2 The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 H.R.6 DEFINITIONS Conventional biofuel is ethanol derived from corn starch. Achieve a 20% greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction compared to baseline lifecycle GHG emissions. Advanced biofuels is derived from renewable biomass, and achieves a 50% GHG emissions reduction requirement. Cellulosic biofuels is renewable fuel derived from any cellulose, hemicellulose, or lignin, that is derived from renewable biomass, and achieves a 60% GHG emission reduction requirement. PRE0065 2

5 What s a RIN? (Renewable Identification Number) A RIN is a 38-digit alpha, numerical series that is designed to catalog each gallon of renewable fuel produced Details such as the type of renewable fuel, producer, plant origin and even the batch it was produced in The RIN to be handed off when the product is sold The RIN is meant to show that an obligated party a refiner, blender and importer, as defined by the Energy Law is meeting their Renewable Volume Obligation (RVO) under the RFS.
