4 COMMUNITY EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS AND MANAGEMENT Criminal Justice With a degree in Criminal Justice, you ll be prepared for a challenging career keeping your community safe and helping others. Through courses in sociology, psychology, government and law, you ll learn how to serve as an advocate, counselor, probation officer, or criminal investigator. After completing an associate of science degree at Ivy Tech Community College, you may also choose to pursue a bachelor of science degree in Criminal Justice or Criminology at a four-year institution. Corrections Vigorous law enforcement and stringent sentencing rules have led to an increase in the incarcerated population and the number of cases going to trial. In addition, the number of people on probation and parole is increasing as courts seek alternatives to imprisonment. If you have good judgment and the ability to resolve and manage conflict, you may be an excellent candidate for a career in the growing corrections field. As a corrections professional, you may be employed in a court, prison, or detention facility, where you may monitor the activities of prisoners, enforce rules, maintain order, and search correctional facilities and prisoners for contraband. Strong written and verbal communication skills, physical fitness, and familiarity with computers are helpful in preparing for Ivy Tech s Community Emergency Preparedness and Management program is designed to train students to help prevent and respond to natural or man-made disasters. Youth Services Helping young people reach their potential is a primary goal of youth services professionals. In this challenging, rewarding field, you will help young people and their families navigate the judicial and correctional system, monitor the progress of youth offenders, and prevent youth offenders from committing crimes by educating them about the causes and consequences of illegal behavior. I graduated with honors from Ivy Tech and received major scholarships to continue my education. Ivy Tech gave me more than an education. Concentrations in a wide variety of hospitality professions prepare students to welcome and serve guests in their career Event Management Event planning takes strong organizational and interpersonal skills, along with a commitment to creating a pleasant environment for event guests. Ivy Tech s concentration in Event Management will give you the expertise to succeed in budgeting, organization and planning, Restaurant Management The best restaurant managers help create a great customer experience for their customers and you can learn their secrets through Ivy Tech s Restaurant Management concentration. Classes are taught in a hands-on, intensive environment, with every student receiving a high level of personal attention from the instructor. Ivy Tech s Hotel Management concentration gives you the tools to learn how to become a successful manager who can coordinate multiple activities while making guests feel welcome. As a culinary arts student, your classroom is one of Ivy Tech s well-equipped kitchens, and your instructors provide you with the real-world experience needed to understand the industry. You ll learn safe food-handling procedures, how to prepare meals, knife techniques, and proper use and care of kitchen equipment, with classes in nutrition, menu planning, portion control, purchasing and inventory methods, and proper food storage procedures. And because only a limited number of students are accepted into this program each semester, you ll spend time with other dedicated students who share your appreciation for the art of preparing and serving food. 4 5

6 HUMAN SERVICES Case Management Community Corrections Counseling Residential and Behavioral Technician Social Services Victim s Advocate Volunteer Coordinator Degrees: Associate of Applied Science, Associate of Science, Technical Certificate* *The Technical Certificate is not available through the online Human Services program. Human Services professionals work with individuals, families and communities. Ivy Tech s Human Services program provides students with the broad understanding they need to help others meet their psychological, social, emotional, and environmental needs. Throughout the program, students examine their values and attitudes to learn how to better serve future clients. Correctional Rehabilitation Services The Correctional Rehabilitation Services concentration prepares you to work in correctional facilities, courts, youth rehabilitation, and crime prevention. You ll learn the skills you need to have a successful career helping incarcerated individuals and others in rehabilitation facilities learn constructive behaviors, while also serving your community by making your clients aware of the causes and consequences of illegal behavior. Generalist The Generalist concentration covers a wide spectrum of Human Services skills for employment at social services facilities, community centers, and youth centers. You ll learn to work with a diverse group of people, helping others meet their goals and overcome obstacles. Your classes will give you a strong foundation in areas like psychology, sociology, and personal development. Gerontology As a student in Ivy Tech s Gerontology concentration, you ll discover the social, psychological, and biological aspects of the aging process. Instruction includes the physical, mental, and social changes that people experience as they age, along with an investigation of the effects that an aging population has on our society. You ll also be trained in skills that will help you learn to work with older adults in a variety of settings. Mental Health Mental Health professionals work in areas as diverse as crisis intervention, abnormal psychology, and lifespan development, giving you the opportunity to work with a wide range of individuals and groups. Students learn how to help others cope with trying times, develop constructive interpersonal relationships, and adapt constructive behaviors. You ll also learn about ethics in this challenging, rewarding field. Substance Abuse Substance abuse is one of the most profound challenges facing our society. Through Ivy Tech s Substance Abuse concentration, you ll learn to help others recover from addiction, or help them avoid substance abuse altogether. Trained professionals can work in substance abuse treatment and youth centers, or with organizations that assist individuals in finding the help they need. When I applied for this job, I think they looked at my resume and what I had learned, and that helped me get hired. I plan to go back to school to get a bachelor s degree in social work. Asiane Hall, Ivy Tech Community College Human Services graduate ivy online The Human Services program also can be completed online, with the exception of an internship requirement and two courses that must be taken in the traditional classroom. 