1. WHAT IS LOGICA BEGHELLI? Logica Beghelli is a centralised digital system that allows a set up of a lighting system that includes emergency luminaires. All the luminaires present in the installation, either emergency luminaires or standard lighting DALI fixtures (International standard according to International Standard protocol IEC60929) should be connected to the Logica Control Unit through a simple nonpolarised and shielded 2-wire bus line. The Logica Control Unit (code 12100) has been designed to communicate with standard lighting DALI fixtures through the standard International protocol DALI (Norm IEC60929), whereas the communication with Logica emergency lighting luminaires is possible through a Beghelli fully owned protocol, whose bus coexists with the same Dali bus, without causing any interference. Any control and switching functions of the installation can be directly managed and controlled by the Central Unit or through a remote PC by using simple control software. All the lighting fixtures connected to the Bus can be controlled either individually, by groups or by broadcasting (all at the same time). As far as emergency is concerned, it allows to conduct manual tests, automatic tests, diagnosis, report log and printing; while, as far as general lighting is concerned, it is possible to conveniently manage the luminance requirements such as on/off mode and timing of the entire installation. It is indeed possible to regulate the lighting intensity of each lighting fixture connected to the bus, to create pre-defined customised lighting scenarios and to carry out different control functions on lighting fixtures: dimming of individual fixtures or group of fixtures, programming of on/off times and lighting adjustments that allow Energy saving by presence sensors. Consequently, the luminance can be automatically controlled by using at the same time the necessary energy for personal need, avoiding waste of energy. The Central Unit incorporates the bus power supply and can automatically manage a complete system comprising up to 128 luminaires. Where use is made of local switches, normally open pushbuttons will have to be used. The more the Central Units, the higher the number of luminaires can be obviously installed in a system (max 128 for Central Unit, each of which with its independent 2-wire bus DALI line) and by connecting the Logica control units together in parallel using a 3-wire bus RS 485 (+Ux, -Ux, COM), it is possible to manage the entire system from a single point using a personal PC and "Logica Visual" management software (code12139) or by using a Logica Supervisor Control Unit (code 12131). If it is not necessary to centralise the management in a single location, it will be possible to connect the RS485 of each single Central Unit to the Logica printer DIN (code 12099) in order to periodically print the report on the installation status. Before an adequate interface, Logica can also be integrated in systems that use LON. 1.1 Logica AutoTest CentralTest Emergency Luminaires LOGICA emergency luminaires are self-powered, i.e. each is fitted internally with its own battery; in the event of a power failure, they will perform their emergency functions autonomously. The luminaire is supplied by a bicolour LED through which there are indicators of its functioning status and potential errors. The Logica luminaires are capable of automatically carrying out periodical functional tests to check if their components (tubes and batteries) work efficiently. Therefore, if used independently from a control unit, they will work like normal self-testing / AutoTest luminaires. If they work as AutoTest luminaires, the function tests will be performed every 28 days and the duration tests every 26 weeks. However, if the luminaires are connected to a control unit, this same control unit will have the task of managing the execution of these tests and recording the results (for the central unit the default timeframe is also 28 days for the function test and 26 weeks for the duration test. The Logica SA luminaires are provided with a lighting sensor that allows the variation of light in the ballast depending on the environment lighting conditions. By combining one or two jumpers, depending on the fixture, placed next to the luminaire connector it is possible to adjust the duration of the battery (1 or 3 hours), the auto-dimming option of the ballast (PS or SA) or interruption of sensor functions. Each luminaire supplied by Beghelli has its own 4-digit (ID) identification code inside the microprocessor that it is also identified on a label affixed to the products reflector. This ID takes on a fundamental role when the luminaire is connected to a Logica Control Unit so that it can easily be distinguished from any other luminaire of the system. Page 2

