1 ENVIRONMENTAL Management CASE STUDY Ahold USA From Verisae, Inc. November 2009
2 Executive Summary: Verisae helped Ahold develop an understanding not only of Ahold s direct emissions impact, but also the impact of the supply chain and consumers. Ahold worked with a number of external consultants Arthur D Little, DHV, ERM and Verisae to analyze the information and develop goals and targets in the area of climate action. The carbon inventory showed that the total amount of CO2 emitted annually (our absolute emissions) is 2,475 thousand tonnes. This includes fuel, gas and electricity consumption and emissions of refrigerants leakage. Ahold also included third-party data in the calculations to represent distribution centers, transport and stores. Ahold plans to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% per square meter of sales area by 2015 against the 2008 baseline calculated with the aid of Verisae s consulting services and emissions management software. The consulting engagement and research has also provided the basis for an emissions management program to be shared across the company. For more information: Call us or sales@verisae.com Page 2
3 Ahold USA Establishment of Carbon Emissions Baseline for 2005, 2006, 2007, & 2008 Company Profile Ahold USA is a large grocery retailer in the United States with more than 740 locations. It operates under two main banners, Stop n Shop and Giant Food Stores. It is the United States subsidiary of Ahold, headquartered in Belgium. Ahold is analyzing the emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases of each of the products throughout their lifecycle, in an attempt to understand how different types of products affect the planet. This information is being used to make decisions that will reduce carbon emissions and their impact. Ahold s climate action goals are to: Improve our ecological and environmental footprint by making our operations more efficient; Develop environmentally responsible strategies that improve water conservation and reduce waste; Encourage suppliers and consumers to behave in an environmentally responsible manner. We will reduce our CO2 emissions per square meter of sales area by 20% by 2015 against the 2008 baseline published in this report. Business Challenges Ahold wanted to understand and report on their carbon inventory for 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 with the associated metrics and steps to reduce their emissions across the enterprise. To accomplish this objective, Ahold submitted carbon emissions source data to Verisae for analysis. Verisae calculated Ahold s carbon baseline and established a reporting framework from 3 years of historical emissions data. Verisae completed some professional services and emissions management consulting in order to establish a benchmark for Ahold s emissions as they relate to a select set of related organizations. Solution Approach Verisae configured its Enterprise Emissions Tracking application and worked with another consulting firm, Environmental Resource Management (ERM), to capture data from more than 90,000 utility bills, 65,000 service records and other data sources to complete the inventory for the years of 2005 through This work was accomplished within a three (3) month period of time. Technical Situation The data to calculate a carbon inventory for a multi-site enterprise comes from many different parts of the organization and most of the data exists in spreadsheets, paper-based invoices and bills, and other disparate sources of data. For more information: Call us or sales@verisae.com Page 3
4 Products & Services Verisae s business process and implementation professional services act as the backdrop for the Sustainable Resource Planning (SRP) platform. To make sustainability actionable and to carbon emissions management to life, Ahold is rethinking a number of key operations, internal processing, and are striving for optimization. Verisae provided a number of professional services to help Ahold s key stakeholders orientate their organization to carbon management. Verisae worked to implement Enterprise Emissions Management (EEM), a software as a service product, for Ahold. This carbon inventory and emissions management application was used to calculate Ahold s annual carbon footprint per The Climate Registry General Reporting Protocol specifications. Service Partners Verisae worked side by side with two other consulting firms to accomplish this project, Environmental Resources Management (ERM) and Arthur D. Little. Benefits & Results The carbon inventory showed that the total amount of CO2 emitted annually (our absolute emissions) is 2,475 thousand tonnes. This includes fuel, gas and electricity consumption and emissions of refrigerants leakage. Ahold also included third-party data in the calculations to represent distribution centers, transport and stores. Ahold was able to understand their carbon inventory for each year, the change in that inventory and the reasons why it changed on a per site and per month level. Ahold was able to believe the data and present it to their parent company with a high degree of confidence because of the data model and integrity of the Quality Control process. Ahold was able to accomplish this reporting in a three month time frame and a much lower cost than internally creating and administering this project.
