1 AUDITION INFORMATION FOR Saline Area Players Roald Dahl s Willy Wonka PERFORMANCE DATES: April at Saline High School TECH. MOVE- IN DATES: April 13 DRESS REHEARSAL WEEK: April AUDITION DATES: (Sun) Jan 27, 2:30-6:30 (KIDS ONLY), age 7 years old through high school. Saline Middle School, 7190 N. Maple Rd., Saline (Mon) Jan. 28 7:00 pm OR (Tues) Jan 29 7:00 P.M. At Saline Middle School, 7190 N. Maple Rd., Saline CALLBACKS: (Thur.) Jan 31 7:00 P.M. at Liberty Aud., 7265 N. Ann Arbor St., Saline AUDITION FORMAT: These will be open auditions, meaning all auditioning will be able to watch others try out. Those auditioning will be asked to fill out an audition form and conflict calendar and will be given a number and have their picture taken before the session begins. Auditioners will be asked to do cold readings from the script. Each adult who auditions will be asked to sing 16 bars of a musical theater type song. Kids will be asked to prepare a section of The Candy Man click here for link. (Kids may also sing happy birthday if they desire). TIME COMMITMENT: If cast, featured roles should be prepared to rehearse three to four evenings per week, typically, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and some Friday evenings from 6:30-9:30 P.M. The kids with the 5 main roles will be kept no longer than 9:00 pm. The other children cast will be able to leave by 8:30. During show week, all will be expected to be there until 9:30. The majority of rehearsals will take place in the Saline Middle School Auditorium. A very specific schedule will be created (based as much as possible on actor conflicts!) that will indicate what days you will be needed. You will be expected to attend all designated rehearsals unless you have indicated your unavailability in advance. Please be sure to bring a calendar or list of all dates and specific times you will be unavailable for rehearsals between Feb 11 and April 21! You can also download an audition form from the website soon. ABOUT THE PLAY: Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka is a musical play that combines elements of both Roald Dahl's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and of the 1971 movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory with newly created material. PLOT SYNOPSIS: Roald Dahl's timeless story of the world-famous candy man and his quest to find an heir comes to life in this stage adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate
2 Factory, with a flexible cast size, a tour-de-force role for the title character, songs from the film classic and some clever new additions. Songs include: Pure Imagination; Golden Age of Chocolate; The Candy Man; I Eat More; Think Positive; I See It All On TV; Cheer Up, Charlie; (I've Got a) Golden Ticket; At The Gates; In This Room Here; Oompa-Loompa-Doompadee-Doo; There's No Knowing; Chew It; I Want It Now!; Finale; and more! CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS: Willy Wonka - adult male; high energy. Sings, dances. Is the central character. Must be able to move well. An enigmatic character; at once mysterious and mischievous but also charismatic. The actor should be able to be funny and serious and change between the two on a dime. Charlie Bucket tween/teen. The emotional heart and soul of the musical must be able to show a range of emotions. The actor performing Charlie should have lots of pluck and enthusiasm. Charlie is in nearly every scene. Candy Man - adult male. Must be able to sing. Phineous Trout - adult or older teenage male - does not sing. Grandpa Joe - the grandfather we all wish we had when we were Charlie's age. He is caring, patient, sweet and always reminds Charlie to remain cheerful. This is a sizable role. Must be able to sing and move well Mr. and Mrs. Bucket - adults. Charlie's parents - both sing. On stage in the beginning and the end of the show. Not a lot of physical movement. Grandmas - Josephine and Georgina - adult women; Must be able to sing. On in the beginning and end of the musical. Not a lot of movement. Grandpa George - adult male. Must be able to sing. On in the beginning and end of the musical. Not a lot of movement. James, Matilda, Sophie, Danny, Alfie Billie - tweens/teens - (9-15) male and female. Must be able to sing and move. Augustus Gloop - tween/teen - male, Must be able to sing. Sizable role - on in both acts. Addicted to sweets. Kind of a couch potato Mrs. Gloop - adult woman - must be able to sing. Augustus' mother.
3 Veruca Salt- tween/teen female. Must be able to sing. Redneck brat. Loud Mr. Salt - adult male. Must be able to sing. Veruca's father Mike Teavee - tween/teen male. Must be able to sing. Hyper, addicted to anything electronic. Ms. Teavee- adult female. Must be able to sing. Mike's mother Violet Beauregarde - tween/teen female. Must be able to sing. Snotty, rich kid. Mrs. Beauregarde - adult female. Must be able to sing. Violet's mother. Oompa-Loompas - tween/teen/adult Some roles may be double cast. AUDITION WORKSHOP FOR KIDS January :00 pm Liberty School Auditorium 7265 N. Ann Arbor St., Saline Open for kids ages 7 through high school. At the workshop, you will be taught a short section of The Candy Man that you will be asked to sing at the audition. You will learn more about the show, participate in some improvisational games, and be given tips about how to audition. If you ve never auditioned or auditioned many times, this is a valuable opportunity to meet the directors and prepare for auditions.
