2 Your Independent Learning Project Style Homework: This booklet contains all your Independent Learning Projects for Year 7. It should give you a clear idea of what has been set and when it should be completed and handed in. The tasks will be varied with an emphasis on extended study and independent research. Managing your time Each Foundation subject has set a project that should take between four to five hours to complete over a three/four week period. We want you to become self-managers. A good self-manager can organise their time, prioritise tasks and work to deadlines (all essential life skills). To help with this we ve staggered the tasks so that you only have to hand in a maximum of two projects at any one time. The timetable on the following page shows exactly when each Independent Learning task is to be undertaken. You will continue to receive homework weekly for English, Maths, and Science (please see weekly homework section later in this booklet) and periodically weekly homework from other subjects. All homework should be recorded in the Student Planner. Self-managers: Don t try to do each task all in one go; break it into chunks over three or four weeks.

4 Your Independent Learning tasks Each Independent Learning task has detailed instructions on: What you are expected to do How to complete the task Where to find help How to challenge yourself further to achieve the highest levels Reflective Learners: I can look back over my work and identify how to improve it for myself.

5 EGGAR S MARKING CRITERIA FOR PROJECT STYLE HOMEWORK Grade Awarded What this means A An outstanding piece of project style homework, showing that you fulfilled or exceeded the time expected to complete it and gave it your best efforts. B A good, sound piece of project style homework, showing that you fulfilled the time expected to complete it and worked hard. C A satisfactory piece of project style homework, showing that you completed the work, with some effort. D A disappointing piece of work, which looks as though not enough time was spent on it and/or that you didn t work hard enough on it. Literacy and Numeracy All teachers expect your work to be well presented. Spellings (including subject specific words) and punctuation will be accurate. Where appropriate graphs, dates, timelines etc will be neat, accurate and well labelled. These grades will be reported along with the normal termly progress review grades. As the project style homework is staggered, not all subjects will be able to report a project style homework grade with every report.

6 WEEKLY HOMEWORK Below is information on the work you will be set on a weekly basis in English, Maths and Science. English: In English, homework will be set each week and may take a variety of forms: research, reading, learning spellings, revision or written work. In addition to homework, students may be asked to prepare information or questions required for the next topic. Maths: Homework will take various forms. The most common will be mixed question worksheets requiring written answers with full workings shown, and computer set tasks using the MathsWatch website. In addition homework may be set on a specific topic requiring written solutions, mathematical investigations, functional skills tasks or on revision in the periods leading up to assessments. Science: Students in Years 7 and 8 are set one homework per week of approximately 45 minutes. The class teacher will review this homework with the students on the day it is due in. Please note: Periodically weekly homework will be set from other subjects.

7 Philosophy and Personal Development Joining Eggar s produced something to commemorate (remember) your start at Eggar s. This can take any form you choose, for example you could produce a poem, a poster, a photo diary, decorate a plate or even write a rap song; completed a mind-map of all the ways that special events are commemorated. By the end of the project you will know: how and why special events are commemorated. How to complete this project Research ways of commemorating other special events. This may give you ideas which you can use yourself; You could produce a commemorative item for your start at Eggar s as a whole, or you could choose a special event to commemorate instead. Research tips have produced a high quality piece of work to commemorate your start at Eggar s, which is well presented, thoughtful and will be a special keepsake for you; ensure that you check your spelling, punctuation and grammar. Look for other events that have been commemorated and how. Look on-line, in gift shops or book shops for different ideas.

8 Design & Technology Product Analysis 4 pages of product analysis; annotated all pages in colour and presented to the best of your ability By the end of the project you will know: what product analysis is; how to analyse products in order to make good choices How to complete this project Read the instruction sheets carefully. Look at the example thumbnail sheets in the instructions to get an idea of layout. Decide what product you will analyse. analyse your product in detail; present your findings in a neat, clear and concise way. Research tips Choose a product that you are interested in. Choose a product that will enable you to analyse many different types.

9 Art & Design Landscapes and Composition selected two landscapes by different artists; produced a literacy assessment piece (500 words minimum); analysed, described and compared the landscape; expressed your own opinions, using subject specific vocabulary. By the end of the project you will know: How to complete this project Research tips information about your chosen artists and how they made the artworks; how the artists have planned their work through analysing the composition; how to compare artworks through writing about them. Use art vocabulary to describe the way in which the artists have composed their work. Select artwork that you like and are interested in. Print out a colour image of each artwork to include with your written work. Present the work beautifully and ensure that your name is on each sheet. use the concepts that you have learned in school to analyse the artworks; use the resources on the department s One Drive to guide you; proof read your work carefully ensuring that the spelling and grammar is correct. Do not rely on the internet too heavily. No direct copying should be used. Avoid too much artist information, focus on comparisons.

