1 BLG/1 BUSINESS LICENCE INSPECTION GUIDE December 2009 INSPECTION POINTS/REQUIREMENTS CODE REFERENCE ADDRESS SIGNAGE Visible from the street. By-Law 67M86 FIRE DEPARTMENT ACCESS 6 m wide roadway for fire apparatus setup is maintained. AFC Primary access to principal entrance is maintained. EMERGENCY ACCESS ROUTE 6 m wide roadway for fire apparatus setup is maintained. AFC Available to emergency vehicles only. Maintained at all times. No parking signs installed. CFD Access Standard Vehicle barriers installed. SECONDARY ACCESS STREET Maintained at all times. AFC LOCKBOX Installation requirements: AFC Fire protection equipment requiring key access. Key-operated elevator controls. Locked access to a roof. Contains correct keys and they are tagged. PRIVATE HYDRANT Orientation to main access route. Hydrant placement sheet Flow test results. AFC 6.4/NFPA 25 Unobstructed. See Hydrant sheet. FIRE DEPT. CONNECTION 2 m operational clearance. AFC 6.4 Protective caps in place.

2 BLG/2 FIRE ALARM Requirements: A day care facility, with an occupant load >40. Residential occupancy with sleeping accommodation for more than 10 persons. A children s residential care facility with an occupant load more than 10. ABC Design/configuration of alarm system meets the requirements of the use of the building, i.e.,hazards. Annual maintenance certificate and inspection report is required, even if the AFC system is a shared system. FIRE ALARM PANEL Located at primary entrance and operational. ABC /ABC If not at primary entrance, is strobe present. Alarm zone map on wall by panel. LOCAL ALARM 911 signs above manual pull stations. AFC Signs must be permanently installed. MANUAL PULL STATIONS Near principal entrance to the building. ABC Near every exit. Unobstructed. SPRINKLER SYSTEM Annual maintenance certificate and inspection report is required, even if the AFC 6.4/AFC system is a shared system. Ceiling tiles installed. 9 heads can use domestic water supply but need proof that domestic water can meet required flow. System meets configuration/hazard requirements of business. Sprinkler control room is signed - Sprinkler Control Room. Supply of sprinkler heads, 6 of each type used. Sprinkler wrench present. FIRE PUMP Maintenance schedule test results (weekly/annually). AFC 6.4/NFPA 25 Placarding for fuel on door. GENERATOR Maintenance schedule test results (weekly/annually). AFC Fuel supply maintenance. STANDATA Variance AFC Placarding for fuel. ELEVATORS Ensure applicable features work. AFC

3 BLG/3 EMERGENCY LIGHTING Requirements: ABC In exits. In principal routes providing access to exits. In service rooms. In corridors. Aimed in direction of travel. Work when power is off. AFC Inspected, tested and maintained (monthly/annually). AFC / EXIT DOORS Open in the direction of travel. ABC Correct travel distance to at least one exit: ABC m in a high hazard industrial occupancy. 40 m in a business and personal services occupancy. 45 m in a floor area for occupancies other than a high hazard industrial occupancy - sprinklered. 60 m in any storage garage. 30 m in any other floor area. 60 m apart along the perimeter aligned with main access aisles leading directly to the exit. Door release hardware requirements: One releasing mechanism. No keys, special devices or specialized knowledge. When latch is released, door will open with <90 N of force applied at the knob or other releasing device. Panic hardware requirements: Assembly occupancy with occupancy >100. Doors leading to an exit lobby from a exit stairway. Exterior door from an exit stairway in a building with an occupancy >100. Exit doors from a high hazard industrial occupancy. ABC ABC Exit doors should be checked to ensure they are operable. AFC Exits must be maintained and be free of obstructions. AFC EXIT SIGNS Requirements: over or adjacent to every exit. ABC A building more than 2 storeys in building height. A building with an occupant load > 150. A room or floor area that has a fire escape. Must be visible from the exit approach. If necessary, exit signs with directional arrows shall be installed. Illuminated while the building is occupied. AFC

