He studied at the RCM, Cambridge and Paris and numbers among his teachers Herbert Howells, Gordon Jacob and Olivier Messiaen. His performances and recordings range from pop and jazz to classical and contemporary and he performs regularly with Saxology and his own band The Reduced History of Jazz Jeffery is coordinator and professor of Composition at Junior Guildhall, supervisor on the music faculty at Cambridge University, Clarinet and Saxophone tutor at the Colchester Institute, visiting lecturer in Jazz and Improvisation at the Royal Military School of Music and consultant and senior examiner for Trinity Guildhall Exams. 3 Course syllabus Aims: 1. To gain an overview of the historical, contextual and musical elements of Jazz from the late 19 th century to the present day. 2. To enable exposure to the music via the live music experience. 3. To create an environment of relaxed and uninhibited learning. Content: With the pianist / trumpeter Peter Marshall and Sax / Clarinet / piano Jeffery Wilson. We shall investigate the music known as Jazz from Blues via early jazz through swing and bebop to the cool school and beyond. Presentation of the course: The methodology here will be via discussion, formal presentation, live music and participation, recorded sound, handouts and white board descriptors. Outcomes: As a result of the course, within the constraints of the time available, students should be able to: 1. Have an overview of the musical and historical elements of the music. 2. Be able to engage with the various trends and developmental aspects of the music. 3. Form a foundation of understanding that will inform future learning. 4. Develop a personal approach to Jazz listening, reading and/or participation.
