3 - German : basic. - Taiwanese (Hokkien) : basic. PH.D. THESIS SUMMARY The Building of a National Passion. An Anthropology of Baseball in Taiwan. Introduced to Taiwan during the Japanese Period ( ), baseball is associated with the Japanese colonial assimilation project at the turn of the 1920s. It is then exploited by the Chinese Nationalist regime who took possession of the island in the aftermath of World War II, before taking refuge there in 1949, driven out of China by the Maoist forces. Being part of the program of physical culture of the Kuomintang, it becomes a privileged place of national mobilization for the reconquest of the continent and the building of a multi-ethnic nation-state. Aboriginal children are particularly encouraged to participate in competitive baseball school where they are supposed to represent the exemplary moral values of a society predominantly Han. They reside throughout the year in dormitories where they build their identity primarily around their community of practice. This ascetic lifestyle is essential to professional players who must manage with the hectic pace of the seasons. They are concerned with the same constraints of exemplarity but face widespread corruption related to their social networks. Supporters, who build their club membership through the values they represent, must deal with the recurring scandals affecting their stars. They support during the match by the implementation of noisy and colourful animation. Baseball is thus at the center of local and national issues. It is part of globalization as a symbol of the existence of a Taiwanese (or Chinese) nation. Claimed by supporters of Taiwan independence and those of reunification with China, baseball is a national passion that feeds tensions between the two major opposing ideologies and works as the privileged place of their dialogue. From ethnographic data collected in the field, these logics will be considered at the confluence of history and anthropology, as well as through micro-strategies implemented daily by the actors to circumvent and to reappropriate social norms.
