2 Changes to the 2016 SATs Changes to the 2016 SATs This year children in years 2 and 6 will be the first to take the new SATs papers. These tests in English and Maths will reflect the new National Curriculum. The new Y2 tests consist of: English reading Paper 1: combined reading prompt and answer booklet English reading Paper 2: reading booklet and reading answer booklet English grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 1: spelling English grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 2: questions mathematics Paper 1: arithmetic mathematics Paper 2: reasoning There is no longer a test for English writing. Teachers also provide teacher assessment information to give a broader picture of your child s attainment.
3 English reading papers 1 and 2. English reading papers 1 and 2. Both papers must be administered to all children. Both papers contain a selection of unrelated texts of increasing difficulty and a mixture of genres. Paper 1 is a combined reading prompt and answer booklet. Although not strictly timed it is expected to take approximately 30 minutes. The teacher can introduce the context and questions types. Paper 2 consists of two separate booklets; a reading booklet and an answer booklet. Although not strictly timed it is expected to take approximately 40 minutes. There are no practice questions.
4 English grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 1: spelling The teacher reads a transcript; children complete an answer booklet of 20 missing words. It will last approximately 15 minutes. Paper 2: questions This will focus on children s knowledge of grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. It will last approximately 20 minutes Writing is assessed by teacher assessment only.
5 Mathematics test Mathematics paper 1: arithmetic This paper assesses pupils confidence and mathematical fluency of whole numbers, place value and counting. It will take approximately 20 minutes to complete the paper. Mathematics paper 2: reasoning This paper assesses pupils mathematical fluency, problem solving and reasoning skills. It will take approximately 35 minutes to complete the paper. There are 5 aural questions and a practice question.
6 What happens after the tests are complete? The KS1 tests do not have set days for their administration but schools must administer the tests during May, Teachers mark the papers internally. From 2016, scaled scores will be used to report national curriculum test outcomes. Scaled scores help test results to be reported consistently from one year to the next. National curriculum tests are designed to be as similar as possible year on year, but slight differences in difficulty will occur between years. Scaled scores maintain their meaning over time so that two pupils achieving the same scaled score in different years will have demonstrated the same attainment. For the KS1 tests a scaled score of 100 will always represent the expected standard. A pupil s scaled score will be based on their raw score. The raw score is the total number of marks a pupil receives in a test, based on the number of questions they answered correctly. The pupil s raw score will be translated into a scaled score using a conversion table. Teachers will need to use these to translate pupils raw scores into scaled scores to see whether each pupil has met the expected standard. Outcomes of the TA and tests will be reported in the end of year school report.
7 Teacher assessment Teacher assessment (TA) is the main focus for end of KS1 assessment and reporting. It is carried out as part of teaching and learning. TA provides a judgement that is based on knowledge of how the pupil has performed over time and in a variety of contexts. Frameworks for English reading, writing and mathematics For KS1 English reading, English writing and mathematics, teacher assessment is the primary outcome used for accountability and teachers should refer to the interim frameworks. The frameworks contain 3 standards: working towards the expected standard working at the expected standard working at greater depth within the expected standard Pupils will be grouped into 4 categories for accountability; the 3 categories above plus an additional category for those pupils that do not meet the working towards standard. Framework for science For KS1 science, where results are not used for formal accountability, the framework contains 1 standard: working at the expected standard. Pupils will be grouped into 2 categories; the working at the expected standard category plus an additional category for those pupils that do not meet that standard. Moderation- we have to take part in a moderation process to ensure consistency of our judgements against the national standards.
8 Keep calm The tests are carried out in the nurturing environment of your child s classroom. We present them to the children as an opportunity to show what they can do. There will be tricky bits to have a go at and other parts that they will be able to do. Please be positive with your child that all schools are doing the same. The teachers are very proud of the children s learning and everyone wants the assessments to be a good experience. Good attendance is crucial, as well as a good night s sleep!