1.2 Logica Control Unit The Logica Control Unit features a 4-digit keyboard for entering all commands as well as an LCD display enabling the user to view the system status, 4 configurable light switches, and RS485 output for remote connection and DALI-compatible bus output (2-wired) for controlling the entire lighting system. The Logica Control Unit incorporates the bus power supply so that no further power supplies need to be connected to the DALI bus. A Control Unit can autonomously manage a complete system comprising up to 128 luminaires. In the case of mixed systems (standard + emergency lighting), a single control unit can manage no more than 64 normal lighting fixtures, according to the international standard protocol IEC60929, whereas there is no limit to the emergency lighting fixtures, remaining the number around 128. As previously mentioned, all Logica luminaires have a visible identification label containing their ID (four digits) and this also applies to the Beghelli DALI-type ceiling fixtures (6-digit ID). In any case, this system will function perfectly with DALI ceiling fixtures by other manufacturers. The Logica Control Unit will automatically record the number of luminaires making up the system, making the programming of the system to be extremely simple by individually identifying the ID codes of all fixtures connected to the DALI bus. This operation enables the immediate identification of a luminaire to execute normal maintenance operations or to directly intervene upon a specific luminaire in case of potential malfunctions, avoiding any pointless waste of time. As far as emergency lighting luminaires are concerned, the tests (function and duration tests) are carried out automatically (function 30 seconds and duration 1 hour) by the Logica Control Unit, in such a way that it allows to verify the fluorescent tube and the battery status of each luminaire. Whenever necessary, for the test duration it is possible to program whether all luminaires should conduct the test simultaneously or staggered by 7 days from each other. In this case, all luminaires with an odd ID code will perform the tests when the timer expires, while the luminaires with an even ID will perform the same test seven days after, which prevents all fixtures from being discharged at the same time following a normal duration test (discharged batteries). The Logica Control Unit also allows the tests to be manually performed at the user s request and in a controlled duration (30 seconds) or simply to activate the switch-on mode without performing any test (unconditional switch-on). The Logica Control Unit, through a periodic polling of the system devices, records the information of each single luminaire regarding the status and parameters setting (1h-3h, odd-even, emergency ability, network presence, on-going test, auto-central dimmer, PS or S functions, etc.) and the status of potential errors. Whenever necessary the user may easily change the status of each parameter and visualize the potential errors. Apart from the fault warnings that may be present (tube, battery duration battery function, battery recharging, incomplete recharge, etc.), detailed information may be displayed as to the type of luminaire that needs further replacement (ex: 8W, 11W, 24W, HALOGEN and the type of connection T5, 2G7) or the type of battery that has failed (Lead, Nickel-Cadmium, 6V, 7.2V, etc.). Via the Logica Control Unit, when the mains power is off, it is possible to disable and re-enable the emergency function or completely shut down the devices making up the system ( sleep mode) in order to conserve battery power. With the Logica Control Unit it is possible to divide both the emergency and lighting fixtures into groups and carry out the available functions on a single subset of fixtures within the system. Therefore operations can be performed simultaneously on all devices (broadcast commands), on groups of devices or on one device at times, according to the user s needs. As far as general lighting DALI fixtures are concerned, with the Logica Control Unit it is possible to control the luminous flux of several luminaires (dimming), to create pre-defined lighting scenarios. Record these scenarios and to manage the activation of these respective scenarios. The Logica Control Unit has four inputs (switches) that can be programmed. The possible configuration for each input is as follows: 1. On Off Dimmer: it allows switching on/ off and dimming the DALI luminaires manually before one simple pushbutton (NA) connected at the respective input. 2. Sensor: it allows automatically changing between two pre-defined scenarios (typical applications: presence sensor and light scale). 3. Scene: it allows to manually change between two pre-defined scenarios by connecting a simple pushbutton (NA); Page 3

4. Timed scene: it allows to automatically changing between two pre-defined scenes at a fixed schedule and, if necessary, manually switching by means of a pushbutton (NA) (typical application: daytime/ outdoor or night time lighting). The Logica Control Unit can be equipped with a DIN bar printer for printing out 3 reports that to provide the system status: 1. System configuration report: it provides a full list with all ID fixtures, the fixtures type (SE / SA luminaire, Halogen, DALI luminaire, etc), duration (1h - 3h), even / odd numbers and set of groups. 2. Test programming report: it contains information of the expiration of the automatic function tests, duration and its periodicity. 3. Error report: it contains the faults of the fixtures; the report will show the type of faults detected and details and further information of the battery and tube that should be replaced. The access to the several menus of the Logica Control Unit can be protected by means of a personalized 4-digit password. Page 4

