By now you have probably realized that we live in a diverse world full of many different cultures. Learning Spanish apart from opening up access to areas of "high" culture such as art, literature, and history, knowledge of Spanish can help learners understand and appreciate day-to-day culture in the Spanish-speaking world. The ability to read and understand authentic Spanish -- whether that be in the newspaper, on television, in magazines, in letters from friends or pen pals, or on the street -- truly gives an "insider" view into the language and all of its different shades of meaning. As most people would probably recognize, the primary purpose of a language is to facilitate communication between people. However, what many people don't realize is that learning a foreign language, although intimidating at times, opens many doors to meeting new and exciting people that wouldn't otherwise be possible. Getting to know somebody by communicating with them in their own language is a great way to really get to know that person on a much deeper level than only through communicating with gestures or body language. In this course we will recognize and apply communicative skills, cultural knowledge, and grammar, which will enable you to expand your understanding of the Spanish language and cultures. This course will also prepare you to be equipped to succeed in a business world that functions through the use of BOTH the English and Spanish language. Throughout this course, I will use communicative, interesting, fun and innovative teaching and hands-on activities. Bienvenido a mi clase! Course Description/Objectives This course (Intensive Spanish Review) is designed for students who have had Spanish 1305 and 2311 and will expand the functional skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, through the study of vocabulary, grammatical structures and syntax, with extensive practice in the classroom. Required Textbook Arriba 5 th Edition, Zayas-Bazán, Bacon Materials you will need the following materials every day for Spanish class: -A notebook -A pencil and a pen. The pen can be any color except red -2, 3 ring binder (from last semester) A Spanish English dictionary is highly recommended Course Competencies - The student will be able to perform on a "novice" to "intermediate" level, as defined by ACTFL and SCANS, which are on file with the Dean. 1
2 ACTFL National Standards in Foreign Language Education Course Objectives: The purpose of this course is formed by Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21 st Century, focusing on the five general areas: Communication Communicate in Languages Other Than English Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics Standard 1.3: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics. Cultures Gain Knowledge and Understanding of Other Cultures Standard 2.1: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the culture studied Standard 2.2: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the culture studied Connections Connect with Other Disciplines and Acquire Information Standard 3.1: Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the foreign language Standard 3.2: Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through the foreign language and its cultures Comparisons Develop Insight into the Nature of Language and Culture Standard 4.1: Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied and their own Standard 4.2: Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own. Communities Participate in Multilingual Communities at Home & Around the World Standard 5.1: Students use the language both within and beyond the school setting Standard 5.2: Students show evidence of becoming life-long learners by using the language for personal enjoyment and enrichment. Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas: basic knowledge of the pronunciation and intonation basic knowledge of the global diversity with emphasis in the Hispanic World basic knowledge of everyday conversation using the basic Spanish grammar in all four skills-reading, writing, speaking and listening. basic knowledge of the usage of vocabulary basic knowledge of composing sentences and paragraphs using basic Spanish grammar 2
3 basic knowledge of close reading of the text Assignments - Assignments are to be prepared before class. Each assignment will be due at the beginning of class unless otherwise stated. Assignments will include readings and textbook exercises (oral and written), and/or other activities designed to stimulate and reinforce foreign language acquisition. Please prepare your assignments carefully and expect to participate actively in class. On average you should study an amount of time equal to that spent in class. Late work. Late work from an excused absence is due the class period after your return to class. Work that is late or missing without excuse will not be accepted and will receive a grade of 0 (zero). Parents of high school students who repeatedly have late or missing work will be notified. Grading Procedure Exams and Compositions... 30% Daily work (homework, blogs, notes organization, listening, vocabulary, Reading and grammar quizzes) % Participation... 10% Oral (exams, dialogues, presentations)... 20% Final exam (oral and written)... 20% **REMEMBER: Spanish is a building subject. Information carries over from one chapter to the next. Do not be surprised if there are questions on a chapter test dealing with previous chapters!!!! You will be tested over Chapters from Arriba book and also over the readings Grading Scale A = B = C = D = * F = 59-below * * C or better is required for continuing to the next level. Attendance Policy - Class attendance is mandatory! You are expected to be on time and to remain the entire class period. If you leave prior to the dismissal of class, you will be counted absent. Three tardies will constitute an absence. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class period. Class Conduct - You should be courteous and respectful to your classmates and me, your instructor, at all times. It is my belief that learning best occurs in a supportive and respectful atmosphere. It is expected that you will conduct yourself in a responsible manner. Rudeness and disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Tardiness, sleeping and visiting with classmates will not be permitted since such activities inhibit the learning atmosphere. Pagers and cell phones are not appropriate in class. Should you carry one of these items, please turn it off upon entering the classroom. Special Notice - If at any time you decide to drop the course, it is your responsibility to do so. Please follow the appropriate procedures. If you are absent four times and have not initiated the 3
4 "drop", you will be dropped by the instructor and expect to receive a grade of "withdrawn failing." Academic Integrity - Cheating and plagiarism constitute serious offenses and will not be tolerated and will be penalized with a zero. In this class, please be aware that utilization of online translation websites constitutes cheating.
