4 IDM Digita faut recorder IDM - technica overview Introduction The IDM digita faut recorder is a distributed muti functiona data acquisition system designed to address the data recording requirements of a modern distribution or transmission substation. When couped with the master station software package, the IDM digita faut recorder provides a powerfu patform for the acquisition, anaysis and reporting of data from power system substations. IDM muti functiona patform An industry standard mutitasking operating system provides added security, high reiabiity and faciitates the muti function nature of the device i.e., digita faut recording, dynamic monitoring, synchronized phasor measurement, power quaity monitoring, event recording and impedance based faut ocation. Each of these functions operates competey independenty of any other function without compromising individua performance. IDM system instaation Individua data acquisition units (DAUs) are networked on a twisted pair or fiber optic ethernet LAN using TCP/IP protoco for communications. Industria PC based oca storage units (LSU) can be added to the LAN to provide mass storage. Windows master stations can aso be added to provide oca anaytica capabiities. Each IDM data acquisition unit is equipped with a powerfu 16-bit processor, a DSP processor, a 16-bit A/D converter and 16Mb of memory. This provides sufficient processing power to carry out data acquisition on a anaog inputs. The DAU computes watts, VArs, sequence components and phasor quantities for up to three ines in rea time. Quantities are cacuated on a cyce-by-cyce basis and vaues are time-tagged to a resoution of 1µs. IDM data acquisition units are avaiabe in three formats: A 3U mode with 10 anaog channes and 16 or 32 events (IDM T1) A 6U mode with 16 anaog channes and 32 events (IDM T3) A 6U mode with 32 anaog channes and 64 events (IDM T5) Faut and event recording The faut recording function records a primary anaog quantities at sampe rates of up to 6.4kHz (7.68kHz on 60Hz systems) and can be triggered at under and/or over eve or at the rate of change of any primary or cacuated quantity. Cacuated quantities incude negative and zero sequence votages and currents, frequency, harmonics, watts and vars. A DAU signa conditioning is interna. Data acquisition units are designed to be instaed in the reay panes associated with the circuits being monitored. The 3U DAU can be used to monitor up to two circuits if a common set of votages is avaiabe. Each DAU can cacuate the neutra current from the phase currents, eiminating the need to dedicate a channe to recording neutra current. An IDM digita faut recorder network can be connected directy to wide area networks or can be accessed directy using industry standard dia-up networking. The architecture of the IDM digita faut recorder and the use of TCP/IP in the communications software enabes direct connection to the internet. DAUs can be synchronized to 1µs using an interna or externa GPS cock. This provides synchronous samping in a DAUs aong with the abiity to make system wide phasor measurements. The LSU, which uses the Linux muti tasking operating system, provides storage for a DFR, TSS and CSS records. It aso provides the communications for the system; e.g. modem, oca or wide area networking, oca printing, etc. Up to 4 DAUs can be connected to an LSU within a sub system. The event recording function within the IDM captures and time-tags a changes of state on the event inputs. This data can be output to a oca printer in a simiar format and on to a conventiona event recorder or transferred as a data fie to the remote master station. Dynamic system monitoring (DME / DSM) The IDM dynamic system monitor is equipped with two dynamic monitoring recording modes: triggered recording (TSS) and continuous recording (CSS). These modes operate at sampe rates of 10/12Hz or 50/60Hz and can be used to meet a the recording requirements for mode vaidation or incident anaysis.