1.3 Installation advice for a project using the Logica System Dimensions of the installation As previously mentioned, the Logica Control Unit allows the user to manage either standard lighting DALI luminaires or emergency Logica luminaires (maximum of 128 fixtures, of which 64 DALI). These luminaires should be connected to the same non polarised, non shielded 2-wired BUS, with a power supply from the Control Unit 16Vdc and a maximum current of 250mA. Each luminaire connected to the bus absorbs from the latter a certain current corresponding to the type of fixture, which is as follows: THE SE LUMINAIRES absorb approximately 1.3mA THE HALOGEN absorb approximately 1.3mA THE SA LUMINAIRES absorb approximately 1.8mA THE DALI BALLASTS absorb approximately 2mA THE DALI PUSHBUTTONS AND SENSORS absorb approximately 5mA In a bus connection, conductors having the same technical characteristics as those used to supply power to the luminaires can be used (ex: N07V-K, N1VVK, etc.) so that all wiring can be laid inside the same ducts. Regarding the conductor s cross-section, it is pertinent to consider the maximum distance between the control unit and the farthest luminaire. For a better reference, please note the following table: Cross-section Cable length for DALI fixtures Cable length for DALI fixtures 0.5 mm2 100m 150m 1.0 mm2 200m 300m 1.5 mm2 300m 500m In any case, even if it is not extremely necessary, it is advisable to always use a cable with minimum cross-section of 1.5 mm2. NOTE: NOT all DALI accessories that are available in the market (sensors and pushbuttons) can be connected to the DALI bus; it is crucial to evaluate each case or to purchase directly those provided by Beghelli S.p.A. During installation of a Logica-type system, it is recommended to mark down the factory identification code (ID) on the layout drawing so that the lighting fixture can be precisely and quickly identified, avoiding therefore a costly waste of time. If no building layout drawing is available, a table can be drawn up, which shows the identification code of each luminaire with a description alongside it, indicating the luminaires position within the building and the electric panel where the Logica Control Unit has been installed. For example: N Type ID Position Power distribution panel 1 Logica AT-CT 24W SE 1-3p A236 First floor, right side of corridor A1 128 Logica AT-CT 8W SA 1-3p DC74 Fifth floor, above the stairway A3 The Logica system luminaires can be directly installed on the bus without any particular preliminary programming. Upon installation, even if managed independently from the Control Unit, the luminaires are capable of carrying out their emergency functions autonomously, working like normal self-testing (AutoTest) luminaires. Page 5

1.3.2 Luminaires installation In order to install a luminaire, it is important to mount first the suitable bracket connecting the power cables to the endconnectors (Phase and Neutral) and two bus wires. It is pertinent to continue the connections in parallel in the connecting box, as well as directly in the luminaires end-connectors, especially if they are used by a cable of the larger cross-sections. For the bus wires, it is recommendable to use cables with different colours of those used in the power distribution panel and to keep the same different colours throughout the entire system installation. All the luminaires should be correctly fixed and to its full extent to their own bracket (clicking the lateral hook ), in such a careful way that the label with the ID code is always kept visible. The power supply and the correct functioning status of each lamp should be checked, controlling that the LED on the reflector be on and blinking. This signalling indicates that the lamp is fed and the battery is charging Verifying that the installation is correct A first control should be done to verify the continuity of the DALI bus by measuring the voltage of the two wires of the DALI bus in the Control Unit output (around 16Vdc) and to gradually verify that the approximate voltage value is present in the luminaires end-connectors. Once the bus continuity is verified and after fixing all the luminaires to their respective supporting structures, through the Control Unit it will be possible to detect all the ID codes (for the programming phase, please refer to the Control Unit manual) present in the installation system. Once this procedure is ended, it is crucial to verify that the number of fixtures detected by the system coincides with the number of those installed; in a different situation it will be necessary to search which ID codes were not individualized How to solve potential issues In case in which after the CONFIGURATION of all DALI or LOGICA luminaires ID codes are not recognised by the Control Unit, the following should be done to identify the missing luminaires: Page 6

