1 SECTION OPERABLE PANEL PARTITIONS PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. This Section includes the following: 1. Manually operated, center stacking, top supported operable wall with panels continuously hinged or hinged in pairs. B. Related Sections include the following: 1. Division 5 Section , "Structural Steel", for top track support structure. 1.3 DEFINITIONS A. NIC: Noise isolation class. B. NVLAP: National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program. C. STC: Sound transmission class. 1.4 SYSTEM PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS A. Acoustical Performance: Provide operable panel partitions tested by a qualified testing agency for the following acoustical properties according to test methods indicated: 1. Sound Transmission Requirements: Operable panel partition assembly tested in a full-scale opening, 14 by 9 feet, for laboratory sound transmission loss performance according to ASTM E 90, determined by ASTM E 413, and rated for not less than the STC indicated. OPERABLE PANEL PARTITIONS
2 1.5 SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: Material descriptions, construction details, finishes, installation details, and operating instructions for each type of operable panel partition, component, and accessory specified. Include data on acoustical performance, surface-burning characteristics, and durability. B. Shop Drawings: Show location and extent of operable panel partitions. Include plans, elevations, sections, details, attachments to other construction, and accessories. Indicate dimensions; weights; conditions at openings and for storage; and required installation, storage, and operating clearances. Indicate location and installation requirements for hardware and track, and direction of travel. Show blocking to be provided by others. Include the following: 1. Calculations: Calculate requirements for supporting operable panel partitions and verify capacity of carriers and track components to support loads; indicate deflection limits for partition and adjacent construction. C. Setting Drawings: For embedded items and cutouts required in other work, including support beam punching template. D. Samples for Initial Selection: Manufacturer's color charts showing the full range of colors available for units with factory-applied color finishes. 1. Include similar Samples of accessories involving color selection. E. Product Certificates: Signed by manufacturers of operable panel partitions certifying that products furnished comply with requirements. F. Product Test Reports: From a qualified testing agency indicating that each operable panel partition complies with requirements. Submit the following; 1. Report indicating proposed assembly s STC. 2. Load test of track/trolley/bracket/hanger rod assembly. 3. Other load tests that may be required. G. Maintenance Data: For the following to include in maintenance manuals specified in Division 1: 1. Panel face finishes and finishes for exposed trim and accessories. Include precautions for cleaning materials and methods that could be detrimental to finishes and performance. 2. Seals, hardware, track, carriers, and other operating components. OPERABLE PANEL PARTITIONS
3 1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Installer Qualifications: An experienced installer who is certified in writing by the operable panel partition manufacturer as qualified to install the manufacturer's partition systems for work similar in material, design, and extent to that indicated for this Project. B. Testing Agency Qualifications: An independent testing laboratory, or an NVLAP-accredited laboratory, with the experience and capability to conduct the testing indicated, as documented according to ASTM E 548. NVLAP-accredited laboratories must document accreditation, based on a "Certificate of Accreditation" and a "Scope of Accreditation" listing the test methods specified. C. Fire-Test-Response Characteristics: Provide operable panel partitions with the following fire-test-response characteristics, as determined by testing identical products per test method indicated below by UL or another testing and inspecting agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. Identify materials with appropriate markings of applicable testing and inspecting agency. 1. Surface-Burning Characteristics: As follows, per ASTM E 84: a. Flame Spread: 25 or less. b. Smoke Developed: 450 or less. 1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Protectively package and sequence panels in order for installation. Clearly mark packages and panels with numbering system used on Shop Drawings. Do not use permanent markings on panels. B. Handle and store delivered materials on site in compliance with manufacturer s written instructions. 1.8 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Field Measurements: Verify operable panel partition openings and storage arrangements by field measurements before fabrication and indicate measurements on Shop Drawings. Coordinate fabrication schedule with construction progress to avoid delaying the Work. OPERABLE PANEL PARTITIONS
