We will develop awareness of our breath, experience relaxation while using imagery for healing and will end with a short meditation to discover the peace within. Susan Ford teaches gentle yoga at SF Integral Yoga Institute, BORP, St. Mary s Hospital, SF and as a therapeutic yoga instructor with private clients. Dance Class by AXIS / Get inmotion! For all ages and abilities. 11:30am 12:15-12:45pm 12:45-1:15pm 1:30pm 2:00pm 2:30pm 3:00pm Tai Chi by BORP Sarah Dunham, Teacher We start with a short meditation becoming aware of Qi (internal energy) and developing the conscious cooperation of mind and body, the sensation of being relaxed yet alert. Then come Qi Gong exercises to gently remove tension from muscles and joints, allowing Qi to strengthen and circulate. Finally we practice the Tai Chi form, a pattern of slow, continuous movements precise enough to provide total attention on the activity, with the absence of anticipation and with complete tranquility. Gina Biter-Mundt, Adaptive Sports Consultant, Kaiser Foundation Rehabilitation Center Presentation and Q&A, see biography below. AXIS Dance Company Performance / falling up, choreographed by Sonsherée Giles falling up was created as a site-specific piece for the Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco. It was designed for the viewers to see art and movement in an outdoor urban environment and for quotidian movements to shift from ordinary to extraordinary. Architecture, birds, buses and streams of traffic became a landscape for the dancers to flock, arrange, re-arrange, roll and play. falling up is a structured improvisation based on words, tasks, and listening. Yoga by BORP Susan Ford, Teacher See description for 10:30am class. Dance Class by AXIS / Get inmotion See description for 11:00am class. 3 AXIS Dance Company is highly regarded the world over for its unflagging artistic and educational standards and for paving the way for physically-integrated dance within the contemporary dance community. More than any other physicallyintegrated company in the U.S., AXIS Dance Company has been a bridge between contemporary dance and physically-integrated dance. The company of seven dancers with and without disabilities has performed in theaters and dance spaces at its home base in the Bay Area, on tour throughout the U.S., as well as in Germany and Russia. Under the Artistic Direction of Judith Smith, the company has commissioned works by such movement innovators as Bill T. Jones, Stephen Petronio, Joe Goode, Victoria Marks, Ann Carlson, David Dorfman, Alex Ketley, Joanna Haigood, Sonya Delwaide, and Margaret Jenkins and worked with world-renowned composers Meredith Monk, Fred Frith and Joan Jeanrenaud. Some recent professional highlights include extensive touring throughout the U.S., multi-year commissions from the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, and being named one of the Bay Area's top 10 high impact non-profit organizations by Philanthropedia. Additionally, AXIS was featured on KQED s SPARK program and KRCB s One in 5 Stories. AXIS Dance Company is a many-time Isadora Duncan Dance Award (Izzie) winner and was featured on the nationally broadcast FOX television show So You Think You Can Dance in 2011 and Through its model education programs Dance Access and its youth component Dance Access/KIDS!, AXIS offers classes and workshops, school assemblies, presentations, lecture demonstrations and residencies locally and abroad for adults and youth of all abilities. AXIS is the primary organization that provides pre-professional training to adult dancers with disabilities, consisting of advanced level master classes taught by well-known dance educators/choreographers, week-long summer intensives and university residencies.
4 Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program (BORP) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization working to improve the health, independence and social integration of people with physical disabilities through sports, fitness and recreation programs. At BORP, we believe that sports and recreation provide a path to greater achievement to which all people should have access, and we continually strive to make this a reality. BORP is headquartered in Berkeley, California and is the leading provider and promoter of accessible sports and recreation opportunities for children and adults with physical disabilities in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to our high quality innovative sports and recreation programs, our expert staff provides advocacy, trainings, referrals and consultation services and have helped initiate adaptive sports programs in several other cities across the state. BORP also conducts disability awareness trainings and adaptive sports exhibitions for a variety of community agencies and serves as a valuable resource to physical therapists, rehabilitation hospitals, parks and recreation departments and related organizations. Gina Biter-Mundt, Adaptive Sports Consultant, Kaiser Foundation Rehabilitation Center, earned her B.A. & M.A. in Kinesiology at Sonoma State University and taught Adapted PE for 20 years at Napa Valley College and 14 years at Solano Community College. While earning her degree, she participated in various sports and recreational opportunities at the regional, national and international levels, securing a spot on the USA swim team and competing in the 1988 Paralympics in Seoul, South Korea. She has also participated in programs through ETC (Sea Kayaking and Whitewater rafting), has been snow skiing through Disabled Sports USA and was a member of the Santa Rosa Quad rugby team in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
5 She earned her Aquatic Therapeutic Exercise Certification and has been involved the USA swim program for a number of years, first as an athlete and then as an age group coach. Later, she became a certified deck official for USA Swimming, running the official timing system for local swims meets when her daughter became a successful swimmer and qualified for nationals at the age of 16. Her years of teaching, coaching and coordinating exercise programs proved to be a valuable tool as she transitioned into a new career at Kaiser Foundation Rehabilitation Center as their first Adapted Sports Consultant. She is now involved in education and community reintegration for people who have experienced a traumatic injury and are now living with a disability or limitation. She shows by example that having a disability does not limit one s hopes, dreams and goals of being successful both in one s personal and professional lives.
