3 Slide 7 Ergonomics The scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data, and methods to design in order to enhance human well-being and optimize overall system performance. Note: Also referred to as human factors. 7 Slide 8 Ergonomics in Occupational Health and Safety Relationship to CAN /CSA Z1000 Occupational Health and Safety Management System An OHSMS describes the interrelated elements in the workplace to support the development and implementation of an effective OHS program. These elements include: management commitment leadership planning implementation evaluation continual improvement 8 Slide 9 Objective of CSA Z1004 To enable an organization to: Enhance worker health, safety, and well-being Optimize system performance Prevent occupational injuries, illnesses, and fatalities Reduce the severity of harm related to occupational activities and work environments through the systematic Application of Ergonomics. 9

4 Slide 10 Structure of the Standard The normative requirements of the Standard are in the main body Annex A: informative guidance material intended to assist users in understanding and complying with the Standard. Annex B: provides tools and checklists evidence-based information and examples application will enable organizations to meet the objectives of the Standard. 10 Slide 11 The Standard emphasizes prevention Prevention strategies that proactively identify hazards and eliminate them where possible. Where elimination is not possible, prevention can be achieved through appropriate risk assessment and control techniques. 11 Slide 12 Scope This Standard specifies requirements and provides guidance for the systematic Application of Ergonomics to the development, design, use, management, and improvement of work systems through the implementation of an Ergonomics Process. 12

5 Slide 13 Principles of an Effective Ergonomics Process Worker health, safety, and well-being and system performance are enhanced through the use of ergonomics. Ergonomics has its greatest benefit when used early in the design of a work system. 13 Slide 14 Principles of an Effective Ergonomics Process The user-centered approach ensures that worker characteristics and needs are accommodated. Worker participation is essential as they have valuable knowledge for work system design. An Ergonomics Process operates effectively when it is integrated within the OHSMS 14 Slide 15 PLAN-DO-CHECK-ACT 15

6 Slide 16 Planning (Plan) The organization shall determine, provide, and maintain the infrastructure and resources needed to achieve conformity to this Standard, including the appropriate financial, human, and organizational resources. Commitment, leadership and participation (management commitment, responsibility, accountability and authority, and worker participation) Legal and other requirements Objectives and targets Recognize and manage change 16 Slide 17 Implementation (Do): Application of Ergonomics The use of ergonomics principles to: identify and eliminate hazards assess and control risks at each stage of design of any work system to enhance worker health, safety, and well being and optimize system performance. Includes monitoring and follow up of protective and preventive measures 17 Slide 18 Application of Ergonomics in Design 18

7 Slide 19 Evaluating the Ergonomics Process (Check) Determines whether objectives and targets have been met Confirms that preventive and protective measures have been taken and are effective Enables continual improvement 19 Slide 20 Continual Improvement (Act) Management review Senior management review of the Ergonomics Process at planned intervals Intended to ensure its continuing suitability, adequacy, and effectiveness Includes the assessment of opportunities for continual improvement. 20 Slide 21 Continual Improvement (Act) Continual improvement The organization shall have an ongoing process to assess opportunities for continual improvement Includes a review of current control and implementation strategies as well as best available methods, technologies, and procedures. 21

8 Slide 22 Annex B- Checklists and Observational Tools Annex B provides Checklists and Observational Tools to help with the process of examining the workplace The Checklists and Observational Tools are divided into three broad categories PHYSICAL, WORK ORGANIZATION & COGNITIVE aspects Used to help identify hazards and provides recommendations and guidance to eliminate or minimize hazards identified or to control any residual risk. These are examples only other such tools and checklists demonstrated to be equally effective through professional use, best practice, or citations in the scientific literature can be used.
