2 A few headlines Consistent pattern of above half of all 6 th form students achieving A*- B at A Level. Boys and girls achieving equally well. 73% of students going to university 2% reapplying this year, 21% going into employment, training or apprenticeships. 4 What is 6 th Form like? Transitional period from GCSEs to university/employment. More freedom: no uniform (but six Dress Smartly days) study periods home study in Year13 more selfdiscipline and responsibility for learning. Full time students studying for 8 hours a day three demanding subjects in Year12 part-time employment?? Regular attendance and keen punctuality are essential. Parents/carers are supporting your education, so we share any concerns discreetly and negotiate solutions. Bursaries to aid study.

5 We aim to develop the individual as a whole and nurture soft skills : Team building events; Young Enterprise (who are outside ready to sell to you!); World Challenge; Work Experience; Helping out in primary schools; Be part of National Citizenship Scheme (NCS) or a Sports Leader; Enjoy team sports and working out in the new sports centre; 6 th Form Old School Sports Day for charity; Charity week and the famous Rock n Roll concert; Music events; Nuffield Science Awards and Olympiad; The Duke of Edinburgh scheme; English Speaking Board Competition; Senior Student in Y12 help departments and lower school students; House Captain; Prefect in Y13.

7 The Curriculum

8 PROGRAMME OF STUDY You will take three subjects in Year 12 and carry them on to Year 13 make the right choices NOW; You will have considerable study Entry to the 6 th time our expectation is that you will become autonomous and Form intellectually curious students who use non-contact time to secure and deepen your learning supported by the school and teaching departments, of course; Exams at end of two year courses keeping on top of a lot of content time management purposeful, ongoing revision but also chance to experiment, to fail, to reflect and gradually develop into outstanding A level students you will be marathon runners, rather than sprinters.

14 Year 12 entry Examination results at GCSE which confirm an adequate base level: generally at least 5 GCSEs at grade C (or grade 5 in subjects with the new grading system) or above, including English Language and Mathematics and an average point score of 46, based on the applicant s best 8 subject grades; Example of a point score calculation 3 x A*= x A = x B = 92 3 x C = 120, but ignored because they are not part of the student s best 8 grades Total: =422 8 = 53 average GCSE point score

15 Reasons for entry requirements Level of difficulty A programme of three A Levels is hard work. The jump from GCSE in some subjects is especially challenging so the entry requirements reflect this and guide students. Fewer subjects, but they are challenging Students with a point score below 46 points are likely to struggle with the academic demands of A level;

17 GCSE - 40 to 44 (mainly C/B grades)

18 GCSE 44 to 49 (mainly A/B grades)

19 GCSE greater than 49 (mainly A*/A grades

21 Facilitating Subjects Dr Wendy Piatt, Director General of the Russell Group, said: Our consistent advice is that taking two facilitating subjects will keep a wide range of degree courses and career options open to you. This is because these are the subjects most commonly required by our universities and hundreds of courses require one or more facilitating subjects.

23 How do I choose? You should consider: What you are good at; What you enjoy; What you need for your career goals; If you need any advice, ask tonight and then discuss with your PSHE teachers or form tutors in class in the coming months.

26 Applying All students must use the common application system hosted by Usernames and passwords will be issued to you at school via form tutors/pshe lessons. All applications must be made by 31 st March Choose 3 A Levels in order of preference plus a reserve we will try and meet your request. Be realistic in your choices: do what you love and what you are good at.

27 RMGS students who meet all our entry requirements will be guaranteed a place, but you must still apply using the UcasProgress. If you are an RMGS student wishing to apply elsewhere or are not sure if you will meet our entry requirements, use to apply to other schools and colleges. Check deadlines: some are December Approach directly if you have queries. If you are new to RMGS apply using AND check-in with a member of the Leadership Team in THE LIBRARY tonight to discuss your application and our entry requirements.

28 Deadlines RMGS students: over 90% of you stay on so we will need your paper options forms in by in by 9 th February 2017 so we can start constructing the timetable around your choices. This will take place in registration. New students: please submit applications via UcasProgress by 31 st March Applications from external candidates made after 31 st March 2017 will be considered, but we will begin allocating places Year 12 tends to fill up very quickly.