4 1.9 PRODUCT WARRANTY A. Track: 1. Panel-Face Provide 1 year all inclusive warranty covering defects in material and workmanship. 2. Warranted components shall include track, trolleys and (as appropriate) track curves, intersections, switches and control devices exclusive of wiring. B. Panels: 1. Provide 1 year all inclusive warranty covering defects in material and workmanship. 2. Warranty shall cover structural members, panel faces, panel trim, hardware and operating components. C. Limited Panel Warranty (10 years): Provide 10-year limited warranty for welded steel panels. Warranty shall cover faces, frame, internal reinforcing and trolley attachment plate. Should warranted items fail or their serviceable utility reduced due to defects in workmanship or materials, the manufacturer shall repair or provide replacement parts FOB jobsite, not including unloading or installation. Warranty shall not exclude normal wear and tear. D. Warranties shall commence upon date of substantial completion. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A. Basis-of-Design Product: The design for aluminum-framed systems is based on Advanced Equipment Corporation, Operable Acoustical Wall Panel System with welded steel framed and face walls "Sigma Series A Panels", 3 ½ inch thick, with STC 49/NIC 40 minimum with manufacturer s standard vinyl wall covering and including aluminum hanger track "#1" type track for manual operation. Subject to compliance with requirements, provide the named product or comparable products approved in writing by the Architect selected from the following: 1. Hufcor Inc. 2. Modernfold, Inc. 3. Panelfold, Inc. OPERABLE PANEL PARTITIONS
5 2.2 MATERIALS A. Steel Frame: Steel framing, not less than inch/16 gauge nominal specified thickness for uncoated steel. B. Steel Face/Liner Sheets: Tension-leveled steel sheet, not less than inch/20 gauge nominal specified thickness for uncoated steel. 2.3 OPERABLE PANEL PARTITIONS A. Panel Construction: Provide top reinforcement as required to support panel from suspension components and provide reinforcement for hardware attachment. Fabricate panels with tight hairline joints and concealed fasteners. Fabricate panels so finished in-place partition is rigid; level; plumb; aligned, with tight joints and uniform appearance; and free of bow, warp, twist, deformation, and surface and finish irregularities. B. Dimensions: Fabricate operable panel partitions, as required, to form an assembled system of dimensions indicated on Drawings and verified by field measurements. C. Cap-Trimmed Edges: Protective aluminum perimeter-edge trim with tight hairline joints concealing edges of panel and finish facing. D. Hardware: Manufacturer's standard as required to operate operable panel partition and accessories; with decorative, protective finish. 2.4 SEALS A. General: Provide types of acoustical seals indicated that produce operable panel partitions complying with acoustical performance requirements and the following: 1. Seals made from materials and profiles that minimize sound leakage. 2. Seals fitting tight at contact surfaces and sealing continuously between adjacent panels and between operable panel partition perimeter and adjacent surfaces, when operable panel partition is extended, closed, and in place. B. Vertical Seals: Deep-nesting, interlocking astragals mounted on each edge of panel, with continuous PVC acoustical seal. C. Top Seals: Fixed, flexible multi-fin seal exerting uniform constant pressure on track when extended. D. Horizontal Bottom Seals: Mechanical, retractable, automatic bottom seals exerting uniform constant pressure on floor when extended, ensuring horizontal and vertical OPERABLE PANEL PARTITIONS
6 sealing and resisting panel movement. Bottom seal shall be a cartridge, removable without cutting panel face. 1. Automatically Operated: Extension and retraction of bottom seal automatically operated by movement of partition, with operating range not less than the 1-inch operating clearance between retracted seal and floor finish. 2.5 FINISH FACING A. General: Provide finish facings that comply with indicated fire-test-response characteristics and that are factory applied to operable panel partitions with appropriate backing, using mildew-resistant nonstaining adhesive as recommended by facing manufacturer's written instructions. 1. Apply one-piece, seamless facings free from air bubbles, wrinkles, blisters, and other defects, with no gaps or overlaps. Tightly secure and conceal raw and selvage edges of facing for finished appearance. B. Vinyl-Coated Fabric Wall Covering: Manufacturer's standard mildew-resistant, washable, vinyl-coated fabric wall covering; complying with CFFA-W-101-B for Type indicated; Class A; weight not less than 18 ounces per lineal yard. 1. Color and Pattern: To be selected by Architect from manufacturer s standard colors and patterns during submittal review. 