22 Business with Economics BA (Hons) This programme is part of the Business with...suite of programmes featured on page 25, with the opportunity to study Economics as a specialism as part of the degree. It can offer you the ultimate in flexibility if you are eager to enter the world of business but also hold a particular interest in the economic focused roles. What s it all about? The Business with Economics degree programme has been designed to give you a general business degree that is supplemented with an insight into the theories of economics which is ideal for those students who don t want to specialise fully in economics and want to study general business topics too. The programme introduces students to the world of Business whilst allowing students to combine key business subjects with functional elements in Economics. In the third year you can opt to undertake an organisational work placement before returning to University to complete your final year of study. What makes this programme different? Joining the Business with Economics degree, you will clearly have an interest in Economics, but also be keen to learn about a range of other business topics. As economics A level is not a pre requisite, the subject can be very new to some students. Fortunately, the whole ethos of the Business with...suite, in which this programme sits, allows students choice in their field of study, and enables them to delay the final decision of their pathway choice until Year 2. So if students wish to, they may change their pathway specialism from Economics to one of the others on offer. What can I do afterwards? Graduates from this programme have a good employment record. As this programme gives you both a general and specialist insight into business, management and economics, graduates are equipped to enter the workplace ready to undertake a range of careers. As a recent graduate you should expect to go onto Banking, Business Analysis, Insurance, Business Consultancy and Economic modelling careers within industry, commerce and the public sector. Recent example employers include Marks and Spencer, Harrods, Euro Money and the Ministry of Finance. Students have also gone on to establish successful small businesses. What will I study? YEAR 1...modern business and management and an intro to Economics Business Processes and Systems Financial Decision Making International Business Environment Management Solving Business Problems Economics YEAR 2...the main functional areas of business and Economics. Global and International Business Contexts Personal and Organisational Development Intermediate Microeconomics Business Performance Management Markets and Customers Intermediate Macroeconomics YEAR 3 Optional placement or work / study abroad year YEAR 4...strategic management and more in depth Economics modules Applied Business Ethics Strategic Management and Leadership Economics of Development Markets and Competition Culture and Organisations Dissertation 22

23 Student Profile David Martin BA (Hons) Business with Economics What appealed to you about Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University? I was first attracted because of the University s excellent graduate employability statistics. Northumbria offers a wide array of courses, plus Newcastle itself is renowned for its student culture! What was it about the course that particularly appealed? Business with Economics appealed to me as I studied both subjects at A-Level and have an interest in both. The career opportunities in this area are so diverse and the course gave me the opportunity to sample different areas of business. What did you like most about the programme? The standard of teaching is exceptional and all lecturers have excellent knowledge in their subject areas. The programme is very diverse allowing different areas of business and economics to be studied. What do you do when you re not studying? When I am not studying I am usually in the gym in Sports Central or socialising with friends, I am also the course representative for Business with Economics. What are your career ambitions for the future? I have just been accepted onto the Hewlett-Packard Project Management Graduate Scheme. After completion of this role I hope to become a project manager within the company. Ultimately I aspire to become part of the senior management team or open my own company and become my own boss. Have your ambitions changed since starting the programme? I always had the ambition of setting up and running my own company so in that respect my aspirations have not changed. What three words would you use to summarise your time here? Rewarding, meticulous, banter! Do you have any advice for anyone applying for your course? I wholeheartedly recommend Northumbria as it has provided me with great memories which I will cherish. I recommend staying in halls in first year as it is the best place to meet friends. 23

24 Student Profile Georgina Irving BA (Hons) Business with Marketing What appealed to you about Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University? Newcastle Business School offers an impressive learning environment; the school provides for all learning needs. What was it about the course that particularly appealed? I wanted to attain a degree that would offer a wide range of career opportunities and the Business with courses facilitated this. The University also provided ongoing support with overseas programmes and internships to build each student s employability. What did you like most about the programme? The programme tapped into lots of different areas of business and therefore I feel that my business knowledge is not limited to marketing. Northumbria recognises the importance of building rounded business graduates. What do you do when you re not studying? I have been involved in marketing related volunteer programmes arranged by the business school and also a weekend job. Keeping a good balance was key to my three years at Northumbria. What are your career ambitions for the future? I would really like to be in a marketing related career that enables me to explore different geographical regions and exposes me to fresh challenges. Have your ambitions changed since starting the programme? Certainly, I was not particularly academic at school and having taken a gap year I assumed that I would return to travelling once I completed my degree. However Northumbria gave me the confidence in my own ability, I achieved a place on the Dean s List last year and now have much higher hopes for my career path. How do you get on with your tutors? Very well. I found that the tutors were always on hand to help to give advice and support. What three words would you use to summarise your time here? Challenging, rewarding, happy. Do you have any advice for anyone applying for your course? You really do get as much out of university as you put into it. 24
