Part A - Teaching and Examination Regulations Master s Programmes Faculty of Economics and Business Article 2.5 Admission procedure for Master s study programmes for students who obtained their Bachelor s and/or Master s degree outside the FEB. 1. The Graduate School Directors are responsible for admitting students who obtained their Bachelor s and/or Master s diploma outside the FEB (transfer students) to Master s study programmes. They will seek appropriate advice from the Programme Directors. 2. With a view to admitting students to the Master s programme, the Graduate School Director will allow the knowledge, insight and skills of the candidate to be evaluated, if required. This evaluation shall include the candidate s command of the language in which the programme is to be taught. In addition to asking for written evidence of the study programmes taken, the Director may allow experts within or outside the university to test specific types of knowledge, insight and skills. A GMAT is compulsory for Business Studies Master applicants who do not hold a Dutch Bachelor s or Master s degree. A GRE test is compulsory for all Business Economics and Economics Studies Master applicants who do not hold a Dutch Bachelor s or Master s degree. 3. The entrance examination is held once a year for admission from the first semester onwards ( 1 September ). 4. An application for admission to the study programme must be submitted to the FEB Admission Office in the form of a digital registration by 1 April 2013 (students from non-eu countries) or 1 May 2013 (students from EU countries) or 1 July 2013(students with a Dutch diploma). In special cases, a request submitted after the closing date may be considered. The Graduate School Directors may establish an order of priority among the submitted applications based on the knowledge, understanding and skills of those applying. 5. Admission is granted on condition that, by 1 August 2013 at the latest, the candidate has fulfilled the provisions of Article 2.1 regarding knowledge and skills, as evidenced by the diplomas that he/she has obtained for completed programmes. 6. Admission to a study programme is possible only if the Faculty has provided proof of admission for the (specialisation within the) appropriate study programme to the UvA Central Student Administration. Such proof of admission shall be issued if the student meets the relevant requirements as laid down in Article Candidates receive either confirmation of admission or a negative decision. An appeal against a negative decision can be lodged with the Examination Appeals Board. Article 2.6 Admission procedure to Master s study programmes for FEB Bachelor graduates and FEB pre-master s students 1. Admitting students who have completed a Pre-Master s and/or Bachelor s study programme at the FEB is the duty of the Graduate School Directors. 2. Admission to a study programme is only possible starting the first semester ( 1 September ) and the second semester ( 1 February ). 1 September is the official intake date for all Master s study programmes. For the International Management and Marketing specialisations of the Master s programme in Business Studies only, an official intake date of 1 February also applies, offering a feasible study programme which can be completed within one year and which enables the student to spread the workload evenly throughout the academic year. 3. For a student to be admitted to a Master s programme, he/she must have completed the Bachelor s programme or pre-master s programme allowing admission to the subsequent study programme (specialisation). 4. In addition to the official intake dates specified in Paragraph 2 of this Article, admission to a study programme on 1 February is possible for the Master s study programmes in Accountancy & Control, in Actuarial Science and Mathematical Finance, in Econometrics, and in Fiscal Economics, but only if the requirement stipulated in Paragraph 3 of this Article has been met. In this case, however, a feasible study programme and an even distribution of the workload cannot be guaranteed. Admission as of 1 February is not possible for the Master s study programme in Business Economics, or for the Master s study programme in Economics. 5. Admission to a study programme is possible only if the Faculty's Student Administration has provided proof of admission for the (specialisation within the) appropriate study programme to the UvA Central Student Administration. Such proof of admission shall be issued if the student meets the relevant requirements as laid down in Article

