2 a place of safety and sanctuary An introduction to Pele Tower Pele Towers were fortified houses built long ago to provide a place of safety and sanctuary in times of danger. That s why we think it s a great name for our supported therapeutic housing and community service - today, when someone s life has been chaotic and they are experiencing mental ill health, a place of safety and sanctuary can be the first step on their journey to recovery. Pele Tower is part of Richmond Fellowship, one of the largest voluntary sector providers of mental health services in England. We have more that 15 years experience of supporting people with personality disorder and associated mental health problems and in particular have a wealth of experience in working with individuals with borderline personality disorder. Our unique, structured therapeutic support can help stabilise lives without intensive use of medical and psychiatric services. At Pele Tower we recognise we re only one part of someone s recovery journey and we work closely with those agencies who may already be providing support to an individual to ensure a smooth transition into our services. Just as importantly, we work with our tenants and those who access our community services to make a smooth move out of Pele Tower and into independent living. In 2012/13 100% of our tenants completed their residency with a planned move-on and a significant number went on to volunteering, further and higher education and employment.

3 Why we get results We put the person at the heart of everything we do we recognise that everyone s recovery journey is different and we tailor the support we give to the individual, who is fully involved in planning their care. We have a track record of making a difference in 2012/ per cent of our tenants completed their residency with a planned move-on and a significant number went on to volunteering, further and higher education and employment. We reduce pressure on acute hospitals following a placement with us, hospital admissions for individuals reduce dramatically and for some are no longer necessary at all. We offer value for money commissioners can save anything from between 62,000 and 200,000 a year by placing individuals with us. We are a member of the Community of Communities accredited by the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Pele Tower success stories... Jane had spent 28 years in and out of hospital and had been in hospital for a whole year before moving to Pele Tower. During her 15 month residency with our therapeutic community she only needed inpatient hospital support once. She is now volunteering in the community where she hopes to make her home when she leaves Pele Tower.

4 Our personalised approach We believe that the most effective way to assess, provide and review someone s needs is to use a recovery approach. This ensures that individuals are at the very centre of identifying their own support needs and are fully involved in all decisions made. Every individual that comes to Pele Tower has a named key worker who supports them to develop action plans and who is the contact point for other professionals and services they are involved with. The key worker has regular one to one sessions with the individual which are focussed on developing realistic goals for the short, medium and longer term. There are also regular sessions with the other members of the Pele Tower team so people have the opportunity to discuss day to day issues affecting them. We take a holistic approach to managing risks around individuals and work with them to develop protection and safety plans which are reviewed on a regular basis. We offer a range of flexible packages of support that can be tailored to the individual.

5 Our packages Residential - We provide 24hr supported accommodation coupled with an intensive programme of therapeutic and housing support. This is provided through a full timetable of daily group activities and individual sessions which are designed to support tenants to identify negative behaviours and develop coping strategies and healthier responses. A typical residency lasts two years but this can be flexible depending on an individual s needs. In the last six months of someone s stay, we put increased emphasis on working with them to develop appropriate plans for moving on and to find suitable accommodation. Aftercare - We help people in the transition from supported housing into independent living. This support is available to all our tenants who have completed their residential programme. It involves attending our service twice weekly for a minimum of 12 months and taking part in therapeutic group and individual activities. Community services - Our community services are designed to provide a structured therapeutic programme of activity in a group setting which helps to build an individual s independent living skills and confidence, and to reduce social isolation. The length of a placement is dependent on the person s individual needs and can be accessed Monday-Friday. In-reach - Our in-reach service is available for individuals who are in prison or hospital. Skilled members of our team can provide regular visits to offer support and information prior to someone s release or discharge. They can raise awareness and understanding about Pele Tower and give individuals the opportunity to develop positive relationships with our staff. This can help smooth the move from a secure or inpatient setting into our therapeutic community. Personalisation - We can offer a range of additional services such as telephone and floating support and personalised technology for people in their own tenancies through direct payments.

6 Our facilities and staff We have recently moved into newly refurbished premises in North Shields in North Tyneside. We offer eight beds, some with ensuite facilities. We have communal lounges, kitchens, dining areas and enclosed private gardens. We also have eight places available at any one time on our community services programme. Pele Tower has good access to the local shopping areas, community facilities and public transport routes. staff are on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week Our staff are on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our highly experienced and qualified team includes support workers and a group psychotherapist. They all have a wide range of skills, qualifications and experience which allows us to provide a very comprehensive service. Team members hold qualifications in psychology, social work, community and youth work, occupational therapy, health and social care, and teaching. Pele Tower success stories... Sam came to Pele Tower having spent the majority of the last five years in hospital. During her time with us she significantly reduced her admissions into hospital and had no admissions in the six months prior to leaving or since moving on from our therapeutic community. She recently graduated from university and is working voluntarily while she seeks full time employment.

7 Referrals and funding We accept referrals from health and social care professionals, probation teams and prison resettlement teams. Following a referral but before someone starts using our services, we carry out a comprehensive assessment. This involves: an interview with a senior member of the Pele Tower team a full risk assessment a meeting with our psychotherapist to establish an individual s suitability for group therapy an informal meeting with other tenants to find out more about being part of a therapeutic community For those on a residential placement, we undertake a six-week assessment process to ensure the therapeutic environment is going to be right for them. This begins with attending some of our community services and gradually builds up to some overnight stays until they are living at Pele Tower full time. For those joining our community services, the assessment can be carried out in a shorter timescale. Once an assessment has been completed, we make a decision with the individual and their care co-ordinator about whether a placement at Pele Tower is right for them. Funding for our support packages usually comes from the local authority or health authority where the individual usually lives. It is the responsibility of the care co-ordinator to source and apply for funding, which must be in place before the assessment process can begin.
