2 The Mission of the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County The Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County (AHCMC), in partnership with the community, cultivates and supports excellence in the arts and humanities, expands access to cultural expression, and contributes to economic vitality in the region. Introduction Arts patron Ida F. Haimovicz developed her artistic talent as a sculptor late in life, but as she grew older she wished that she had started much sooner. Because of this, she wanted to encourage young people to develop and pursue their talent in visual art while they are young. In her memory, her family created an endowment with AHCMC. AHCMC gratefully recognizes the Family of Ida F. Haimovicz for their generous gift to endow this award. Purpose The purpose of the Ida F. Haimovicz Visual Arts Award is to benefit a Montgomery County high school senior in the class of 2017, and who intends to pursue the study of and/or career in the visual arts. The $3,000 Ida F. Haimovicz Visual Arts Award will be granted following a juried selection process that is based upon artistic merit of the original work submitted and the applicant s potential for a visual arts career, not financial need. Eligibility An applicant must meet all of the following criteria: Be a Montgomery County resident; Be enrolled full-time during the fall of 2016 and spring of 2017 of their senior year in a public or nonpublic high school located in Montgomery County. Home-schooled students are also eligible to apply; and Be graduating in the spring of What are the visual arts disciplines? The work submitted must demonstrate the applicant s proficiency in one or more of the following visual arts disciplines: Painting, including but not limited to acrylic, oil, watercolor, and tempera Drawing, including but not limited to etching, charcoal, and pencil Photography Original computer-generated images Mixed media, including fabrics and fiber Sculpture, including glass Pottery 2017 Haimovicz Award Guidelines Page 2

3 Evaluation Criteria Applications for the Haimovicz Award are evaluated based on the extent to which each application addresses, and aligns with, the award objectives and the following criteria: Applicant s goals and overall potential for a visual arts career (25 points) Demonstrates commitment to the artistic discipline Provides clear statement of goals for a visual arts career Outlines specific steps that the applicant has taken or will take to achieve these goals Applicant s extracurricular activities (25 points) Demonstrates high level of involvement and depth in visual arts related and/or other extracurricular activities Strong foundation and proficiency in the medium (25 points) Applicant presents high quality work sample in a professional manner Description of skills and technique used and learning objectives Originality and creativity in work samples (25 points) Work sample demonstrates creativity, originality, and strong conceptualization Description of work samples reflects themes and patterns present in the artwork The Online Application The application and the support materials must be submitted online at no later than Friday, October 14, 2016 at 11:59 pm. Returning users: click on Log In and enter your username and password to access your account. Application Required Materials Your completed Haimovicz Application includes: 1. Portfolio Images (Maximum size per file: 25 MB) Upload a portfolio of images of original works that you have created in the past two years. The images must: i. Be accompanied by an image number, title of work, medium, and dimensions of the original artwork (unframed) 2017 Haimovicz Award Guidelines Page 3

4 ii. iii. iv. Be in focus and show work photographed on a solid background if possible Be of finished work (work does not need to be matted or framed) Be in.jpg,.jpeg,.gif or.png format. 2. High School Transcript Upload one copy of your current high school transcript, verified by original signature of your guidance counselor and uploaded to the appropriate page in PDF format. Home-schooled applicants may have their current high school transcript signed by their primary instructor if a guidance counselor is not available. This signature verifies that the applicant s grades are the most-up-to-date and that they are on track to graduate with a high school diploma in the spring of Transcripts will be used by AHCMC staff to verify eligibility and confirm that the applicant is on track to graduate with a high school diploma in the spring of Transcripts will not be sent to the jury and will not be used as part of the evaluation process. 3. Home Schooling Notification Form (required for home-schooled students only) All home-schooled applicants must submit a Home Schooling Notification Form signed by a parent or guardian to indicate their intent to home-school their child and to comply with Maryland State Department of Education home-schooling regulations. Not Accepted The following will not be accepted: 1. Work that was created by someone other than the applicant 2. Incomplete submissions 3. Late application materials 4. Documents submitted outside the online application Award Notifications All applicants will be notified by of the jury decision during the first week of December The Online Application Process All applications for the Ida F. Haimovicz Visual Arts Award must be submitted online at Log on to your online account using your username and password. 5 Once you have created your online account and agreed to the terms and conditions, you will be able to access the application portal. Select Apply to the Ida F. Haimovicz Visual Arts Award to access the application form. Use the next or previous buttons to both save and navigate through your application. Award Recipient Responsibility Before you apply, please learn about the Award Condition, Exhibition Timeline, and Award Recipient Responsibilities below: 1. The applicant understands and agrees that he/she will honor the following obligations as conditions for accepting the award: The exhibit will take place in the Betty Mae Kramer Gallery and Music Room located in the Silver Spring Civic Building, One Veterans Place, Silver Spring, MD The award recipient must agree to bring their art ready to show or ready to hang no later than Monday, March 6, Art work delivered after this date or delivered not ready for showing or hanging may be disqualified. Exhibition dates: Friday, March 10 Friday, May 5, 2017 Award Presentation and Opening Reception: Friday, March 10, 2017 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. The award recipient must agree to attend the opening reception and presentation of the award. This award presentation will take place at the same time as the Class of 2017 Fran Abrams Creative Writing Award presentation. The award recipient is responsible for picking up their artwork on Monday, May 8, The Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County reserves the right to produce one slide from the award recipient s submission, at the Council s expense, for use in publicizing the Award Presentation event and other ACHMC events. The AHCMC agrees to credit the award recipient by name and include copyright symbol on the artwork. The AHCMC will not use the recipient s artwork to monetary advantage. 3. The Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County reserves the right to publish the name of the recipient and his/her high school in press releases to publicize the Ida F. Haimovicz Visual Arts Award. Application Preparation Assistance AHCMC staff will provide assistance to those applying for the Ida F. Haimovicz Visual Arts Award.