Part A - Teaching and Examination Regulations Master s Programmes Faculty of Economics and Business Chapter 3 Content and organisation of the programme Article 3.1 Aim of the programme and exit qualifications The objective and the knowledge, skills and attitude related exit qualifications for the Master s study programmes are specified in Chapter 1 to 8 of part B (Paragraph 1 of each Chapter). Article 3.2 Organisation of the programme Each study programme is a full-time programme. Article 3.3 Language of instruction for the programme 1. With the exception of Fiscal Economics, all Master s study programmes will be taught in English. The Code of Conduct for Foreign Languages at the UvA 2000 and the provisions laid down in Section 7.2 of the Act will apply. Consequently, teaching will be provided and examinations conducted in English. Contrary to this provision, Dutch may be used if both the lecturer and all students have sufficient command of the Dutch language. 2. The Master s study programme Fiscal Economics is provided in Dutch. This means that oral teaching is provided and examinations are conducted in Dutch. Contrary to this provision, English may be used for teaching provided in the form of a guest lecture by a non-dutch speaking lecturer or if the specific nature, content or quality of the teaching, or the origin of the students necessitates such. The digital UvA Course Catalogue will annually specify for each course whether the instruction will be in English and/or the interim and other examinations will be conducted in English. 3. The Master s theses for the English study programmes specified in Paragraph 1 of this Article must be written in English. Provided he/she has sufficient command of the Dutch language, a lecturer may decide to allow a Dutch-speaking student to write his/her Master s thesis in Dutch. In the event that permission is granted for the Master s thesis of a Master s study programme provided in English to be written in Dutch, an English summary must be added. Article 3.4 Scope of the programme Credits are awarded according to the European Credit and Transfer Accumulation System (ECTS). The study programme has a workload of 60 ECTS credits and is completed with a Master of Science examination. Article 3.5 Curriculum 1. The curricula for the Master s study programmes are specified in Chapter 1 till 8 (Paragraph 2 of each Chapter) 2. The courses for each study programme are determined annually and are published in the digital UvA Course Catalogue. For each course is available in the digital UvA Course Catalogue a description containing the entry requirements, the course content, the objectives, the teaching format, the assessment method and rules concerning mandatory attendance (if applicable). 3. Each Master s study programme requires that a Master s thesis be written. The Master s thesis must meet the requirements specified in the Regulations Governing Master s Theses (see Appendix A) and in the digital UvA Course Catalogue under the specific thesis programme component description. 4. The elective courses within the Master s programme must be provided at Master s level and should be relevant to the study programme. 5. Programme components that are completed elsewhere during the period that the student is enrolled for a Master s study programme at the FEB, can only be included in the student s study programme with prior permission from the Examinations Board. 5

Part A - Teaching and Examination Regulations Master s Programmes Faculty of Economics and Business 6. For the Master s programme to include electives taken at another UvA faculty or another university in the Netherlands or at a university abroad, each of the following requirements must at least be met: a. the course must be provided at Master s level and should be relevant to the study programme; b. the course is successfully completed elsewhere during the period that the student is enrolled for a Master s study programme at the FEB; c. the Programme Director for the study programme in question has provided the Examinations Board with a positive recommendation; d. a minimum of 45 credits is attained within the FEB Master s study programme; e. there is no substantial overlap between the course concerned and any other courses in the Master s study programme or the Bachelor s study programme admitting the student to the Master s programme. 7. In exceptional cases, the Examinations Board may allow one or more courses of other university Master s programmes to be included as a substitute for Master s courses provided by the FEB. The unit must correspond in terms of content, depth and workload with the FEB Master s course in respect of which substitution is requested. The requirements specified in Paragraphs 5 and 6 must also be met. 8. In case the component as mentioned in Paragraph 5, 6 and 7, is part of another Master s degree programme for which the student is registered, the component will be inserted with an exemption in the second Master s degree programme of the student with prior permission from the Examinations Board. The rules for exemptions laid down in Article 5.10 apply in this situation. Article 3.6 Special programmes The Double degree programmes in Econometrics and Mathematics is specified in Chapter 5.7. Chapter 4 Teaching Article 4.1 Participation in courses and rules for priority admission 1. Each student must enrol for each course in advance. A student who is enrolled for a course will be automatically enrolled to the lectures, the exams of the course, including the midterm exam, the final exam and the resit. 2. To be allowed to participate in courses, the student must enrol for the course via the Student Information System (SIS) within the period indicated in the Academic Calendar of the Faculty which can be found at the Faculty's student website, and in accordance with procedures mentioned there. If the student fails to enrol in time, he/she can register for a course (incl the exams) by paying 95 for each course at the Student Desk until the second monday of the course period. Permission for late registration will be given only if there are places available in the course. The fee for late registration will be waived for the first request for late registration during his/her studies at the faculty. 