1 SALEM COMMUNITY COLLEGE COURSE SYLLABUS PRINCIPLES AND SCIENCE OF COACHING Course Code: HPE 141 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Credits: 3 Course Description: This course is designed to provide the student with a fundamental understanding of the sport science and management skills necessary in becoming a successful coach. Students will compare and contrast a variety of objectives used to define success and then examine and redefine their individual philosophies. Topics will include motivation goal setting, organization, learning/teaching styles, team management and the coach s responsibility to incorporate life lessons while teaching sport skills. Pre-Requisite: Co-Requisite: None None Place in College Curriculum: This course is required in the Sports Management Program at Salem Community College. It may also be used as a three credit open elective.

3 HPE 141 / Page 3 Course Performance Objective #1 The student will examine and discuss a variety of coaching philosophies. 1. The student will identify the three major objectives considered when developing a coaching philosophy. 2. The student will assess and prioritize objectives in relation to a variety of coaching situations. 3. The student will compare and contrast the three fundamental coaching styles and explain the positive and negative aspects of each one. 4. The student will identify the important components of being a successful coach. 5. The student will examine their personal reasons for coaching and the style of coaching that best fits their personality. 6. The student will identify their strengths and weaknesses in coaching and explain how to best utilize or overcome these traits. Course Performance Objective #2 The student will develop an understanding of effective communication skills. 1. The student will describe the three dimensions of communication. 2. The student will demonstrate understanding of why communication is sometimes ineffective. 3. The student will compare and contrast communication styles of a variety of coaching personalities. 4. The student will describe necessary aspects of developing credibility when communicating. 5. The student will explain the importance of improved nonverbal communication. Course Performance Objective #3 The student will develop an understanding of how to successfully motivate teams and individual players. 1. The student will define intrinsic and extrinsic rewards and explain how both are useful tools in motivation. 2. The student will differentiate between the thought processes of winners versus losers. 3. The student will describe the positive and negative effects of goal setting. 4. The student will demonstrate knowledge of the relationship between arousal and performance. 5. The student will define success as it relates to motivating athletes.

4 HPE 141 / Page 4 Course Performance Objective #4 The student will develop an understanding of the importance of planning and organization in becoming a successful coach. 1. The student will describe how to evaluate the situation so that an appropriate season plan can be developed. 2. The student will define season plan and practice plan and explain the importance of both. 3. The student will explain the fundamental components of a season plan and a practice plan. 4. The student will demonstrate the ability to create appropriate season plans for a variety of team circumstances. 5. The student will demonstrate the ability to create appropriate practice plans for a variety of team circumstances during different points of the season. Course Performance Objective #5 The student will examine the important components of teaching sport skills. 1. The student will identify and explain the four steps of teaching sport skills. 2. The student will explain the benefits of teaching skills and techniques in the whole and whole-part-whole methods and differentiate when each is appropriate. 3. The student will describe seven practice principles and why each is important to success. 4. The student will describe techniques in evaluating performance and providing constructive feedback to athletes. 5. The student will identify points of emphasis in evaluating the effectiveness of the coach (or themselves as the coach) in teaching skills. Course Performance Objective #6 The student will develop an understanding of the affects of exercise, fitness training and nutrition on athletic performance. 1. The student will demonstrate familiarity with the 10 principles of training. 2. The student will identify popular fallacies, misconceptions and myths of training. 3. The student will demonstrate an understanding of developing appropriate training goals suitable for the season and the individual characteristics of the athlete. 4. The student will describe signs of over-training that can lead to injury and illness. 5. The student will explain the importance of proper nutrition and hydration in maximizing performance.

5 HPE 141 / Page 5 Course Performance Objective #7 The student will discuss the importance of balancing team management, and coaching responsibilities. 1. The student will explain how preseason planning and organization will help to alleviate conflicts between meeting team management and coaching responsibilities during the season. 2. The students will describe the benefits of identifying and training assistant coaches and support staff so that certain duties and responsibilities can be delegated. 3. The student will develop a discipline plan outlining team rules, expectations and consequences. 4. The student will develop an outline for preseason team and parent meetings to complete administrative requirements and to disseminate important season information. 5. The student will develop a checklist of administrative, supervisory and coaching responsibilities. Course Performance Objective #8 The student will discuss how to manage a budget and incorporate essential fund raising programs. 1. The student will demonstrate how to effectively utilize available funding prioritizing necessities over extras. 2. The student will develop fund raising ideas suitable for a variety of group sizes and financial goals. 3. The student will explain the difference between appropriate and inappropriate fund raising ideas as they relate to representation of the team or program. 4. The student will explain how goods and services can be obtained for little or no cost. General Education Requirements: This course covers the following general education requirements: 1. communication 2. critical thinking and problem solving 3. ethical dimension 4. science and technology 5. society and human behavior Course Activities: This course will incorporate lecture along with individual and small group assignments. Activities will be designed to strengthen the student s critical thinking and problem solving skills. Additional assignments may include, but are not limited to, student presentations, journaling activities, writing assignments and research activities.

6 HPE 141 / Page 6 Course Requirements and Means of Evaluation: This information will be determined by the individual instructor for each class and will be distributed at the beginning of the semester. Final grades will be determined using the following scale: Letter grade Numerical Value Grade Points A A B B B C C C D D F 59 and below 0 FA* 59 and below 0 *The FA grade is given for failing the course and missing 30 percent or more of the course. Attendance: Students are expected to attend all classes.
