1 History of Rock Music Music 139 Orange Coast College SPRING 2013 Wednesday evening FA 119 Instructor: Joe Poshek Course website MyOCC - Blackboard INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: The student will be able to: 1. Discuss the historical development of rock music. 2. Explain important musical and technical terms used in the discussion of rock music. 3. Appreciate the artistry of all types of music. 4. Explain how social influences affect the development of rock music and how rock music has influenced our society. 5. Explain the evolution of American popular music into Rock 6. Explain the evolution of Rock music through the various era s and styles 7. Identify and explain the different styles of rock music 8. Discuss the concept of evolution/revolution as it relates to the Eurocentric music genre 9. Identify technological influences in the evolution of rock music STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: The student will be able to: 1. Aurally identify and differentiate between the various styles of rock music. 2. Demonstrate knowledge of historical artists, musical and cultural influences effecting rock music. ATTENDANCE Punctual attendance is required for this course GRADING Grades are based upon the point total a student earns during the semester. There are 4 tests worth a total of 280 points (the first 3 exams are 60 points each, the final is 100 points). In addition there are up to 20 points for supplemental work announced during the semester. The grades are as follows:
2 A- 240 B- 215 C- 190 D- 165 TEST DATES 1. February 20 - Early days of Rock 2. March 13 - Beatles 3. April 17 - British Rock 4. May 22 - FINAL Makeup exam day May 22 Four multiple choice scantron tests will be given. Test questions are selected from the lectures and videos shown in class and from the required reading. You are expected to understand all of the technical terms covered in the lectures. Makeup tests given on Wednesday, May 22. Only one test can be made up. Makeup tests will only be worth 50 points instead of 60. You can retake a test you have already taken, you will earn the higher grade of the two tests. The final cannot be retaken. There will be a number of opportunities to complete supplemental credit projects usually worth 5 to 10 points. These projects will be announced in class and will be available online. How to study for this class Each week read over the lecture notes posted online before and after the lecture. During the lectures take notes on important topics and concepts. To study for the exams review all class notes and lecture notes posted online in the class website. Much of the test material is highlighted in RED in the lecture notes.

6 All tests require a new red scantron form (100 questions on each side, Form No. F-289-ERI-L). Each test has 60 multiple choice or true/false questions. Approximately 1½ hour will be allocated for each test. Make up tests will be given on Wednesday, May 22. Only one makeup test will be allowed. FINAL!!!!! May 22.