3. If timely registration is not possible due to the fact that the result of an examination that is an entry requirement for the course has not yet been registered, the student will not be excluded from the courses and the examinations on condition that the student contacts the Faculty's Student Administration before the registration period ends. 4. In the event that the number of groups for a particular course is insufficient to accommodate the number of students that enrol for that course before teaching commences, the Graduate School Director may exclude students from participation. Students may be excluded on the basis of the following criteria: 6

Part A - Teaching and Examination Regulations Master s Programmes Faculty of Economics and Business a. the student is not enrolled for the programme within which the course concerned is or could be a compulsory programme component; b. the student has enrolled for courses with a workload of more credits than the nominal workload of the study programme for the relevant period. c. Admission to courses with a limited capacity occurs on the basis of previously formulated admissions criteria that are published in the course catalogue. Students who are enrolled in a study programme of which the courses form a compulsory component will always be admitted to the course. 5. Students who are not going to participate in the lectures of a course must deregister through SIS latest Monday of the second week of the teaching period. In Article 5.7 the consequences of failing to deregister can be found. 6. Students can enrol for a maximum of 20 credits for each period. 7. Students cannot change the time of their seminars, unless the student can prove he has other educational obligations at the same time. 8. In the MSc Business Studies, students are allowed to enroll for 1 (one) elective per period. Students will have to apply for placement in the electives of block 4 and 5 before 1 December and for placement in block 1 and 2 before 1 May. Students will receive information on how to apply for placement from the programme director. The programme director will strive to place every student according to their first preferences. If capacity is not sufficient to serve all students, the programme director may place students in an elective of second or third preference. The allocation will be based on motivation for the first preference, the grades for the courses in the first block (for students starting in September) or the fourth block (for students starting in February), and consistency of the study programme. Article 4.2 Sequence and admission requirements 1. There is a prescribed sequence for participation in courses and interim and other examinations in each Master s programme. Students who deviate from this sequence may experience study delay. 2. Participation in the lectures and the examinations is possible only if the student meets the entry requirements for the appropriate course latest on the last day of the registration period for the course. 3. The entry requirements of each course are specified for each study programme in the digital UvA Course Catalogue. 4. In exceptional cases, the Examinations Board may, at the student s reasoned request, deviate from the condition mentioned in Paragraph 2 of this Article, with or without stipulating conditions. 7

Part A - Teaching and Examination Regulations Master s Programmes Faculty of Economics and Business Chapter 5 Testing and examining Article 5.1 General 1. Testing during the course establishes the student s academic skills and whether the student is achieving the intended learning objectives sufficiently. 2. When participating in examinations students are supposed to meet all requirements of the course in the current Academic year. 3. The digital UvA Course Catalogue states what the student must achieve in order to pass the course as well as the criteria for student assessment and the weight of the examinations. 4. At least 60% of the final grade of a course should be based on individual examinations. 5. The Rules and Guidelines for the Examinations Board, laid down in Article 7.12, Paragraph 4 of the WHW, describe the procedures and guidelines for marking and awarding results in interim and other examinations. 6. The Examinations Board may, at the student s request, permit a different form of assessment than that indicated by the digital UvA Course Catalogue. 7. For any course, students are entitled to receive representative exam examples with written interim examinations. The examples are representative in terms of length, type of questions and content. 8. For courses of a study programme judged by a different Faculty, the testing and examining regulations of the appropriate Faculty will apply. 