1 Job Description JOB TITLE: DIRECTORATE: Practice Nurse/Clinic Nurse Corporate GRADE: Band 5 REPORTS TO: Clinical Nurse Specialist ACCOUNTABLE TO: Occupational Health Manager Job Summary The service is provided from bases at QMC; City Hospital; Rampton Hospital. The role is to provide the fundamentals of practice nursing, with a high clinical workload, without direct supervision. Undertaking a specified workload and regularly taking charge of an area of work or department in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility. The service aims to provide a comprehensive and impartial service to approximately 27,500 employees from QMC campus; City Hospital campus; Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust; and a number of non NHS clients of Nottingham Occupational Health. 2 Undertake health assessment by questionnaire and by health interview including actions and health promotion as required. To be competent in the use of equipment in order to undertake individual and group health screening and surveillance programmes e.g. eyesight testing, lung function tests and assist the Occupational Health Physician with specialist medicals asessments for specific work risks e.g. off shore workers, drivers. Assess and implement immunisation programmes for individuals, requiring a comprehensive knowledge of vaccines and conforming to agreed patient group directions. Undertake management of reported sharps incidents requiring a comprehensive knowledge of blood borne viruses and related Trust and OH policies. Undertake clinical activities e.g. phlebotomy, health assessments, Health and Wellbeing sessions. Undertake assessment of illness or accident and treat clients where it is seen necessary under present policy or refer to their General Practitioner or the Emergency department or other agency. Undertake nursing procedures and techniques and advice in accordance with agreed policies and guidelines. e.g. Infection Control. Respond to a diverse range of telephone requests for advice. Be responsible for checking, calibrating and maintaining clinical equipment and undertaking clinical Stock checks and cleanliness of clinical areas. Comply with the Trusts Medicines Code of Practice in particular: Ordering, receipt, storage, stock control, administration and disposal of drugs. Maintain the Occupational Health database by accurately inputting clinical information. Education Be responsible on a regular basis for the department with recourse to senior colleagues working in the other departments. Management To keep the Clinical Nurse Specialist informed of significant changes in the day to day situation in the department. To observe a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of self, work colleagues, visitors and clients within the Occupational Health Department, in addition to any specific risk management associated with this post. Personal professional development To keep up to date with NMC, Trust and local policies and guidelines and adhere to these at all times. To be a fully active and a committed member of the multidisciplinary team operating within the service. To demonstrate an insight into own professional development, contributing to the process of identifying own educational and clinical needs in conjunction with the Clinical Nurse Specialist. Participate in own Individual Performance Review. To ensure own educational commitment is at least sufficient to maintain PREP requirements and to ensure own mandatory training certificates are current, in liaison with the Clinical Nurse Specialist
3 To work within and accept responsibility for maintaining agreed levels of clinical competence and ensure clinical competency as new technologies are introduced. Administration Maintain good working relationships with managers and staff in all departments served whilst conforming to guidelines on confidentiality. Be responsible for maintaining accurate, continuous and confidential health records for all employees and ensure their security in line with departmental policy. Participate in the collection of data of a statistical nature and to be able to use software programmes which record nurse activity. Contribute to audit quality and research processes. To immediately report to their manager any shortcomings in health and safety procedures and practice. To report any accidents or dangerous incidents to their immediate manager and safety representative as early as possible and submit a completed accident/incident form. To use protective clothing and equipment where provided. Whilst the aim of the Trust is to promote a co-operative and constructive view of health and safety concerns in the organisation, all staff must be aware that a wilful or irresponsible disregard for safety matters may give rise to disciplinary proceedings. Governance To actively participate in governance activities to ensure that the highest standards of care and business conduct are achieved. General Policies Procedures and Practices To comply with all Trust policies, procedures and practices and to be responsible for keeping up to date with any changes to these.
5 Working Conditions The post holders working conditions - there is a large component within the role which involves carry of equipment from various OH departments to outside companies and also moving of equipment to and from the different sites.