2.6 SUSPENSION SYSTEMS A. Suspension Tracks: Aluminum with adjustable steel hanger rods for overhead support, designed for type of operation, size, and weight of operable panel partition indicated. Size track to support partition operation and storage without damage to suspension system, operable panel partitions, or adjacent construction. Limit track deflection to no more than 0.10 inch between bracket supports. Provide a continuous system of track sections and accessories to accommodate configuration and layout indicated for partition operation and storage. 1. Panel Guide: Aluminum; finished with clear satin anodized finish. B. Carriers: Trolley system as required for configuration type, size, and weight of partition and for easy operation; with ball-bearing wheels. OPERABLE PANEL PARTITIONS
7 C. Track Intersections, Switches, and Accessories: As required for type of operation, storage, track configuration, and layout indicated for operable panel partition, and compatible with partition assembly specified. Fabricate track intersections and switches from aluminum. 2.7 ACCESSORIES A. Pass Doors: Swinging door built into and matching panel materials, construction, acoustical qualities, finish and thickness, complete with frames and operating hardware. Hinges finished to match other exposed hardware. 1. Accessibility Standard: Fabricate doors to comply with applicable provisions in Florida Building Code and the U.S. Architectural & Transportation Barriers Compliance Board's ADA-ABA Accessibility Guidelines for Buildings and Facilities. 2. Single Pass Door: 36 by 84 inches. 3. Pass-Door Hardware: Equip pass doors with the following: a. Door Seals: Sweep floor seals. b. Concealed door closer. c. Door Viewer: Installed with view in direction of swing. d. Exit Sign: Recessed, self-illuminated. e. Latchset: Passage set. B. Storage Doors: None. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Examine flooring, structural support, and opening, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance of operable panel partitions. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. OPERABLE PANEL PARTITIONS
8 3.2 INSTALLATION A. General: Comply with ASTM E 557, operable panel partition manufacturer's written installation instructions, Drawings, and approved Shop Drawings. B. Install operable panel partitions and accessories after other finishing operations, including painting, have been completed. C. Install panels in sequence as indicated on manufacturer s shop drawings. D. Broken, cracked, chipped, deformed, or unmatched panels are not acceptable. 3.3 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Optional Testing: Owner reserves the right to field sound test installed acoustical panel partitions within 60 days of substantial completion. Owner shall engage a qualified, professional, acoustical engineer to perform field tests and to prepare test reports. Cost of field tests shall be borne by the Owner. B. Repair or replace operable panel partitions within areas where test results indicate partitions do not comply with requirements, and retest partitions. 3.4 ADJUSTING A. Adjust operable panel partitions to operate smoothly, easily, and quietly, free from binding, warp, excessive deflection, distortion, nonalignment, misplacement, disruption, or malfunction, throughout entire operational range. Lubricate hardware and other moving parts. B. Adjust pass doors to operate smoothly and easily, without binding or warping. 3.5 CLEANING AND PROTECTION A. Clean soiled surfaces, vinyl wall covering, metal surfaces, on completing installation of operable panel partitions, to remove dust, loose fibers, fingerprints, adhesives, and other foreign materials according to manufacturer's written instructions. B. Provide final protection and maintain conditions, in a manner acceptable to manufacturer and Installer, that ensure operable panel partitions are without damage or deterioration at time of Substantial Completion. C. Replace panels that cannot be cleaned and repaired, in a manner approved by Architect, before time of Substantial Completion. OPERABLE PANEL PARTITIONS
9 3.6 DEMONSTRATION A. Engage a factory-authorized service representative to train Owner's maintenance personnel to adjust, operate, and maintain operable panel partitions. 1. Test and adjust seals, hardware, carriers, tracks, storage swing doors, and other operable components. Replace damaged or malfunctioning operable components. 2. Train Owner's maintenance personnel on procedures and schedules for starting and stopping, troubleshooting, servicing, and maintaining equipment and schedules. 3. Review data in maintenance manuals. Refer to Division 1 Section "Contract Closeout." 4. Schedule training with Owner with at least seven days' advance notice. END OF SECTION OPERABLE PANEL PARTITIONS
