Rwanda Ethnic Conflict With extra genocide and ethnic cleansing! By Natalie Walter and Thomas Wood
Maps
Where and Why Many Hutus are displaced in neighboring countries due to the Tutsis gaining power. Still many remain and are a majority.
Spawning of conflict Originally, Hutus were the majority but Tutsis controlled the government. Hutus were oppressed and bad blood was made.tutsis gained power by raising cattle giving them more money than the farming Hutus.
Global Effect on Conflict Belgian government supported Tutsis and gave them power. Rwanda being given independence disrupted power structure due to improper colonization. Descendents of Tutsis invade from Uganda.
Timeline 1. Germany lost possession of Rwanda during the First World War, the land was given to the Belgians which supported and favored Tutsis. 2. Rwanda became an independent country in 1962, during this time Hutus gained control and imposed ethnic cleansing and genocide of the Tutsis, many Tutsis left to Uganda. 3. An agreement to share power was signed in In 1994 the president was assassinated and the Hutus ignored the agreement and continued to inflict a three month long genocide that killed 800,000 Tutsis. 5. After the genocide, Tutsis gained control of the country, making two million Hutus flee into neighboring countries.
Five Themes of Geography Location and Place - Rwanda is in central, east Africa. Rwanda is slightly below the equator, bordered by Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Human-Environment Interaction - The way each group utilized the environment (farming vs. ranching) caused an economic gap giving the Tutsis an upper hand for many years. Movement - Around 300,000 Tutsis fled the country because of a Hutu revolution in 1959 and two million Hutus fled to neighboring countries from the ethnic cleansing that followed after the Tutsis victory. Region - Rwanda is qualified as a country of Eastern Africa, though it borders the Central African region. Inside Rwanda there are five prominent regions, North, East, Kigali, South, and West.
Cultural Conflict The main differences between Tutsis and Hutus is the economic differences. Tutsis are the ruling upper class. Hutus are the poor lower class masses.
Hypotheses If the middle class of rwanda is increased and the the differences between the economic classes are decreased, then the two ethnicities would eventually would morph because that the main differences between the groups are economic. This could be done by investments in Rwanda that should have been done while it was a colony. If the power is shared between the government and the people, with more input coming from both the Hutus and the Tutsis, then the two ethnicities can work more as a team rather than enemies.

Questions What body part was used for racial discrimination? How did the Tutsis originally acquire power? Who now has power over Rwanda? What region of Africa is Rwanda part of? When did Rwanda become an independent country?
