1 MASTER IN International Horticulture Science IMaHS (European Master) (subject to ministerial approval) Academic year 2013/2014 The Faculty of Science and Technology offers, starting from the academic year 2013/2014 the Master in "International Horticulture Science" established jointly at the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna, Department of Agricultural Sciences or the School of Agriculture and veterinary Medicine (administrative seat of course). The course is an "European Masters" (Erasmus Mundus). 2 COURSE DESCRIPTION: The objective of the Master course is to form professional figures able to work in global horticultural markets. The overall aim of project is not only to provide a top level program that highly qualifies graduates to deal with the challenge of modern horticulture, but also to equip them the tools to face the rapid changes occurring at European and worldwide levels. To achieve this goal IMaHS programme will exploit the complementary expertise s of the 8 partners, the unique integrated structure, where all the semesters are jointly offered by two universities, the structural students and scholars mobility and the research-based master thesis. The IMaHS graduates will be highly skilled and specialized, but will have, at the same time, a wide background of knowledge, and, an integrated and holistic approach to problem solving issues. Through IMaHS, the students will receive the knowledge and skills to successfully pursue their careers in national and international organizations (private and public) and also be enabled to pursue an academic career. The scientific objectives are clearly focused on the long term competitiveness of European horticultural industry. The graduates are expected to deal with: 1. management and development of sustainable horticulture, 2. control of production and protection systems; 3. fruit quality and safety control and management 4. storage and supply management systems; 5. value enhancement of genetic diversity in breeding programs, 6. nursery and seed company management; 7. field and greenhouse management; 8. agri-food marketing and management in horticultural companies, 9. Production and exploitation of new active ingredients from medicinal plants, 10. design and management of urban horticulture, 11. Management of tropical and Mediterranean horticulture. A high level of integration in teaching and research among these excellent groups will create a synergism in knowledge and technology transfer and will correspond with the objective to give high benefit for students attending the courses and improve competitiveness of Europe in countries with emerging horticultural industry. FIRST SEMESTER The first semester is offered by all partners. Candidates enrolled in Italy will attend lectures at the University of Bologna (UNIBO) with contribution of FUB teachers. SECOND SEMESTER The second semester is offered and held at TUM-HU and COR-BOKU (depending on the curriculum chosen). The semester at TUM-HU, called "From Genes to Plant", will focus on aspects of biotech-oriented agricultural production and the development of new crops and cropping systems. The semester at COR-BOKU, will concentrate on the physiological aspects of the vegetal production and biotech will be an investigative tool in the study of the interaction between crops and environment. 3 FOURTH SEMESTER The fourth semester is dedicated to practical training (5 ECTS) and the preparation of the thesis (25 ECTS) carried out in co-supervision of a teacher UNIBO-FUB and a teacher of one of the partner universities. ADMISSION AND LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS: To be admitted to the MSc program, the candidate must be in possession of a degree ex DM 270, Class 25: Agricultural Sciences and Technologies and Forestry, ex MD 509, Class 20: Agricultural Sciences and Technologies, agri-food and forestry or equivalent or other qualification obtained abroad and recognized as eligible (180 CFU in Life Science). In addition, since the class is taught entirely in English, all students must have a knowledge of the B2 level or equivalent in the English language.
