1 UK Poultry Exports UK OVERVIEW: The overall volume of UK exports of poultry to third countries fell 11.4% in compared with. In terms of value this only equated to a drop of around 0.03%. However, looking at UK poultry exports to third countries in compared to, there was a 120.3% increase in volume, equivalent to a 152.3% in value, by far the greatest increase in both volume and value of the EU s top poultry exporters by volume (UK, France, Belgium, Germany and The Netherlands). The volume of UK poultry exports to the EU increased in compared to by 2.3% although in value terms there was a fall of 2.4%. Looking at total poultry exports to EU and Non-EU countries there was a 1.7% drop in volume and 2% drop in value from to. However, looking back compared to there was a 12.5% increase in volume and 28.4% increase in value. The small decline in UK exports to third countries must be seen in the context of the grain crisis, exchange rate pressures, and changes to 3 rd country import practices. The UK has tended to export the largest quantities of poultry to Hong Kong and so the tightening of borders in Hong Kong during has had the greatest impact on overall UK export figures as it has for the US, Brazil and other EU countries. GLOBAL TRENDS: There have been lower EU exports to Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, China and Vietnam in (USDA GAIN Report 09/) Competition from Brazil and Thailand has pushed prices down Grain crisis has made production costs higher in Europe Exchange rates/eurozone crisis Hong Kong tightening of borders. According to USDA Hong Kong overall imports fell whilst Chinese imports rose which supports the need to focus on opening the Chinese market to poultrymeat exports. Vietnam changes to introduction of import reference prices Growing self-sufficiency in Russia is reducing demand for imports. Ukraine is looking to increase its poultry exports N.B: It must also be noted that part of UK growth in poultry exports which goes via other Member States is masked as it is not possible to retrieve figures for these. In this context UK poultry meat exports are doing reasonably well. 1

4 TOP EU EXPORTERS: France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the UK are the top EU poultry meat exporters in volume terms. France has seen significant exports to the Middle East (UAE, Jordan, Oman, and Saudi Arabia) since where the other top exporters have not. Exports to this region are predominantly of frozen, whole birds which differ to the types of poultry exported from the UK and other EU countries. Exports to Benin and Russia have also seen strong volume growth. 5 THE NETHERLANDS Overall The Netherlands poultry exports to third countries grew by 4% in volume terms. The Netherlands has seen significant growth in poultry exports to several African nations including Benin, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, and South Africa since. Poultry exports to South Africa rose by 57% between and from 36366t to 56945t. The Netherlands has also seen strong growth in exports to Malaysia (+41%) and The Philippines (+19%) since. 7 GERMANY Overall German exports to third countries rose 13.1% from to, with substantial increases in exports to both Ukraine and South Africa. Exports to Ukraine rose 54% from to 24967t. Exports to South Africa rose 980% from 1969t to 21253t. Germany also saw a significant fall in exports to Russia (-59%) from 29328t to 11929t. 8 UK Even though Germany increased exports to South Africa considerably, the UK still exported more than Germany and managed to increase volume exports by 7.6% from 24850t to 26744t. Poultry exports to South Africa accounted for the largest portion of UK poultry export value (34.2%). Hong Kong accounted for 25.1%, Benin 8%, Ukraine 6.6%, Ghana 5.8% and Russia 3.3% in value terms. Compared to the other top EU poultry exporters the UK has the lowest number of destinations where more than 1% of poultrymeat exports are sent. Belgium and The Netherlands in particular have a wider spread of destinations. UK poultry exports seem to focus more on particular markets such as South Africa and Hong Kong where a high percentage of poultry export value is derived. This means that total UK poultry meat exports are more vulnerable to fluctuations resulting from changes in these focus markets. France is similar to the UK with less spread in export destinations with a focus on exports to Saudi Arabia.
