1 3-DAY DUAL LANGUAGE ENRICHMENT TRAINING INSTITUTE The three-day Dual Language Enrichment Training Institute will provide an overview of the purpose, research, and philosophy behind Dual Language Education. Participants will understand how to implement individual components of the Dallas ISD Dual Language Model in order to help students develop bi-literacy and bilingualism. Note: This course cannot be used to satisfy compensatory time/mandatory training requirements. Participants will receive extra-duty pay at the rate of $20 per hour for attending this session. Staff Development Credit: 21.0 Hours Stipend PD Credit 20-JUN JUN :00-16:00 TBD F A MATHEMATICAL JOURNEY THRU CHILDREN'S LIT FOR SECONDARY ELI/ESL/SHELTERED TCHRS Participants will discover how to use literature as a springboard to bring math alive for English Language Learners. Math activities stemming from the story lines of children s books will be presented. Participants will receive extra-duty pay at the rate of $20 per hour for attending this session. Secondary ELI, ESL, and Sheltered Classroom Teachers 28-JUL JUL :00-16:00 SCHOOL SUPPORT SERVICE CENTER F BILINGUAL LEARNING CENTERS, GRADES PK-2 The three-day Dual Language Bilingual Learning Centers will provide an overview of the purpose and role of Bilingual Learning Centers in the Dual Language classroom. Teachers will learn how to facilitate, organize, and manage effective bilingual learning centers. Suggested materials and activities will be shared through hands-on practice in setting up a model classroom. Teachers will have an opportunity to network with new and experienced teachers in the district. The three day session will NOT count toward mandatory professional development hours. Participants will receive extra-duty pay at the rate of $20 per hour for attending this session. Payment will be provided only to those teachers attending three complete days of training. Due to limited space, only teachers who have not previously attended this training should register. Teachers will learn how to facilitate, organize, and manage effective Bilingual Resource Centers. Teachers will have an opportunity to network with new and experienced teachers in the district. The two-day session will NOT count toward mandatory professional development hours. Participants will receive extra-duty pay at the rate of $20 per hour for attending this session. Payment will be provided only to those teachers attending two complete days of training. Participants will also learn how to use bilingual journal writing activities using the language of the day. This course cannot be used to satisfy compensatory time/mandatory training requirements. This two-day session will provide hands-on resources and tools to improve Spanish literacy instruction for students in grades PK-1. Session 1 will address Listening and Speaking, Phonological Awareness, and Concepts of Print and Letter-Sound Relationships. Session 2 will address Fluency, Comprehension, and Written Expression. This updated version also includes Revised PK Guidelines, Revised SLAR TEKS and ELPS. Please be aware that materials and information provided will be in Spanish. Participants must attend both days. Please make sure that you bring a 2 inch binder. This course cannot be used to satisfy compensatory time/mandatory training requirements. 3 EQUALIZE THE LEARNING GAME W/GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS SEC. ELI/ESL/SHELTERED MATH Graphic organizers have been used successfully in other subjects to assist students with difficulties. Applying graphic organizers to math procedures like fractions, geometry, and algebra may address low performance. Participates will make several foldables that can be folded and unfolded to reveal facts and questions about geometry, integers, fractions, and factors that can be used with English Language Learners. Participants will receive extra-duty pay at the rate of $20 per hour for attending this session. Participants will create content-specific graphics to engage English Language Learners and support them in academic achievement. Participants will receive extra-duty pay at the rate of $20 per hour for attending this session. 4 INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOKS/SHELTERED CLASS: SCAFFOLDING CONTENT FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS This 7-hour session will show content area teachers how Interactive Notebooks, when used properly, can play an integral role in scaffolding content for English Language Learners. The session will show how to use the student created, teacher directed Interactive Notebook as a place for students to effectively record learning and develop proficiency with academic language. In using this tool as a scaffold for ELL s, teachers will actually be engaging ALL students actively and creating their own text for rigorous instruction. This is a research based strategy that will help facilitate the participation of ELL s in your classroom thus improving their ability to learn content. Participants will receive extra-duty pay at the rate of $20 per hour for attending this session.
