Values: C Compassion A Attitude R Responsiveness E Excellence Principle Accountabilities To provide secondary care cardiology services to the Bay of Plenty District Health Board with particular skills in intervention / PCI. To share responsibility with his/her colleagues to ensure efficient and effective inpatient and community services are provided to people within the region. To contribute to a quality and comprehensive cardiology service through effective integration of community, primary, secondary and tertiary services. To provide timely and appropriate education and consultation/advice to providers of services including primary health care providers. To participate in providing specialist services to inpatients and outpatients.
2 KEY TASKS/EXPECTED OUTCOMES 1 PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS To meet BoPDHB s standards (i.e. Legislative, Professional, Contractual, Ethical and Organisational) by understanding these standards and undertaking any steps necessary to remedy shortfalls in practice and knowledge. 3 4 CLINICAL PRACTICE To provide a safe and efficient cardiology service EXPECTED OUTCOMES Overseeing and reporting of echocardiograph service Regular ward rounds and clinical oversight of CCU and junior medical staff. Provision of cardiac catheterisation services Supervision of pacemaker clinics Supervision and teaching of junior medical staff and technical staff. Activity involved in service planning and development. Management of elective services including outpatients to ensure the service meets Ministry of Health elective services guidelines and timeframe All clinical practices comply with statutory requirements and accepted standards of best practice. Practice complies with professional standards as set out by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. All work practices, equipment and work areas comply with health and safety guidelines and infection control protocols. Works with other staff to ensure the efficient, effective and harmonious treatment of patients and running of the services. 5 ADMINISTRATIVE & OTHER DUTIES To participate in quality assurance, customer satisfaction, clinical audit and peer review activities. To undertake the customary administrative activities of a specialist and to provide professional leadership to staff in relation to GP s, other health professionals and providers. To provide assistance and advice to planning, contracting and other organisational activities when requested and to participate with medical staff and other committees as may be required and agreed from time to time. To assist with ensuring efficiency gains are made in supplies and through other improvements. To assist with budget management and costing exercises when requested. 6 TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES To instruct, guide and supervise the work of the cardiology registrars, house officers and cardiology nurse case manager and educator To provide education to staff, community groups and other providers as and when appropriate /requested. 4 7 CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION The cardiologist will be responsible for maintaining his/her knowledge and skills. This will be achieved through regular discussion with colleagues, reading relevant literature/internet access of literature attendance and participation in professional/clinical meetings and conferences, and to report back to colleagues as appropriate. 8 SERVICE DEVELOPMENT AND NEW INITIATIVES To provide leadership in programme development for improved efficiency and effectiveness. EXPECTED OUTCOMES Participates in quality assurance, customer satisfaction and peer review activities. Assists and advises on planning, contracting and costing exercises related to new initiatives. Contributes to the development of region-wide cardiology programmes. 9 ON-CALL RESPONSIBILITIES Participation in the provision of acute inpatient services. The cardiologist who is rostered for acute cover must be immediately available for telephone consultation at all times, and be available in person within 20 minutes. Supervision of junior trainees may further dictate availability requirements. The cardiologist will ensure arrangements has been made to cover on-call responsibilities when requesting leave 10 HOURS This is a full time equivalent position plus on call roster responsibilities. A part time role may be negotiated if desired.
