YOUR CONTRIBUTION IS INDISPENSABLE The protection of the environment is the responsibility of each one of us. The tourist sector in Costa Rica is working very hard to suggest sustainable practices in favor of the environment to companies, service providers, collaborators and customers. The recommendations of sustainable practices in this document are very useful and easy to implement thanks to their simplicity and the positive results they trigger, allowing the accomplishment of a fundamental objective: Sustainable Development. Solid waste Solid waste is a major issue because not only do we have to dispose of its components but also because a huge quantity of polluting energy is produced at every step of the production. However, thanks to adequate measures, you can reduce your final waste volume by 40 up to 60 %. On the basis of a study carried out throughout 2009, we managed to assess the monthly solid waste volume generated by our tours: Plastic waste: 2.3 kg Glass waste: 2.0 kg Aluminum waste: 1.0 kg Non-recyclable materials: 1.0 kg Organic waste: 1.2 kg Paper waste: 0 kg Currently, the waste is delivered to the collection centers of each hotel or is properly treated in office of our transport companies, allowing us to reduce to a maximum our ecological footprint. a. Recycle, use recycle bins and properly sort out the waste according to its category. b. Reuse: Do you really need to buy a new bottle of water at each use? Fill again your bottle! c. Reduce your consumption: Each time you buy new products, ask yourself if it really indispensable.
d. Shop wisely: Before buying a product, look if its characteristics and provenance are environmentally-friendly. e. Properly use the recycle bins available in most of the tourist attractions that we visit during our tours. f. Inquire about the recycling programs implemented in the tourist attractions that you visit. If there are none, suggest the providers they should get involve in sustainable development. b. We put recycle bins in the buses for your best convenience. c. We choose to work with service providers (hotels, car renting companies, theme parks ) which respect the environment and which have already implemented recycle programs. d. In our office, we sort out waste and bring it to the collection center of Escazu. e. We set up a program to limit the purchase of polluting equipment. f. Through this program, we commit ourselves to buy reusable packaging products when it is possible. g. We use oxo-biodegradable bags to collect waste. Fossil fuels Fossil fuels are the cause of environmental issues that concern the entire world. The accumulation of greenhouse gas, the acidification of the atmosphere, air pollution or the damage in the superficial stratums and in the tropospheric ozone are the evidence of environmental issues triggered by the burning of fossil fuels like nitrogen and sulfur. Currently, the burning of petroleum accounts for 30 % of the dioxide emissions in the atmosphere. a. Make sure that the carriers you are contracting (tourist operators, car renting companies ) comply with the environmental legislations in force in the country. In Costa Rica, cars must pass a technical inspection (Revisión Técnica Vehicular) each year and the tax disc (Registro de Revisión) must be in the vehicle.
b. Preferably use unleaded petrol. c. A tree against pollution: In Costa Rica, many organizations will encourage you to plant a tree. You will find below the website of 2 associations that we support: i. Programa Amigable con el Cambio Climático: ii. Fondo Nacional de Financiamiento Forestal (FONAFIFO): d. Thanks to these organizations, you can assess your ecological footprint and reduce your daily dioxide emissions (transportation in cars or plane for instance). In other words, instead of generating a negative impact on the environment you could live in harmony with the environment. a. We choose service providers which comply with the legislations in force regarding the emission of toxic fumes, use extraction equipment and adequate filters in optimal conditions and do all the controls established by the law. b. We design information campaigns in order to raise awareness among our collaborators regarding the reduction and the proper handling of waste and pollution. c. We avoid offering sports and activities which have a significant negative impact on the environment such as trial, jet-ski, motocross Water consumption Water is one of the most precious natural resources of our planet but it is also one of the most threatened. Although Earth is composed of 75% water, less than 1% is drinkable. You will find high quality drinkable water in the areas where the hotels are located but although it looks inexhaustible, it is our duty to use it responsibly. a. Use the least water possible when washing yourself. b. Close the tap when brushing your teeth or shaving. c. Don t use the toilets like a wastepaper bin.
a. We work with service providers (hotels, restaurants ) which have toilets whose ball cock is adjusted to limit water consumption at each flush. b. We promote the reuse of water for plant watering. c. We use biodegradable cleaning products. d. In our offices, we implemented a water leak prevention program. e. We monitor our water consumption. Energy consumption Most of our daily activities use energy. However, this energy can be produced by renewable or non-renewable energy sources. In order to act in favor of the environment, you should use the most renewable energies possible. Even though the situation sometimes doesn t depend on us, we can limit our ecological footprint by rationalizing our energy consumption. a. Plug out all electronic devices that you are not using. Although they aren t turned on, many devices keep using energy. One of the best examples is the mobile charger. b. Turn off the lights that are not necessary. We frequently forget to turn off the lights during the day which cause a waste of energy. c. Don t leave the air conditioning or the heat on when you are going out. d. The hair dryer has one specific function and it isn t designed to dry clothes or shoes. a. We promote the use of low energy light bulbs. b. At the end of our working day, we switch off all the electronic devices. c. We preferably use low energy electronic devices and our personal is trained to reduce the waste of energy.
Management of natural areas The forests are the lungs of our planet, water sources, refuges for wildlife species, they provide raw materials for medicine and industries, they absorb carbon dioxide In other words, the forests are indispensable to life. In Costa Rica, many natural areas are a home to a high biodiversity such as the National Parks, the Private Reserves, the Conservation Areas If you wish to visit them, please take a look at the list of recommendations below in order to limit your negative impact on these ecosystems: a. When visiting protected areas, try to obtain advices and read the information available for the visitors. b. Don t extract any vegetal or animal species of the forest. c. During your tour, try to make the least noise possible, use natural repels and products. d. Follow the signs you come across and stay on the paths. e. Don t leave any objet or waste in the nature. f. Contact us about our reforestation programs and activities. g. Respect the habitat of wild animals. When you take a photo of birds, always keep a safety distance and don t use flash directly. Keep in mind that they tend to be more aggressive during their nesting period. a. We support La Estación Las Tortugas and La Estación Las Pumas, non-profitable NGOs which fight for the conservation of the environment and wild animals. b. We sponsor the Maleku and Kelkoldi indigenous communities (respectively living in San Carlos and Limón) as well as the Quitirrisí Reserve in Puriscal which are involve in the conservation of the environment.