7 LIBRARY TECHNICAL ASSISTANT MORTUARY SCIENCE Mortuary science professionals provide much-needed support to those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Through careers as funeral directors and embalmers, professionals in this field learn how to advise, guide, and support bereaved families. Coursework also prepares students to adhere to nationally accepted standards and demonstrate their proficiency Cemeterians through national and state licensing Embalming examinations. Ethical issues also are Funeral Director highlighted, helping students understand and promote the dignity of the funeral Funeral Services service profession. Sales Education Library Support Library Technical Assistant Research Degree: Associate of Science ivy online The Library Technical Assistant program is available exclusively online. Our online programs make it even easier for you to take classes that fit your schedule, while still enjoying interaction with your classmates and learning from the same qualified instructors who teach classes on campus. Students in Ivy Tech s Library Technical Assistant program study the history of libraries and the functions and roles of the different types of library facilities. Classes emphasize technical services including the ordering, processing, and copy-cataloging of library materials; library public support services including circulation, interlibrary loan, and basic reference; and computer operations. You also can choose special classes oriented towards specific careers in a school media center or health science library, or as a library technology specialist. Children s Services If you want a career helping children develop their academic, creative, research, and technical skills, Ivy Tech s Children s Services concentration can get you started. You ll learn the unique facets of children s libraries, including choosing inventory and developing programs. Students will be prepared for careers in schools, public facilities, and other libraries designed to serve the needs of children. Library Technology Today s library extends well beyond the walls of even the largest facility, with electronic resources putting users just a mouse click away from a world of information. Learn the technology that is driving this change through Ivy Tech s concentration in Library Technology. From online databases to Internet research, this course of study will prepare you to serve as a trusted resource to students, the business community, and researchers in a wide variety of fields. Degree: Associate of Applied Science PARALEGAL STUDIES Ivy Tech s Paralegal Studies program draws upon the expertise of attorneys and other professionals in legal services, making classes consistent with the most up-to-date industry standards. Paralegals take on a wide variety of responsibilities, including everything from research and writing to interviewing and investigations. Students receive a rigorous, challenging course of study that helps them improve their writing, research, and communication skills. 8 Public Safety School of Public and Social Services Programs Ivy Tech s Pubic Safety program prepares students to work in the fields of firefighting, hazardous materials control, environmental health, and safety and public administration. Students develop the technical skills, knowledge and most importantly critical thinking and problem-solving abilities needed to succeed in these professions. Degree/certificate Programs Ivy Tech Community College offers more than 150 programs and concentrations statewide, including in the traditional classroom setting and online. Environmental Health and Safety Our concentration in Environmental Health and Safety gives you the skills to work for a public health department or at a corporation, ensuring safety objectives, coordinating environmental compliance activities, and keeping records. These careers help you keep your co-workers safe, while protecting the interests of your employer and your community. Before you enroll, check with your local campus to see what types of degrees or certificate programs are available in your area of study. An admissions counselor can help you choose an option that matches your career aspirations. The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree prepares students for a career. The Associate of Arts (AA) Degree prepares students to transfer to a four-year college or university. The curriculum is almost entirely made up of general education and liberal arts courses. The Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) Degree prepares students for transfer to a related program at a four-year school or a career in the fine arts. Fire Science This concentration gives students a strong background in fire safety, and the knowledge and ability to prevent and fight fires. Coursework focuses on the theory, formula, and application of the science of fire fighting. Students also receive extensive hands-on instruction in the practical skills used in the field. Hazardous Materials Learn OSHA and EPA regulations and the science behind the storage, transport, use, and applications of hazardous materials in this specialized concentration. Students are trained in hazardous materials response, risk management, and disposal, preparing graduates for a wide variety of public and private sector career opportunities. Public Administration Public administration careers include jobs with local, state, and federal government agencies. Public administration officials work in safety, management, public relations, human resources, marketing, research and development, among other careers. Two kinds of Associate of Science (AS) Degree programs are available: programs for technical/professional fields and for liberal arts. AS programs in technical and professional areas prepare students to start their career or to transfer to four-year institutions. AS liberal arts programs prepare students for transfer to four-year colleges or universities. The Certificate can be completed in fewer credit hours than other types of academic programs. Certificate programs prepare students to sit for a certification exam in a short amount of time, and are offered in fields most likely to lead to employment or promotion. The Technical Certificate (TC) is a one-year program that provides education in conceptual and technical skills for specific occupations.
