1 READING Standard 1: Understanding and Using Literary Texts K1 The student will begin to read and comprehend a variety of literary texts in print and non-print formats. K1.1 summarize the main idea and details from texts read aloud K1.2 use pictures and words to make predictions K1.3 understand that a narrator tells a story K1.4 find examples of sound devices in texts read aloud (rhyming, onomatopoeia, alliteration, etc.) K1.5 retell a story with a beginning, middle and end using relevant details K1.6 identify the characters and setting in a story and relate the important events in sequential order K1.7 respond to literary text through a variety of methods K1.8 recall the characteristics of a fantasy K1.9 explain the cause of an event in stories read aloud K1.10 read independently for pleasure K1.11 demonstrate concepts about print K1.12 relate real-life experiences to the text

2 READING Standard 2: Understanding and Using Informational Texts K2 The student will begin to read and comprehend a variety of informational texts in print and non-print formats. K2.1 listen for information and understanding K2.2 summarize main idea and details from informational texts read aloud K2.3 demonstrate inferential comprehension by answering questions K2.4 find facts in texts read aloud K2.5 respond to informational texts through a variety of methods for example drawings and discussions K2.6 understand that headings and print style provide information to the reader (italics, bold, larger type, side bars, etc.) K2.7 understand graphic organizers K2.8 recognize table of contents K2.9 explain the cause of an event described in a text read aloud K2.10 read independently to gain information

Oral language and vocabulary development K3.1 use picture and context to construct the meaning of unfamiliar words in texts read aloud K3.2 create a different form of a familiar word by adding an s or -ing ending K3.3 use vocabulary from a variety of resources (conversations, texts read aloud and the media) K3.4 recognize high-frequency words K3.5 understand that small words can make compound words Fluency K3.6 use oral rhymes, poems and songs to build fluency K3.7 use appropriate voice level when speaking K3.8 read fluently with correct pace, phrasing, punctuation awareness, smoothness and expression Phonemic awareness K3.9 initial phoneme isolation K3.10 use beginning and ending sounds to generate words orally K3.11 recognize rhymes K3.12 create rhyming words in response to an oral prompt K3.13 create words by orally adding, deleting or changing sounds K3.14 use blending to generate words orally
