3 1 Summary of 1962 study Flaming Gorge Dam is located approximately 45 miles upstream from Dinosaur National Monument. The dam was completed in December Prior to the closure of Flaming Gorge Dam, the National Park Service initiated a study (National Park Contract No ) to assess and survey the Green River and its surrounding environment. This study is described in detail by Woodbury (1963). This study was led by Dr. Stephen Durrant from the University of Utah. The expedition party sampled locations along the Green River from the Gates of Lodore downstream to Split Mountain from 20 July to 6 August Samples were also collected on the Yampa River near Deer Lodge and Echo Park. Data were collected on aquatic plants, aquatic invertebrates, fishes, as well as riparian and plants and animals. The objective of their aquatic invertebrate sampling was to determine the species present in the Green River prior to the closure of Flaming Gorge Dam. A synopsis of their sampling methods from Woodbury (1963) is as follows: At each site, samples were collected from all habitat types present. Samples were collected using a hand screen and a ¼ inch minnow seine. Abundance data is presented in the report, but this data should be evaluated cautiously, as the samples were qualitative in nature. It seemed that the invertebrates were likely removed from the debris in the field and identified back at the University of Utah. Drs. George Edmunds, Jr. and Arden Gaufin of the University of Utah consulted in the collection and identification of the aquatic invertebrates. We transcribed the aquatic invertebrate data in Woodbury s (1963) into our computer system. Where taxonomic changes had occurred since 1963, we changed their classification (invertebrate genus or species names) to those currently valid. Study design Our objective was to replicate the 1962 expedition as closely as possible. We collected samples at the same locations (Table 1), at the same time of the year (Table 2), using similar methods as the 1962 study.

Elevation was determined using U.S. Geological Survey 7.5 min topographic maps. Water and air temperatures were determined at the time of sampling using thermometers. The conductivity of the water was determined using an Oakton TDS Testr 40 hand held meter and the ph was determined using an Oakton ph Testr 2. Aquatic invertebrates Qualitative samples The objective of qualitative invertebrate collections was to collect as many different kinds of invertebrates living at a site as possible. Qualitative collections of invertebrates were done at all sites. Samples were collected with a rectangular kicknet (457 x 229 mm) with a 500 micron mesh net and by hand picking invertebrates from woody debris and large boulders. All available habitat types (e.g., riffles, po ols, back waters) were sampled and all samples were composited to form a single sample from each site.

5 3 Quantitative samples The objective of quantitative invertebrate sampling was to collect invertebrates from a fixed sampling area and estimate their relative abundances. Quantitative samples were collected using a modified Surber sampler (0.093 m 2 ) with a 500 micron mesh net. Samples were collected by disturbing the area immediately upstream of the net with our hands and scrubbing individual substrate particles within the sampling area and allowing the invertebrates and detritus to wash downstream into the net. Eight samples were collected throughout a sampling reach and composited to make a single sample of approximately 0.7 m 2 (8 samples x m 2 ). Laboratory methods The general procedures followed for processing invertebrate samples were similar to those recommended by the United States Geological Survey (Cuffney et al. 1993) and are described in greater detail and rationalized in Vinson and Hawkins (1996). Both qualitat ive and quantitative samples were identified in their entirety, i.e., all of t he organisms collected were identified. Organisms were identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible based on organism maturity, except for Chironomidae and some non-insect groups, which were identified to sub-family or Class or Order. Insects were most frequently identified to genus or family for small, immature, or damaged specimens. Species level identifications were based on identification keys, distributions records, and the author s experience. The number of individual invertebrates collected and identified in each sample is shown in Table 2. All identified invertebrates in each sample were composited into a single museum-grade glass screw-top vial with a polypropylene lid and polypropylene liner. Sample labels were written with fade proof permanent black carbon ink on waterproof paper. Information on each label included the sampling location, sampling date and a unique catalog number. Vials were filled with 70% ethanol. All samples were retained in our collection and will be sent to Dinosaur National Monument upon request. These samples will also be made available to other researchers upon request and permission from the National Park Service. Data analysis and presentation The primary objective of this study was to compare the invertebrate assemblages collected in 1962 to those collected in Data are provided on the occurrence and relative abundance

