the bottom of the Trial run 2 screen is the Trial run sub-menu, which is identical with the menu for Trial run 1. The rest of the screen is also almost identical with the Trial run 1 screen, with the exception that the instructions below the rotor image are a bit different. Note that a trial weight of 3 g was used in the first run, but the program still suggests 2 g as trial weight to be placed in the right plane. Fig. 36. Trial run 2 screen. 2. Remove the trial weight, placed in the left plane, during the previous trial run. This is important to not forget, because if the trial weight remains in the left plane, the results for the right plane will be faulty, and the machine cannot be balanced. 19

3. Mount the specified trial weight in the right plane of the rotor, then start the balancing machine and adjust the speed to the balancing speed. 4. If the Start reading Automatic option is activated, the vibration readings will begin when the rotor reaches the balancing speed. If not, press the Measure button to start. 5. If the Stop reading Automatic option is activated, wait until the readings are stopped. If not, wait until the vibration and phase readings are stable and press Stop button (to the left of Measure button). 6. Stop the balancing machine; decrease the rotation speed to zero. 7. The Trial runs are now completed, and the actual balancing can begin. Press the Exit &Main (to the right of Measure button), to store the results and return to the Main Menu. The balancing run(s) After the Trial runs, the program has analyzed the un-balance in the machine. At the top of the Main screen, suggestions for balancing weights and angles in the left- and right plane are presented. Vibrations larger than allowed, in both planes Recommended balancing weight and angle for RIGHT plane and for LEFT plane Fig. 37. Main screen immediately after Trial run Remove the trial weight from the RIGHT balancing plane. This is important; otherwise, the results from the balancing run will be incorrect. 2. For best results, add weights in the left- and right balancing planes, as close as physically possible, to the angle indications on the screen, as shown in fig. 37. Start the machine and adjust the RPM to the balancing speed. 3. If the Start reading Automatic option is activated, the vibration readings will begin when the rotor reaches the balancing speed. If not, press the Measure button to start. 20

4. If the Stop reading Automatic option is activated, wait until the readings are stopped. If not, wait until the vibration and phase readings are stable and press Stop button (to the left of Measure button). 5. Stop the machine; decrease the rotation speed to zero. The main screen is then updated, with new recommendations. If the vibrations measured are within the limits for the selected quality grade for a plane, the text OK, in green, is written close to the corresponding polar diagram. An example of how the results from a successful balancing run may look can be seen in fig. 35. This is assuming that Draw circle ISO has been selected (See see Program setup sub-menu and fig ). 6. Repeat steps 2 5 above, until the rotor is properly balanced, according to the specified tolerance. In this case, vibrations in both planes are within limits. This is acknowledged with a green Ok for each plane. Inside the polar diagrams, the green area represents the allowed vibration under the selected Quality grade. If any vibration level had been in the red area, more balancing had been required. Fig. 38. Balancing results. 21

Other features In this section follows a short description of some features that simplifies the use of the program. Changing language By default, the language is set to English, at startup. You may change language, using the command Set language, in the Program setup sub-menu. Fig. 39. Set language button. When you press the Set language button, the following form is displayed: Scroll down, to see more languages. Other available languages are: Magyar Romanian Soumi Svenska Fig. 40. Language selection form. Select preferred language, and then press Save button. Note that the program needs to be restarted after changing language, so it will automatically exit when you press Save. 22
