3 Introduction : Mobile Communications What is Mobile? Electronic device used for mobile telecommunications (mobile phone, text messaging, or data tranmission) over cellular network of specialized base station known as cell sites.
4 Introduction : Mobile Communications What is Mobile? (Continued) Differ from cordless phone offering telephone service within limited range through a fixed line and a base station owned by the subscriber As opposed to a radio phone, a cellphone offers full duplex communication, automates calling to and paging from public land mobile network, and handover during a phone call when the users move from one location to another. Most current cellphones connect to a cellular network consisting of switching point and base stations owned by a mobile network operator. Current mobile phones support many additional services such as web browsing, GPS, MP3, Video, SMS, text messaging, , gaming, bluetooth, video camera etc