6 4 of aquatic invertebrates collected at each site for qualitative (1962 and 2001) and quantitative (2001) samples as well as composite (quantitative and qualitative samples) samples (2001) and a composite of all invertebrates collected by each study for all sampling locations. We used the data collected in 1962 as the basis for all comparisons presented here. We feel that our sampling effort was as great or greater than that done in Thus, if we failed to find a taxon, we think this suggests that this taxon may be extirpated from this reach of the river. Comparisons of taxa collected at individual sites should be done by comparing their data to the data from our qualitative samples, as these were done using similar methods, and presumably similar sampling effort, as was done in Table 2. Sampling dates, habitats sampled, type of sample collected, and the number of invertebrates identified in each sample. Data from 1962 is from Woodbury (1963). Sample ID is the National Aquatic Monitoring Center s identification number. 7 5 Results & Discussion Physical habitat conditions There appeared to be no large obvious differences in aquatic invertebrate habitat conditions between 1962 and Water temperatures which have changed substantially upstream, were just a few degrees different. From the general site descriptions provided in Woodbury (1963) substrate and riparian conditions also appeared similar between study periods. However, the reader should see work by Dr. Jack Schmidt and Mr. Paul Grams from Utah State University who documented geomorphological changes in this river corridor since the closure of Flaming Gorge Dam (e.g., Grams 1997). 8 6 Aquatic invertebrate assemblages The aquatic invertebrate assemblages collected nearly 40 years apart were more similar than we anticipated. In a similar study conducted upstream, Vinson (2001) found little similarity between the pre- and post Flaming Gorge Dam invertebrate assemblages. In the stream reach immediately downstream from Flaming Gorge Dam, the number of macroinvertebrate genera declined from > 70 to < 30 following dam closure. In this study the differences were far less. In 1962 a total of 31 unique aquatic invertebrates were collected from 8 orders and 24 families. At the genus level they collected 2 Coleoptera, 4 Diptera (excluding Chironomidae), 12 Ephemeroptera, 3 Hemiptera, 3 Odonata, 1 Plecoptera, and 4 genera of Trichoptera. They did not report collecting any non-insect invertebrates. In 2001 we collected a total of 62 unique taxa from 8 orders and 31 families. At the genus level we collected 3 Coleoptera, 3 Diptera (excluding Chironomidae), 12 Ephemeroptera, 1 Hemiptera, 1 Odonata, 2 Plecoptera, and 6 genera of Trichoptera. We also collected 2 genera of gastropod, the common Physella [Gastropoda: Physidae], and a rare limpet, Ferrissia rivularis [Gastropoda: Ancylidae]. Individual taxa lists for each sample, sampling location, and study are provided in Appendices 1-3. Taxa found in 1962, but not in 2001 There were several taxa collected in 1962 that we did not collect in These were Zaitzevia [Coleoptera: Elmidae], Gyrinus [Coleoptera: Gyrinidae], Palpomyia [Diptera: Ceratopogonidae], Ephemerella inermis [Ephemeroptera: Ephemerellidae], Heptagenia elegantula [Ephemeroptera: Heptageniidae], Isonychia campestris [Ephemeroptera: Isonychiidae], Lachlania powelli [Ephemeroptera: Oligoneuriidae], Pseudiron [Ephemeroptera: Psuedironidae], Notonecta, [Hemiptera: Notonectidae], Rhagovelia distincta [Hemiptera: Veliidae], Argia [Odonata: Coenagrionidae], Gomphus intricatus, Ophiogomphus severus [Odonata: Gomphidae], Claassenia sabulosa [Plecoptera: Perlidae], Cheumatopsyche [Trichoptera: Hydropsychidae], Nectopsyche [Trichoptera: Leptoceridae]. The few other minor differences between the taxa lists were primarily at the genus or species level, and are likely due to the maturity of the specimens collected in 1962 versus 2001, e.g., Simulium. For the taxa described above that were collected in 1962, but not in 2001, we offer the

9 7 following ideas. The Coleoptera; Zaitzevia, Gyrinus, and Hemiptera; Notonecta and Rhagovelia distincta were likely still present in the river, but we failed to collect them. These taxa are widespread in their distributions, but can be elusive to collect and they generally occupy more specialized slow water habitats that we did not sample as intensively as the main river channel. For Diptera, we did not collect Palpomyia, but we did collect 2 other Ceratopogonidae; Dasyhelea and Probezzia, and we also collected several other Ceratopogonidae individuals that were too immature to positively identify to genus. Therefore, Palpomyia may be present in the river. At the present, we do not know enough about its habitat requirements to suggest otherwise. Many of the immature Simuliidae that we collected were likely Simulium. We frequently collect Simulium, upstream and downstream from the monument. Three of the five mayflies that we failed to collect, Isonychia campestris, Lachlania powelli and Pseudiron may be extirpated from the river. We not find them in this study and we have not collected them in over 8 years of sampling both upstream and downstream from Dinosaur National Monument. The other 2 mayflies, E. inermis and Heptagenia sp., are frequently collected by us both upstream and downstream from the monument, and we suspect they are still present in this reach of the river, but for some unexplainable reason we failed to collect them. The Odonates, Argia, Gomphus intricatus, and Ophiogomphus severus, are likely still present in the river as well. We have collected these genera upstream and downstream from Dinosaur National Monument over the last several years. The single stonefly collected in 1962, Claassenia sabulosa, was not found by us in this study. We have collected it in recent years in the Green River upstream from Flaming Gorge Dam, but not downstream from Flaming Gorge Dam, and it too may be extirpated from this reach of the river. One of the two caddisflies we did not collect, Cheumatopsyche, is commonly found by us upstream and downstream from Dinosaur National Monument. The other genera, Nectopsyche, has been collected by us upstream of Flaming Gorge Dam, near the town of Green River, Wyoming, during the last several years, but we have not found it downstream from the dam. It may be extirpated as well. While there are several taxa that may be extirpated from this reach of the river since the closure of Flaming Gorge Dam. The differences we observed over the last 40 years in this reach of the river are much less than those we documented in upstream reaches. The reason for this is

10 8 most likely because of the influence the unregulated Yampa River and other smaller tributary streams impart on the Green River downstream from their confluences. Opportunities for future work We feel that the work presented here is preliminary, but provides a solid foundation on which we can expand our understanding of the effects of the operation of Flaming Gorge Dam on the downstream Green River ecosystem. We demonstrated that the effects of Flaming Gorge Dam on downstream biota are certainly ameliorated in downstream reaches, but impacts of the dam are still discernable. These and additional data will be valuable to assess longer term impacts of the dam, especially as discharge and water temperature releases from the dam are altered in the future. In 2001, our laboratory had a fairly aggressive, but primarily unfunded, research program on the Green River. We collected aquatic invertebrates from near Fontenelle Dam downstream to the mouth of the Green River where it joins the Colorado River. In 2002 and future years we would like to acquire funding to expand our sampling on the Green River. We encourage the National Park Service to partner with us in this project.