4 BLG/4 FIRE DOORS Door (closures) rating as per Table ABC Require a self-closing device that is operational. AFC Hold open devices must release on alarm. AFC Must positively latch when closed. AFC Not obstructed, blocked, wedged open or altered. AFC Fire doors must be kept closed. Fire doors that are damaged must be repaired or replaced. FIRE SEPARATIONS Damage of fire separations must be repaired. (e.g., walls, etc.) AFC Fire Extinguishers At least one 2A:10BC or larger fire extinguisher. NFPA 10 Listed, labelled and tagged by a fire extinguisher company. AFC / Travel distance between extinguishers 25 m. NFPA 10 Located near exits or corridors/aisles providing access to exits. Mounting requirements: NFPA 10 >40lbs., maximum 3.5 feet high. <40lbs., Maximum 5 feet high. No less than 4 inches off the ground. Inspected, tested and maintained annually. AFC.6.2/NFPA 10 Visible and accessible with an access aisle of 1 m. Signed if required. Standpipe System Check to ensure hose is connected. AFC 6.4 Hydrostatic tested every 5 years. All parts of the building are within 9 m of a hose nozzle when attached to not more than 30 m of hose. Floor Numbering Requirements: ABC Arabic numerals indicating assigned floor. Permantly mounted on stair side of wall at the latch side of doors to exit stairs. Not less than 60 mm high, raised 0.7 mm above surface. Located 1350 mm from the finished floor. Beginning not more than 150 mm from the door. Contrasting in colour with the surface they are applied to. ABOVE GROUND STORAGE Tanks Submitted drawings. See Above Ground Storage Sank Inspection Guide. BUILDING STORAGE Tanks Submitted drawings. See Building Storage Tank Inspection Guide.

5 BLG/5 Racked Storage Racked storage above 12 feet requires a racking permit from The City of Calgary. Must maintain main access aisles for individual storage areas sq m. AFC & Table m access aisles for fire protection equipment. AFC Main access aisles must be accessible from 2 fire department access points. AFC Minimum widths to be maintained 2.4 m or 3.6 m AFC Sprinkler system must be adequate for racking. Fire alarm system must be uncompromised by racking. Special Suppression Systems Maintenance inspection and report every 6 months. (Sapphire, kitchen, AFC spray booth etc.) Commercial Cooking See Commercial Cooking Inspection Guide. AFC /NFPA 96 Dust Collection Systems See Dust Producing Inspection Guide. AFC 5.3. Spray Booth/Room/Area See Spray Booth Inspection Guide. AFC /NFPA 33 Compressed Gas Cylinders Protected against mechanical and valve damage. AFC Be firmly secured in an upright position that will not interfere with the operation of the valve. No storage in exit or access to exit, under any fire escape, outside exit stairs, passage, ramp or within 1 m of an exit. Flammable/combustible LIQUIDS Proper storage/approved containers, cabinets. AFC 4.2. Placarding. Propane Cylinders See Propane Storage Inspection Guide. AFC Electrical Electrical wiring must be in good repair. AFC Extension cords not to be used as substitutes for permanent wiring. Electrical outlets and switches must have cover plates. 1 m clearance around electrical panels. AFC Housekeeping Combustible materials in and around buildings must be removed daily. AFC Rooms containing building services, e.g.,furnace, boilers, electrical equipment, etc. must not be used for storage. Material subject to spontaneous ignition, such as oily rags, must be deposited in a listed and labelled container. All suspended ceiling panels must be in place. AFC AFC

6 General Storage Access aisles of 1 m to Fire Department access panels and fire protection equipment must be provided. 1 m clearance between the storage of products and the underside of the floor or roof deck in non-sprinklered buildings. 18-inch clearance between the top of storage and ceiling sprinkler deflectors in sprinklered buildings. Fire Safety Plan Required: Assembly, care or detention occupancies. Building with fire alarm systems. Demolition and construction sites. Storage areas. Areas where flammable and combustible liquids are stored and handled. Areas where hazardous processes or operations occur. AFC AFC AFC /NFPA 13 AFC BLG/6 Supervisory staff shall be trained in the fire emergency procedures. AFC At least one copy of fire emergency procedures must be prominently posted on each floor area. AFC CFDBLG
