The Targets
Why are the grades I get important?
English and Maths A grade 5 or higher in these subjects is still the expected level for 16 year olds It is the passport to many jobs and courses. Without a grade 5 or higher in both you may not be able to go to University. You will have to study the subjects for another year if you do not get a grade 5 or higher
Academic Pathway Level 3 A Level Subjects 5 A*- C / grade 5 GCSE s required including English and Maths Art and Design Biology Business Chemistry Drama English Language English Literature Combined English Mathematics French Geography Graphics History Media Studies Music Psychology Physics Religious Education Sociology 3D Vocational Pathway Level 3 BTEC Courses 4 A* - C / grade 5 GCSE s required BTEC Health and Social Care BTEC Sport BTEC Information Technology BTEC Business BTEC Forensic Science and Criminal Investigation Students can complete a combination of subjects from across both pathways as long as they have met the necessary requirements. 24 I want an apprenticeship You may well need 5 grades A* to C You will need a 5 or higher in Maths You will need a 5 or Higher in English Language Without these grades most apprenticeships will require an extra year of study during which you may well not get paid.

Miss Davis Head of English
Welcome back New GCSEs English Language English Literature Higher expectations I spoke to you last year about the key changes to the English curriculum and how we were preparing your child in Year 10. This evening I am going to discuss how we are working with your child in Year 11. Two exams for each subject you will find an overview of each exam in your packs. This briefly explains the nature of each paper so you can be aware of the questions and the skills that your child will need to demonstrate.
Year 11 We have studied much of the content and we are now in a position where we are revising and practising exam technique. Pupils completed a mock exam last term and they will have another two mock exams just before Christmas. We will continue to use mock exams as an integral part of their preparation during the next 6/7 months. The mock exams have included topics that we have not necessarily revised during lessons, and this is encouraging pupils to ensure they are revising material independently.
What are we doing? In addition to the regular mock exams, we also offer extra revision sessions on a Monday after school. This session is used to revise key areas of concern, and to provide pupils with time to develop and create their own revision resources. We offer drop in sessions during lunch-time, where pupils can come and complete English work, use the computers to gain access to the revision resources, and complete past papers and work on key questions. They can do this with staff on hand to offer extra support and advice.
What are we doing? We have shared, and will continue to share, a range of resources with pupils on our shared internal computer system. Pupils have been told how to access these resources, and it is essential they have a USB stick to enable them to save these resources so they can also use them at home. Resources include revision guides for every exam and texts they have studied for Literature, past papers and mark schemes, exemplar answers, and resources to enable them to revise key skills such as a language glossary.
This term We will be focusing on practising questions during lessons, and this will involve testing pupils on aspects of the four different papers more regularly, so pupils need to ensure they are revising all four papers consistently. We will be delivering more sessions on how to revise specifically for English to aid them with their independent revision. We will be adding more resources and more exemplar answers to our resources file, which pupils will have access to so it is vital that they keep checking this on a regular basis.
This term We will be selling revision guides, which will help provide them with activities to do independently at home. We will be developing materials to use during form time to help pupils work on key areas of improvement. Will be encouraging and supporting the pupils to start creating their own revision resources.
What can your child do? Re-read the texts you have studied for Literature. Revise each exam don t just focus on the paper you are currently studying during lessons. Make sure you are looking at each paper regularly and not just a few days before the exam. Build this into your revision timetable. Make a list of key skills needed for each question on each paper, and highlight those skills you feel you are not very confident with so you can prioritise key areas of concern and seek to get help with these from another pupil or a member of staff.
What can your child do? Make sure you are fully focused and you are completing work and homework to your best standard. Try and ensure you attend all lessons, and if you do miss lessons, ensure you copy up the work. Use your teachers we are here to help and you need to ensure you are talking to us about any concerns you have.
How can you help? Pupils would benefit from having copies of their own texts so they can annotate them and make notes. Guides and notes on the texts are also available to buy from all good book shops. The York notes are particularly helpful for the Literature texts. Encourage your child to re-read the texts they have studied. Ask them about the texts they have studied and the characters or key themes. Support the importance of reading not just the texts they have studied for Literature but also reading non-fiction texts, which will be important for the Language exam.
How can you help? Online articles from broadsheet newspapers are very useful The Guardian, The Telegraph etc. Ask them to summarise the key points of the article for you or comment on the writer s viewpoint and any key language techniques being used to convey that viewpoint. Encourage them to go back through their exercise books and take note of key things they need to improve, including SPAG. Maybe test them on spellings or language techniques from the glossary. Encourage them to attend the extra sessions including lunchtimes and breakfast club.
Mr. Illingworth Head of Year 11

The Context of Attendance Would you think it was acceptable if one of your work colleagues did not come into work once a month? There are only 40 teaching weeks in the school year; there are 12 weeks of holiday. How would you react as supportive parents/carers if your child s teacher was not in school for a week because they were on holiday.
Punctuality Can have just as big an impact; Minutes Late A Day Days Lost Across A School Year
Homework Look at your child s book Can you understand their thinking and rationale? Can they explain it to you? Encourage them to work on their targets Targets are recorded in their books and via your child s interim report. Encourage completion of homework
The Home Partnership : Help at home? Provide a workspace Check progress Help organise their time Attend Parents evenings together Contact the school for any updates and/or further help.
THE WORK SPACE Is one provided at home? Does it have a comfy chair? Is there good lighting? Has it got its supplies? Is there a clock? No distractions! No snacking and use it only for study. Don t go overboard
Revision Timetable What does my week look like?
Remember it is never too late! The Mocks are just around the corner so if you haven t, START!
School WE ARE ALL PART OF A TEAM
Miss Emson Deputy Head of School
Best advice for Parents: Be aware of the extra lessons available after school and if your son or daughter is attending them. Have conversations about the revision they are doing and let them show you their revision notes and plans. Keep an eye on the calendar and what is happening with them. (course work deadlines exam dates etc.) Be aware of extra sessions some staff run in the holidays from February onwards. (look out for letters about this) Use the school website to get information (like this presentation.)
Best advice for Parents: Be around as a 'feeding station' feed your child lots of healthy food and proper meals - not too many sugary snacks and junk food. Water! Water! Water! Reassure them you are concerned about their welfare not just the results. If your son or daughter has a medical condition, for example diabetes or hayfever, make sure that the school knows about it. If there is a family crisis, for example, divorce or bereavement, again ensure that we know about it