9. Students who participate in a study trip which has been approved by the director of the Graduate School of Business or the Graduate School of Economics are entitled to alternative assignments to meet attendance requirements during the period of the study trip. However, this does not hold for examinations or resits. Article 5.2 Admission to examinations 1. Admission to the examination for a Master s course requires the student to be enrolled for the Master s study programmes at the UvA and to have the prior knowledge required for the course in question. 2. Students enrolled for a Master s study programme satisfy the entry requirements for all courses included in the list of Master s courses for that programme. However, a Master s programme may set entry requirements for the Master s thesis. 3. Students who are enrolled for a course will be automatically enrolled to the lectures and the examinations of the course, including any midterm exam, the final exam and the resit. 4. Students must enrol via the Student Information System (SIS) in accordance with procedures mentioned in Article 4.1 of Chapter 4. If the student fails to enrol in time, he/she will not be allowed to participate in examinations and will not receive an exam result. If timely registration is not possible due to the fact that the result of an obliged examination that took place before the start of the course has not yet been registered, the student will not be excluded from the examinations on condition that the student contacts the Faculty's Student Administration before the registration period ends. 5. Students who will not participate in the examinations of a course must deregister through SIS no later than the Monday of the second week of the teaching period. In Article 5.7 the consequences of failing to deregister can be found. Article 5.3 Testing/examination opportunities 1. For every course, the student has one opportunity to resit the test during the same Academic year. The first examination opportunity is within the educational period during which that course is offered; the resit opportunity is provided before the start of the next Academic year. 2. Contrary to the provisions in Paragraph 1 a resit is not provided for partial examinations. 3. Students who are enrolled for a course may always take part in the resit which is organized for the course. In this case, Article 5.7 sub 4 holds. 8

Part A - Teaching and Examination Regulations Master s Programmes Faculty of Economics and Business 4. In the case of a resit, the results obtained for these partial examinations will be disregarded. During a resit, the full course material will be tested. An exception can be made for midterm results of practical assignments. The results of these examinations may also be valid for the resit, on the condition that the resit gives the student a reasonable opportunity to pass the course. In any case the digital UvA Course Catalogue should clearly state the grading policy. 5. In the event that the Master s thesis submitted for assessment within the specified period does not meet the requirements, the student will be allowed one additional opportunity to meet all requirements by improving the assessed work within the specified period. Any such improvement will be considered a resit. Both the result of the first assessment as the result of the resit must be submitted to the Faculty's Student Administration for registration. Article 5.4 Students with a disability 1. Students with a disability may submit a written request to qualify for special adaptations while taking interim or other examinations. These adaptations shall accommodate as much as possible the student s individual disability, but may not alter the quality or degree of difficulty of the examination. The adaptation may include the student being allowed a maximum of thirty minutes longer to complete the examination and/or being allowed to sit the examination in a separate room. 2. The Examinations Board will rule on requests for adaptations with regard to tests and/or examinations. See Article 4.8 of the Rules and Guidelines for the Examinations Board for the procedure and requirements for a request for more time for an examination. Article 5.5 Oral examinations 1. An oral examination is public unless the student files an objection to this, or if, in an exceptional case, the Examinations Board or examiners determines otherwise. 2. An examiner gives an oral examination to only one student at a time unless the examiner and students agree otherwise. 3. At an oral examination two examinators must be present. They determine the result together. 4. The examinators should make a report of the oral examination in which the questions are resumed. Instead of a written report audio recording is allowed as well. The student is not allowed to keep either the written report or the audio recording. Article 5.6 Determining and announcing results 1. The examiners determine the result (= mark) of an oral examination as soon as the examination is finished and informs the student accordingly. The examiners issue the examinee with a written statement of the result. 