5 SCADA I/O* The SCADA I/O function can be used to eiminate transducers and provide measurement information over a seria connection to an inteigent RTU using the modbus protoco. The triggered recording mode can be used to capture data associated with power system incidents by triggering on excursions of frequency, votage, current or power fow. A comprehensive range of user settabe triggers are possibe. Record ength and pretrigger time are fuy user configurabe and can ast up to 30 minutes in duration. For continuous monitoring of power system quantities (or in the event that user triggers are not configured to capture a specific incident of interest), the continuous recording mode can be used (concurrenty with the triggered recording mode) to capture the required data. When used in this mode, up to 45 days of power system quantities is avaiabe for user anaysis and archiving (note, 30 days minimum). The interna DSP in the IDM can cacuate RMS votage, current and, singe and three phase power (rea and reactive). Automated anaysis of faut records Data from faut records has many appications. However, the extraction of data for appications such as equipment condition or power quaity monitoring can be a time consuming task. The IDM digita faut recorder, with its modern master station software, can automate this task and present the resuting information in a usabe format. In addition, this SCADA port can be used to report the status of a event inputs to the RTU. This RTU port can aso be used to contro secure SBO (seect before operate) reay outputs fitted in the distributed DAUs. * The SCADA I/O feature wi require detaied discussion with users to identify specific requirements. As each record is retrieved by the master station it is automaticay anayzed. The resuting summary parameters are stored in a database tabe. Anaytica functions deveoped using high eve queries are provided for a number of appications incuding protection performance, equipment condition monitoring and power quaity. These functions automaticay process the summary information, compare cacuated quantities against user specified imits and generate reports summarizing the resuts. Aarm messages are used where immediate action is required in response to cacuated resuts. Use of a Microsoft Access database provides open accessibiity to summary parameters and anaysis functions, enabing third party support and enhancement. Portabe IDM digita faut recorders The IDM is avaiabe in portabe formats: 10 anaog and 16 digita channe portabe high resoution digita faut recorder (IDM T4) 16 anaog and 32 digita channe portabe high resoution digita faut recorder. 6 IDM Digita faut recorder IDM - PMU and power quaity functions Synchronized phasor measurement Most transmission substations seected for synchrophasor data coection are aready equipped with digita faut recorders. Utiizing the existing digita faut recorder offers severa advantages to the utiity: Less expensive to upgrade the DFR than to purchase new PMU equipment. Less expensive instaation when existing fied wiring and PT/CT circuits are used. The IDM records three phase votages and currents from the substation PTs and CTs. The data acquisition front end is synchronized to a time reference signa - the one second puse (1 PPS) from an interna GPS cock. From these direct inputs the IDM faut recorder cacuates vaues for positive phase sequence magnitude and phase ange on a cyce-by-cyce basis. These vaues are streamed back to a centra gathering point where the difference between a number of ocations (nodes) on the transmission network can be monitored without any time skew among any channes on any of the acquisition systems. The IDM aso provides precise system wide phase ange measurements to an accuracy of up to 0.1degrees. The power quaity recording feature wi in most cases eiminate the need for a separate substation power quaity recording device. Since the input quantities required for faut recording are identica to those required for power quaity recording, it is a natura evoution to provide these power quaity measurements with a muti function faut recorder. Power quaity measurements avaiabe incude: A oca storage unit (LSU) can be used to concentrate the data streams from a number of IDM faut recorders at the same ocation. Harmonics recording - Compiant to IEC , the harmonic recording is avaiabe on up to 2 threephase groups of anaog channes (ie. 2 groups of votage or 1 group of votage and 1 of current). Up to 40 user seectabe harmonic quantities can be seected for each three-phase group to be recorded at intervas of 1 or 10 mins. Data can be stored for up to 365 days and can be retrieved for anaysis by the master station software. Sags and Swes - Compiant to IEC the power quaity sensor can detect votage sags (dips) and swes. The ast 1000 incidents are retained in memory and can be retrieved for anaysis. Ficker recording - Compiant to IEC ficker is cacuated on a group of three-phase votage inputs. Data is stored in memory for up to 512 days and can be retrieved for anaysis. Power quaity data ogging - Provides the abiity to record cacuated quantities at sampe intervas of 10sec or 10min as we as the maximum and minimum vaues over the sampe interva. Data is stored in memory up to 60 days (at 10s sampe rate) or 365 days (at 10min sampe rate). A of these power quaity functions are provided concurrenty with the other IDM recording functions incuding faut recording, triggered sow scan recording and continuous sow scan recording. Any power quaity incident can trigger a standard faut or transient record. PC
