4 Children s Scrapstore and Artrageous Sustainability Policy Bristol Children s Scrapstore and Children s Scrapstore Taunton collect safe waste from business which is re-used as a low cost creative resource by local children s groups. Artrageous is our art and craft shop and all profits from Artrageous are used to further Scrapstore s charitable objectives. The Scrapstore identifies sustainable development as development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs 1. Sustainability is a process of ensuring the wise use of all resources within a framework in which environmental, social and economic factors are integrated. The Scrapstore is committed to placing sustainability at the heart of its work. While our most significant environmental impact, making waste things play things, is a positive one, we recognise that our own day-to-day practices can have an adverse effect on the environment. Our sustainability policy is to minimise our negative environmental impacts. Principles - The Policy is based upon commitment to the following principles: minimising the use of natural resources and preventing pollution integrating environmental and sustainable principles into the organisation s operational procedures and promoting best practice at every level complying with, and where appropriate exceeding, applicable legal and other requirements relevant to our operations continually improving our environmental performance wherever practicable communicating the Scrapstore s commitment to sustainable development across the organisation and beyond. Objectives - General 1. Operate in a socially and ethically responsible manner. 2. Build partnerships with local community and national organisations to progress environmental principles. 3. Communicate and report progress, internally and externally. 4. Use all suitable opportunities to influence our partners, suppliers and subcontractors to improve their own environmental performance. 5. Avoid the unnecessary use of environmentally damaging substances and processes. Legislative compliance 6. Achieve and if possible over-achieve the requirements of all relevant legislation. Energy, water and waste management 7. Minimise waste generation and facilitate repair, reuse and recycling over disposal of wastes. 8. Identify and implement cost effective energy & water conservation measures. 9. Maximise energy efficiency, use of renewable resources and use of low carbon technology.

5 Education and awareness - 1 Bruntland Report (1987) 10. Increase awareness of environmental responsibilities amongst staff, tenants and visitors, encourage good housekeeping measures and provide training where necessary. Transport 11. Encourage modes of transport, which minimise environmental impact and examine the operation of Scrapstore vehicles. Noise 12. Actively seek to maintain all noise within national guidelines & to reduce levels, as far as is practical, to a minimum. Purchasing 13. Consider the social, ethical and environmental aspects of products and services, as far as is practical, when making purchasing decisions. Built environment 14. Introduce sustainable construction principles to all new build and refurbishment projects. 15. Maintain and enhance biodiversity. Targets a) To reduce carbon dioxide emissions per square meter by at least 10% below 2007 levels by b) To reduce water consumption per square meter by at least 10% below 2007 levels by c) To reduce waste going to landfill by 20% below 2007 levels by Implementation Children s Scrapstore and Children s Scrapstore Taunton are committed to implementing this policy through an annual action plan. This plan is developed by the CEO, in association with staff and the management committee. The action plan includes objectives, targets, responsibilities, and monitoring and review arrangements. Monitoring and review This sustainability policy and associated action plan will be monitored and reviewed annually by the management committee.