2. The examiner determines the result (= mark) of a written or other form of examination component as quickly as possible, in any event within thirteen working days of the examination date, and also submits the necessary data to the Faculty's Student Administration so that the results can be registered. At the examiner s request this period can be extended by five working days. Such request must be submitted to the Examinations Board before the examination date. 3. The examiner will submit the examination results in writing to the Faculty's Student Administration. Within two working days of the result being submitted, the Faculty's Student Administration will forward it to those students who had been registered for the examination concerned and who had met the entry requirements for that particular course. 4. The latest date by which students will receive the result of a written exam is stated on the front page of the exam paper. 5. The provisions of Paragraph 2 will not apply in the event of a resit within six weeks of the examination date. The examiner must then establish the result of a written examination within ten working days. 6. A student may lodge an appeal against the result with the Examination Appeals Board within six weeks of the announcement of the result. A student may also submit a request for reassessment to the examiner. A request for reassessment does not affect the time period for lodging an appeal. 9

Part A - Teaching and Examination Regulations Master s Programmes Faculty of Economics and Business Article 5.7 Marks 1. Marks are awarded on a scale of 1 to 10. Only full or half marks may be awarded, with the exception of 5.5. Marks of midterm examinations do not have to be full or half marks. 2. The final assessment of a component is considered to be a pass if a mark of 6.0 or higher is obtained. 3. The mark of the final assessment of a component is round off to one decimal as.0 or The most recent result shall determine the final mark. 5. Should the degree classification or judicium for a particular component not be expressed as a mark, then the result will be all requirements met (AVV) or unsatisfactory (NAV). 6. Students who are registered for a course and who do not attend an examination of the course will receive the result NAP ( not attended with attempt ). NAP is registered as an examination opportunity which may affect a student s opportunity to obtain a cum laude distinction. Article 5.8 Validity period of examinations 1. The validity period of passed examinations for courses of the Master s study programme is three years. 2. Contrary to the provisions of Paragraph 1, a validity period of six years will apply for examinations passed for the courses of the Master s study programme or a pre-master s programme before 1 October Contrary to the provisions of Paragraph 1, a validity period of six years will apply for examinations passed for the courses of the Double degree programme Econometrics and Mathematics (see chapter 5). 4. In individual cases, the Examinations Board is authorised to extend the validity period of successfully passed examinations for a period that it determines. The Programme Director decides about the extension of the validity period of examinations of pre-master s programmes. 5. Contrary to the provisions of Paragraph 1 and 2 the result of partial examinations is valid until the next examination opportunity for the course concerned. In the case of a practical exercise as a partial examination, it may be decided to extend the validity period of the results for this practical exercise until the resit for the course concerned. Article 5.9 Right of inspection 1. In the case of a written examination, the examiner allows the student who took the examination, at his/her request, to inspect the evaluated work up until thirty days after the result has been disclosed. The examiner may determine that such inspection is to take place collectively at a prearranged time and place. The student who took the examination can get a copy of the evaluated work at cost price. 2. How exactly a written interim examination may be inspected is stated on the front page of the exam paper concerned or on the Blackboard site for the appropriate course. 3. Any student who has right of inspection pursuant to Paragraph 1 of this Article and can demonstrate that, due to circumstances beyond their control, he/she cannot or could not be present at the pre-arranged place and time will be offered an alternative opportunity once-only to inspect their evaluated work. 4. During the period stated in the Paragraph 1, any student who has right of inspection pursuant to Paragraph 1 of this Article may inspect the questions and assignments of the interim examination in question and the standards on the basis of which the assessment was made. See Article 4.7 of the Rules and Guidelines for the Examinations Board for more rules and guidelines concerning the right of inspection. 10

