1 Pretty Petals Pillow By Marie Duncan This fun pillow uses the Circular Attachment, to create the piped petals and features design from HUSQVARNA VIKING embroidery collection 240, Most Popular Quilting Designs. To download the design, go to the HUSQVARNA VIKING website. Click on Be Inspired/Inspiration and Sewing Projects. Choose the project for May and click on View Project. Click on Download Design to access the design. The entire collection, 240 Most Popular Quilting, is available for purchase from your local HUSQVARNA VIKING dealer. Sewing Supplies: Clear Piping Foot Circular Attachment Clear Invisible Zipper Foot Do All Quilter's Hoop 150x INSPIRA Tear-A-Way stabillizer INSPIRA embroidery needle, size INSPIRA In-R-Form batting alternative 36" x 58" ¼ yard each of two prints for petals ½ yard solid fabric for center and backing Robison-Anton 40 wt. rayon embroidery thread Bobbin thread Sewing thread 2 packages of Maxi piping 12 invisible zipper 14 round pillow form Rotary cutter, mat and ruler Iron and pressing surface Pinking shears Spray starch Page 1 of 5
2 Cut: From each of the two prints for petals: Eight 7 squares From solid: One 8 square Two rectangles 7½ long x 15 wide One 15 square Prepare: Spray starch and press all of the 7 squares. Sew: 1. Place two squares (of the same fabric) right sides together. 2. Snap on your Piping Foot. Select straight stitch A1:2. 3. Set up your Circular Attachment. To snap the plate in place, insert the right prong into the needle plate and hold it in place with your thumb. Bend the attachment up slightly until the left prong slips into place. Make sure both prongs are firmly snapped in place. 4. Slide the Size Guide to 14cm. 5. Push the pivot pin through the center of the pair of squares. 6. Insert the pivot pin into the hole on the Circular Attachment. 7. Place piping between the layers, with the raw edge of the piping facing out to the edge of the square. Align the cord of the piping with the groove on the underside of the foot as shown. 8. Stitch the circle guiding the piping between the layers as you sew; stop 2 from where you started. Leave the 2 unsewn for turning. 9. Repeat with the remaining 7 squares to create 8 petals, 4 from each print. 10. Trim the excess fabric away from the stitched circle. 11. Move the Size Guide to 16cm. Page 2 of 5
3 12. Using the 8 square, stitch piping around in a circle with the right side of the fabric up and the raw edge of the piping going to the outside of the circle. 13. Start sewing ½ from the end of the piping and stop sewing an inch or so before the end. 14. Using a seam ripper, rip the stitching back to reveal the cord. 15. Trim the cord so the ends just meet and fold the fabric over the raw edge. 16. Continue stitching. 17. You now have a finished circle for the center of your flower. 18. Using your pinking shears, trim the excess fabric away from the piped circle. 19. Fold the raw edge of the piping to the back and press. 20. Using the circle as a pattern, cut a circle from INSPIRA In-R-Form. 21. Place the circle under the center of the flower. 22. Arrange your petals on a flat surface with the piped circle in the center. Pin to hold together. 23. With your Piping foot still in place, move the needle position three clicks to the left. 24. Stitch in the ditch of the piping on the center circle to hold the flower together. 25. Fold the 15 x 15 backing square into fourths, and using a ruler, mark from the corner, out, 7½ creating a circle. 26. Cut out the circle. 27. Place the invisible zipper centered on one of the 15 edges of the 7½ x 15 rectangle. Make sure right sides are together. 28. Snap on your Clear Invisible Zipper Foot. 29. Sew the first side of the zipper in place. 30. Repeat with the other 7½ x 15 rectangle, stitching the zipper between the two rectangles. 31. Snap on your regular zipper foot and finish the ends of the seams. 32. Using the circle you cut as a pattern, cut the square containing the zipper into a circle. Page 3 of 5
4 33. Place the flower centered, on top of the circle without the zipper. 34. Snap on your Piping Foot and stitch in the ditch of the piping, attaching the flower to the circle. Embroider: 1. Prepare your HUAQVARNA VIKING sewing and embroidery machine for embroidery. Attach the embroidery unit and the Sensor Q-foot. Insert a new INSPIRA embroidery needle, size 90 and thread with 40 wt. Robison Anton thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin. 2. Toggle to Embroidery Edit. 3. Touch Select Hoop and choose Do All Quilter s Hoop, 150x Load design # Hoop INSPIRA Tear-A-Way stabilizer in your Do All Quilter s Hoop. 6. Mark the center of the circle in the middle of the flower. 7. Place your flower on top of the stabilizer and slide your hoop onto your machine. 8. Touch. 9. Touch Design Positioning. 10. Select the icon for the center of the design. This puts the cursor/needle in the center of the design. Be sure the needle is aligned with the marked center of the flower and pin the flower to the stabilizer. 11. Touch, to exit Design Positioning and embroider your design. Sew: 1. Return to Sewing Mode. 2. Place the pillow front circle right sides together with the pillow back circle. Be sure the zipper is unzipped. 3. Stitch, aligning the edge of the circle with the edge of your A Foot. 4. Turn through the zipper, and insert the pillow form. Your pretty petals pillow is ready to go! Page 4 of 5