10 Music Japanese Music and Culture created a project on Japanese Taiko Drumming. By the end of the project you will know: which instruments are commonly used in Taiko; how Taiko plays an important role in Japanese culture; the main musical features of Taiko. How to complete this project: Carry out research on Taiko drumming. Find an audio recording of a piece of music. Present your work in an exciting way (a PowerPoint, presentation, video etc). Research tips: need to use accurate musical vocabulary; put all of the information into your own words; check your spelling, punctuation and grammar carefully; be creative in the way you present your work. Search on the Web. Information sheets from your teacher.

11 Geography Our Place By the end of the project you will know: How to complete this project Research tips investigated your local area and completed fieldwork; considered how different groups of people feel about their local area. how land is used around Eggar s School; how Alton and the surrounding area has changed over time; how to use map skills and fieldwork to explain the local area and make suggestions; how people s emotions are influenced by places around them. You will need to conduct your own fieldwork around Alton to investigate and record the sights, sounds and feelings of the place. You will consider the distinctive features of Alton and give reasons for your choices. You will produce a local area map showing your favourite areas and mapping how land is used for different functions. You will be expected to write about the local area in detail, and understand ideas such as land use and land use change. You may choose from either the Gold, Silver or Bronze challenge. include maps, images, show an understanding of others views and feelings (empathy) and use correct geographical terminology. You will consider data. Use the internet and Learning Resource Centre to find out about Alton, in particular the key human and physical geographical features. Also take care to consider different social groups and their views. Be safe during fieldwork go in groups or with an adult if possible.

12 History British Monarchy Top Trumps produced at least 10 different Top Trump cards on 10 different Kings or Queens throughout British History. By the end of the project you will know: the key features of 10 different monarchs what did they do that made them popular/unpopular? How powerful were they? When did they rule?; how to complete wider research and use it effectively to help you summarise your main views. How to complete this project Produce 10 Top Trump cards on 10 British Monarchs of your choice. You need to consider three or four different areas for each monarch. How powerful were they? How successful were they? Did they get the country involved in lots of wars etc? You will need to complete wider research to help you do this. They should also include clear pictures of each monarch. ensure that wider research is completed and that the score for each element is justified; remember to pay careful attention to your spelling, punctuation and grammar. Research tips Use reputable websites such as BBC History and Spartacus education. There is a template and a selection on key terms on Show My Homework to use if you wish. See the classroom display in H2 which gives you examples of past Top Trump Cards.

13 Computing and ICT Themed Restaurant - Dining Menu & CD Cover created a dining menu (A4 or A5 in size) for a themed restaurant; created a CD cover for the themed restaurant music. By the end of the project you will know: How to complete this project: Research tips: how to choose and use effective graphics and text to suit a theme, audience and for differing purposes; how to create an effective layout and how to apply formatting to great effect. Read through the task sheet and, if required, seek help from your teacher if you do not understand what to do. Carry out the work and hand it in for marking. Literacy spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPAG) is important, so check your work carefully. Numeracy include prices for the menu and have a total play time for the CD tracks of no less than 40 minutes and no longer than 60 minutes. Spiritual, moral, social, cultural (SMSC) show your sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about your chosen theme. Carry out effective research that includes how the theme may have influenced yours and others cultures and their heritage around the world, and use this in your designs. Be imaginative and creative in your work. need to create effective products which are well thought through, are fit for purpose and could be used in a real world restaurant. need to follow the guidance given on the task sheet. need to apply your skills and knowledge gained from your ICT, Art, Design & Technology (and other subject) lessons. Carry out some online research and/or visit a real world restaurant to see what existing themed restaurants do. Carry out some research into music tracks which match a theme.

14 Drama Script Writing Project By the end of the project you will know: created, in pairs, a script from a picture stimulus for an important moment in your play e.g. the opening, the ending or a climactic moment; performed your script to the class with your partner on your deadline; completed the Numeracy Emotion Graph task. how to generate storyline and character ideas from pictures; clearly know how to layout and write a script; how to identify and plot the emotions of your character on a graph. How to complete this project: A worksheet will be available on Show My Homework, the project will be introduced clearly in a lesson. Create a correctly laid out script using the guidelines. Rehearse and perform your script with your partner ready for the deadline. Use class work studied to help generate and develop ideas. Use your numeracy skills to draw a graph and plot information correctly. need to use accurate dramatic vocabulary and present your work in a clear way. Research tips: Search on the Web for character ideas. Create spider diagrams to help generate ideas for your script and storyline. Information sheets from your teacher.