Part A - Teaching and Examination Regulations Master s Programmes Faculty of Economics and Business Article 5.10 Exemption 1. A maximum of 18 credits in the Master s curriculum may be accumulated through granted exemptions. 3. Contrary to the provisions of Article 1 no exemptions shall be granted for courses which were also components of the Bachelor s and/or Master s study programme that allowed the student in question admission to the Master s study programme. 4. In addition to the maximum specified in Paragraph 2 of this Article, the Examinations Board may grant further exemptions of up to 18 credits on the grounds of the same components studied via Short Higher Education (KHO) at the FEB, provided that the student met the entry requirements for that Master s study programme at the time that he/she sat the examination in question via KHO. 5. No exemption shall be granted for the Master's thesis. 6. The Examinations Board decides within twenty eight days of receiving the written request. See Article 6 of the Rules and Guidelines for the Examinations Board for more rules and guidelines concerning exemptions. Article 5.11 Thesis The Master s thesis supervisor and a second reader assess the quality of the final thesis. The final mark is determined by the supervisor after consultation with the second reader. Further regulations regarding supervision and evaluation are set out in the Regulations for Master s Theses FEB (Appendix A) and in the digital UvA Course Catalogue under the specific thesis programme component. Article 5.12 Fraud and plagiarism 1. The provisions of the Regulations Governing Fraud and Plagiarism for UvA Students apply in full and form part of the Teaching and Examination Regulations. The text of the Regulations Governing Fraud and Plagiarism for UvA Students is attached as Appendix C. 2. The need to detect plagiarism in texts makes the use of electronic detection programs permissible. When the student hands in the text, he/she implicitly permits inclusion of the text in the database of the relevant detection program. Article 5.13 Final examination 1. The Examinations Board determines the results and date of the Master s examination after it has established that the student has passed all examination components. 2. A student needs a sufficient grade for all courses in order to pass the examination. 3. The Examinations Board may award a degree classification, or judicium. If the student has shown exceptional capacity, the Examinations Board may decide to add the qualification cum laude to his/her degree certificate; the criteria for such are set out in the Rules and Guidelines for the Examinations Board (see, Article 5.4). 4. The Executive Board has established twelve examination dates for the Master s examination for each Academic year. 5. A diploma can only be awarded after the student has satisfied all the requirements, including the payment of tuition fees. 6. Following a reasoned request by a student who qualifies for being awarded a diploma, the Examinations Board may delay setting the date of the final examination. Article 5.14 Degree Students who have successfully completed their Master's examination are awarded a Master of Science degree. The degree awarded is stated on the diploma. 11

Part A - Teaching and Examination Regulations Master s Programmes Faculty of Economics and Business Article 5.15 Diplomas and transcripts 1. The Examinations Board grants a diploma as proof that the student has passed his/her final examination. The Examinations Board also grants a diploma supplement in English, signed by the chair of the Examinations Board, indicating the courses of the examination, the workload and the assessment. 2. If a student has successfully passed more than one interim or other examination but the Examinations Board cannot grant him/her a diploma, he/she may request and receive from the Board a transcript listing, in any event, the interim or other examinations passed. Chapter 6 Academic student counselling and study progress Article 6.1 Study progress administration The Dean of the Faculty is responsible for the correct registration of the students study results. He/she ensures that the study results are registered in such a way that every student can receive a summary of his/her study results at least once per Academic year. In addition to this, SIS shows the registered assessment of the examination component, allowing all students to view their results electronically. Article 6.2 Study supervision 1. Enrolled students, with the exception of extraneï (external students who may take examinations and use library and laboratory facilities but who may not attend lectures or apply for study grants), are eligible for academic student counselling. The types of academic student counselling available can be found in the digital UvA Course Catalogue. 2. Students can lodge a complaint about the procedure followed by the FEB or with regard to the situation at the FEB. The complaints procedure is set out in Appendix B. Article 6.3 Unsuitability (Judicium Abeundi) 1. Based on the provisions of Section 7.42a of the Act, the dean ot the Examinations Board may, in exceptional cases, ask the Executive Board to terminate or refuse a student`s enrolment in a programme, if that student`s actions or remarks show that he/she is unsuitable either for practicing one or more of the professions for which the programme in question is preparing the student or for the practical preparation for professional practice. 2. If a student is suspected of being unsuitable as described in paragraph 1, the Examinations Board or the dean will institute an inquiry, of which the student will be informed immediately. The Examinations Board or the dean will not issue any recommendation without carefully considering the interests involved and giving the student the opportunity to be ehard. 12