Compare the ID list of the installed luminaires and the list in the Control Unit; by excluding the matching ones, it will be possible to recognise the missing luminaries. If the luminaires battery is already at a good level of charge, it will be possible to send a broadcast command of unconditioned on-function (in the Manual Test Menu) and to control the luminaires that are still switched off. Probably these luminaires are the ones that were not recognised by the Control Unit and to which the Control Unit was not able to send any signals. Once the missing luminaires have been recognised, it is pertinent to understand the reason for the absence of communication between the former and the Control Unit. The causes can be as follows: 1. THE BUS IS NOT PRESENT IN THE FITTING: verify that the luminaire s end-connectors voltage is around 16Vdc. If there is no voltage, it is possible to be before a short-circuit bus or an open bus. If there is a short circuit in the bus, the Control Unit will not recognise ay present luminaires; if the bus is open in the interruption point, the Control Unit will identity certain fixtures which will help to recognise the bus interruption point. 2. THE CONNECTOR PRESENT IN THE BRACKET FOR A FAST CONNECTION DOES NOT MAKE CORRECT CONTACT WITH THE CIRCUIT: in this situation the bus is present in the bracket, but it does not arrive correctly to the circuit. In this specific case, the luminaire LED can even blink correctly, because voltage is provided, but if it is not correctly mounted in the ceiling, the bus will not be able to communicate. It is enough to verify that the bracket be fully inserted (please be aware that lateral hook is clicked). 3. THE 230V HAS BEEN APPLIED TO THE BUS LINE: if the installation wiring has not been performed with certain precaution and if a (230V) Voltage has been applied to the bus line, some of the emergency luminaires may have been damaged and should be replaced. 4. THE FITTING SOFTWARE IS BLOCKED: as far as electronic devices are concerned, it can happen (very rarely) that a device is blocked in a way that it can no longer communicate or send signals with the external world. In these particular cases, in order to start the software, it is necessary to reset the micro by discharging the luminaire, disconnecting the internal battery and gradually charging it, as well as fixing the luminaire again. 5. THE DEVICE IS DEFFECTIVE: it can happen (very rarely) that an electronic device has manufacturing defects, however, if this is the case, the device should be replaced. 2. EXAMPLE OF THE APPLICATION OF A LOGICA SYSTEM WITH REMOTE CONTROL We shall now provide a practical example of the application of a Logica system that will serve to highlight all the potentialities of this type of system. Let us consider a number of Logica Control Units controlled from a single remote station via personal computer and Logica Visual software as shown in the diagram below. Each Logica Control Unit is installed on a floor distribution panel and control both standard (DALI) and emergency lighting fixtures. From the diagram we may observe that: a) Every Logica Control Unit has an outgoing non-polarised, non-shielded 2-wire bus to which all emergency and DALI lighting fixtures are connected in parallel (max 128 Logica luminaires or 64 Logica + 64 DALI). b) To the DALI bus it is also possible to connect command pushbuttons, which can be configured so as to permit manual on/off switching and dimming of a group of DALI luminaires connected to the same bus. The advantage of these devices is that they are directly powered by the DALI bus, which simplifies the wiring. c) To the DALI bus it is also possible to connect presence detectors and light sensors, which can be configured so as to permit automatic on/off switching and dimming of the DALI luminaires connected to the same bus. The advantage of these devices is that they are directly powered by the DALI bus, luminaires connected to the same bus, which simplifies the wiring. Page 7

d) The power lines for both the standard and emergency lighting fixtures originate from the area distribution panels. As the system is of the digital type, the same power line can be used both for standard lighting fixtures (DALI) and emergency luminaires, thus simplifying the wiring, though it is always advisable to keep the lines separate. e) In addition to receiving emergency power, SA-type luminaires (maintained) can also receive a mains power line to allow the SA luminaires to be turned on and off using standard switches. If there is no need to switch SA luminaires on and off manually, it will be sufficient to use a single power line (emergency line) and connect the jumper on the connector SA. In the example, all the Control Units are connected in parallel via the RS485 backbone and remotely controlled from a single location using Personal Computer and Logica Visual software. To interface the PC with the RS485 backbone a converter must be used and, depending on system requirements, the user may choose from among the following interface devices: 1. TEMA RS converter, desktop model (it is the same used for the old CentralTest system) (code 3014), or RS DIN rail mounted converter (code 12134). 2. TRP-C08 USB / RS converter provided with bracket for mounting on DIN rail (code 12136). 3. TIBBO Ethernet - RS converter model DS100B provided with bracket for mounting on DIN rail and power supply unit (code 12135). 4. GSM modem interface for DIN rail mounting DIN (code 12132). 5. Analog modem interface. For other configuration and for converter use applications, please refer to "Logica Visual" software. Page 8

3. LOGICA SYSTEM ADVANTAGES The advantages that the Logica system offers are the following: Versatility in the planning of emergency lighting systems: Logica places a variety of system configuration options at the customer s disposal, ranging from a simple AutoTest luminaire to a system made up of thousands of devices controlled form a single station. Versatility of emergency lighting fixtures: the same Logica emergency luminaire can be configured in different ways according to the need (ex: duration 1h-3h, odd even, PS SA function, auto-dimmer central-dimmer). Reliability and Safety: should the DALI bus fail for any reason, the Logica luminaires will nonetheless continue to work (since they are also AutoTest luminaires), thus guaranteeing emergency coverage. Design simplicity: using Logica considerably simplifies wiring requirements, especially as far as DALI lighting fixtures are concerned. Technological innovation: in view of all the functions it offers in terms of both emergency lighting and standard DALI lighting fixtures, the Logica System can be defined, with no doubt, as the most highly advanced system available. Emergency savings: using presence detectors and light sensors will allow automatic dimming of DALI luminaires, which means that no energy will be consumed beyond what is necessary, avoiding any waste of energy.
